Abstract

Patents Act 1980 INNOVATION PATENT DECORATIVE FURNITURE PAINT KNOWN AS SUGAR 1. Abstract Sugar Paint decorative furniture paint is a modular system to enable the decorator to choose and modify the paint shade of colour, i.e. light or dark shades, type of finish, i.e. smooth or textured and the durability of the finish, i.e. hard, weatherproof or delicate. It is a tint in a natural mineral powder carriers that not only tints off-the-self acrylic (water based) paint, but also transforms the tactile finish of the paint. The decorator can easily modify the shade of the colour and the nature of the finish which is not available with off-the-shelf products. The paint powder and its paste and liquid derivatives also dyes fabrics.

COMPLETE SPECIFICATION INNOVATION PATENT
DECORATIVE FURNITURE PAINT KNOWN AS SUGAR
PAINT 2016102021 21 Nov 2016 2 1. Title 1.1 Decorative Furniture Paint Known as Sugar Paint 2. Description 2.1 Overview 2.1.1 This application relates to a system of paint finish known as “Sugar Paint” for the decoration of furniture and furnishings. The style of furniture decoration is generally known in the community as “shabby chic” which is a genre of a style of painted decorative finish that has its origins in Europe and North America from the 1800’s. 2.1.2 The “core” of the Sugar Paint, paint decoration system enables the decorator to choose and modify the paint shade of colour from the one product, i.e. light or dark shades, type of finish, i.e. smooth, milky, pearlescent or textured and the durability of the finish, i.e. hard, weatherproof or delicate. 2.1.3 The paint tint and type of finish is supplied in a packaged powdered form, however may also be alternatively supplied in forms such as a paste or liquid. The powder comprises a mixture of tint in natural mineral carrier powders. When mixed with liquid base paint, it transforms to a unique finish not available from the base product alone. The texture powders are natural minerals such as calcium carbonate, calcite, kaolin clay, porcelain clay and magnesium carbonate that when applied in the correct quantity and form, change the texture and viscosity of the base paint to provide the finish effect sought by the decorator, i.e. silky, chalky, milky, pearlescent or textured. 2.1.4 The packaged powdered tint and/or textured finish (including in their alternative forms as a paste or liquid) is mixed with hot water and applied to acrylic (water based) white base liquid paint which is freely available from hardware stores and paint stores to form a unique decorative paint finish once mixed, to be marketed by the inventor under the brand known as “Sugar Paint”. 2.1.5 A further feature of the powdered paint tint (including in its alternative forms of a paste or liquid) is its ability to dye fabric to enable the decorator to match or contrast the paint tints applied to the furniture with the liquid paint. 2.1.6 This modular system enables the decorator to determine the best type and style of finish depending on the nature of the item being decorated with a single product. “Off-the-shelf” decorative paint products do not allow for this flexibility of colouring and finish from the one product. It also allows the decorator to make numerous colours 2016102021 21 Nov 2016 3 from a single container of base paint (depending on the nature of the furniture items being decorated and the size of the container of base paint). This makes it an extremely economical way to decorate furniture items using multiple colours and tactile finishes. The alternatives in the market require purchasing separate containers of paint in the desired colours and/or tactile finish. 2.2 The Process 2.2.1 The process of making “Sugar Paint” decorative furniture paint is as follows: a) Mix the pre-packaged powdered tint with a small amount of hot water in a small container to create a “syrup”, ensuring that all the powdered tint is completely dissolved. If the mixture is provided in an alternative form such as paste or liquid, this step may be omitted; b) Apply the liquid tint syrup to the prescribed amount of white base acrylic (water based) paint and mix until an even colour tint is achieved. The lightness or darkness of the tint can be modified by either adding more tint or more base paint until the desired shade of tint is achieved; c) The texture of the paint can then be modified by the application of an additional “texture additive”. The pre-packaged texture powders are also dissolved in a small amount of hot water (or full-cream milk for milk finishes) before being mixed with the tinted base liquid paint. If the texture additive is supplied in the form of a paste or liquid, the pre-mixing step may be omitted. Available textures include a “chalk” finish, a “silk” finish, a “milk” finish, pearlescent finish or a highly textured finish. d) The addition of the tint and finish powders to the acrylic base paint creates a chemical reaction within the paint that transforms the paint finish from the original base paint product to the decorative furniture paint. The nature of the changes includes its texture and viscosity. 2.2.2 The process of making a fabric dye from the powdered tint is as follows: a) Mix the powdered tint with a small amount of hot water in a small container to create a “syrup”, ensuring that all the powdered tint is dissolved. If the mixture is provided in an alternative form such as paste or liquid, this step may be omitted; b) Fill a larger container that will accommodate the item being dyed with hot water and mix the syrup into the water until it is completely dispersed. c) The item being dyed is them immersed in the liquid; 2016102021 21 Nov 2016 4 d) The item once completed soaked in the liquid is then removed, excess liquid wrung from the item and then hung to dry; e) The result is that the item is dyed to the colour of the tint.

Claims (4)

1. Claims 1 The application of Sugar Paint powders (or their alternative forms such as a paste or liquid) to standard off-the-shelf acrylic base paint enables it to be transformed through a chemical reaction into a highly flexible decorative furniture paint where the decorator can determine the colour tint and style of tactile finish and durability of finish which is not available from the base paint alone.
2 In addition to claim 1 above, the combination of tint in the carrier minerals provides a transformative effect to the base acrylic paint that is not available through normal commercial means from existing retail and commercial outlets.
3 In addition to claim 1 above, the modular approach used with Sugar Paint provides a highly cost effective and simple means of decorating furniture with paint for decorators and hobbyists with factors and attributes that is not available from products from existing commercial outlets and would otherwise require advanced knowledge of paint chemical composition and formulation using a variety of ingredients.
4 The ability to dye fabric with the tinted paint powders (including their alternative forms as a paste or liquid) is a unique innovation for furniture decorators from a furniture paint product that is not currently available in the market.
