Abstract
Feminine hygiene devices having a withdrawal string coated in wax. The feminine hygiene device can include a body having an insertion end, a withdrawal end, a longitudinal axis and a withdrawal string extending from the withdrawal end. The withdrawal string is twine coated in one or a combination of waxes. Figure 1
Description
TAMPON HAVING A WITHDRAWAL STRING COATED IN WAX FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The invention relates to tampons having an improved withdrawal string with the withdrawal string being coated in wax or a combination of waxes.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] Feminine hygiene devices such as an absorbent pledget, for example, embodied by a tampon, are generally used by women within the vagina for feminine needs, such as to absorb menstrual exudates.
[0003] Many of these devices include withdrawal strings.
These withdrawal strings are twine. Because the withdrawal string has a fixed end affixed to the pledget and a free end in opposition to the fixed end with a length there between the string may contact fluids such as menses or urine and become soiled, wet and uncomfortable.
[0004] It is desirable to provide an improved feminine hygiene device with a withdrawal string that is wax coated. Wax, being, esters of high molecular weight fatty acids with monohydric or dihydric alcohols.
[0005] Waxes are water repellent and may be produced by plants and animals to provide a protective, waterproof layer for exposed outer surfaces. The withdrawal string coated in wax will be water resistant and will substantially impede the transport of fluid and microorganisms suspended in that fluid along the free end of the string to the fixed end by creating a fluid barrier.
[0006] Such withdrawal strings coated in wax can demonstrate an improved tampon string having reduced or eliminated wicking and adhesion of fluid such as, for example menses.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION
[0007] Feminine hygiene devices having a withdrawal string coated in one or a combination of waxes creating a fluid barrier.
[0008] It is the objective of the invention to provide a withdrawal string having a free end and a fixed end attached to an absorbent pledget wherein the withdrawal string substantially impedes transport of microorganisms suspended in fluid and impedes transport of fluid in contact with the free withdrawal string by the string being coated in wax.
[0009] Waxes are water repellent and may be produced by plants and animals to provide a protective, waterproof layer for exposed outer surfaces. Wax is a simple lipid which is an ester of a long-chain alcohol and a fatty acid.
[0010] It is an object of the invention to provide a withdrawal string having a free end and a fixed end attached to an absorbent pledget wherein the withdrawal string retards the transport of fluids and fluid-borne particulates along the length of the free withdrawal string even when the string is immersed in fluid by the string being coated in wax. The period of retardation is sufficient to enable a user to enjoy immersion in water such as bathing, showering, swimming and also urinating without becoming soiled and wet.
[0011] The withdrawal string can be formed by any suitable string formation method and in any suitable configuration, such as, e.g. one or more cords, strings, finger covers, ribbons, an extension of a material of the device, or combination thereof. In certain embodiments, the withdrawal string can include any suitable number of plies of yarn, such as, for example, 1,3,3,4,5,6,7 or more plies of yarn. The string can be coated in one or more combinations of wax to reduce or eliminate wicking and adhesion of fluid to the string.
[0012] The withdrawal string can be joined to the tampon body either directly or indirectly and can extend freely beyond the withdrawal end of the tampon body. The withdrawal string can be attached to the tampon body in any suitable manner, such as, e.g. by stitching, adhesive or any other suitable manner.
[0013] The withdrawal string can be any suitable construction. For example, the withdrawal string can be a twisted or knitted construction containing multiple plies of yarn.
[0014] The tampon can be formed in any suitable manner. The absorbent material and/or overwrap can be rolled and/or folded, compressed and optionally heat conditioned in any suitable conventional manner to form the tampon.
[0015] The absorbent material can be any suitable shape, size, material, or construction prior to compression and/or shaping.
DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS
[0016] Figure 1 shows an embodiment of an absorbent tampon 4. The tampon 4 can include a body 3 having an insertion end 5 and a withdrawal end 2. The tampon 4 also includes a withdrawal string 1 joined to the body 3 at withdrawal end 2. As shown in Figure 1, the withdrawal string 1 can be directly joined to the body 3.
Claims (5)
1. A withdrawal string for a tampon, the withdrawal string comprising a plurality of elongate, substantially coextensive, intertwined fibers and having a fixed end attached to an absorbent pledget, a free end in opposition to said fixed end, and a length there between where the length between is coated in one or a combination of waxes to create a barrier impeding the absorption of fluid along the said length of the free end of the withdrawal string and the said fixed end of the withdrawal string.
2. The feminine hygiene device of claim 1, wherein the withdrawal string comprises two or more plies of yarn and/or one or more knitted plies of yarn is coated in one or a combination of waxes.
3. The feminine hygiene device of claims 1-2, wherein the withdrawal string is coated in plant wax.
4. The feminine hygiene device of claims 1-2, wherein the withdrawal string is coated in animal wax.
5. The feminine hygiene device of claims 1-4, wherein the withdrawal string demonstrates a decreased wicking of fluid along the withdrawal string compared to a withdrawal string not coated in wax.
