Abstract
A MIXING DEVICE Abstract A mixing device (10) to mix a flowable substance such as sand and cement. The device (10) includes a shaft (11) with a plurality of veins (18) facing in one angular direction, and veins (20) facing in the opposite angular direction.
Description
A MIXING DEVICE
Technical Field
The present invention relates to mixing devices and more particularly but not exclusively to mixing devices to be attached to and driven by an electrically operated hand tool.
Background of the Invention
In the building industry it is common for various substances to be mixed, such as cement and adhesives. Particularly in relation to cement, such as cement employed in tiling, the cement can be mixed on a floor surface or sheeted material resting on the floor surface. Alternatively, the cement may be mixed in a container such as a bucket.
The disadvantage of mixing the cement on a floor surface or sheet is that it can create a mess. The disadvantage of mixing cement in a bucket is that it is awkward.
Object of the Invention
It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate at least one of the above disadvantages.
Summary of the Invention
There is disclosed herein a mixing device including: a driVe shaft having a longitudinal axis at about which the shaft is to be rotated in a predetermined direction; a first set of veins fixed to the shaft so as to extend outwardly therefrom, each of the veins having a substance engaging surface, with the surfaces being inclined to said direction by an acute angle so that the surfaces face at least partly in said direction; a second set of veins, the second set of veins being spaced from the first set of veins, the second set of veins each having a surface to engage the substance to be mixed with the surfaces of the second set of veins being inclined so as to face in a direction opposite said predetermined direction.
Preferably, with said shaft oriented upward, the surfaces of the first veins at least partly face upward.
Preferably, with said shaft oriented upward, the surfaces of the second veins at least partly face downward.
Preferably, said shaft has an end extremity to be engaged by an electric power tool, with said second set of veins located closer to said end extremity than said first set of veins.
Preferably, said device includes an annular member, the annular member surrounding said shaft with the veins of said first set extending from said shaft to said annular member so as to be at least partly supported by said annular member.
Brief Description of the Drawings A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a schematic isometric view of a mixing device;
Figure 2 is a schematic side elevation of the device of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a schematic top plan view of the device of Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is a schematic bottom plan view of the device of Figure 1.
Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment
In the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted a mixing device 10. The device is intended to mix flowable substances, whether the substances are particles or liquids. As a particular example, the device 10 may be adapted to mix sand and cement.
The device 10 has a shaft 11 having a longitudinal axis 12 about which the shaft 10 is rotatably driven in the direction 13. Asa particular example, the shaft 11 may have secured to its extremity 14 a nut 15 so that the shaft 11 may be engaged by an electrically operated hand tool. The hand tool would be activated to drive the shaft 11 in the direction 13 about the axis 12.
The shaft 11 has a lower portion 16 to which there is fixed a first set of veins 17 and a second set of veins 18. The set 17 includes veins 19 while the set 18 includes veins 20.
Each of the veins 19 faces in the direction 13, with each set of veins 19 having a surface 21 to engage the material to be mixed. The surfaces 31 being inclined to said direction by an acute angle 20 so as to at least partly face in said direction and at least partly upward.
The veins 20 each face in the opposite direction to the direction 13, with each of the veins 20 having an under surface 22 to engage the material being mixed. Each of the surfaces 22 is inclined to said direction by an acute angle so as to partly face in said direction and to at least partly face downward.
To aid in supporting the veins 19, there is provided an annular support member 23 that is secured to the radial outer extremities of the veins 19.
Each of the veins 19 and 20 is fixed to the shaft 11 so as to be driven thereby in the direction 13.
The set 18 is spaced longitudinally from the set 17 so as to be positioned closer to the end extremity 14 than the set 17.
Preferably, the surfaces 21 and 20 are inclined by acute angles to the longitudinal axis 12.
In operation of the above described device 10, the surfaces 21 by being driven in the direction 13 engage the material to be mixed to mix the material. The surfaces 22 also engage the material but aid in restraining the material.
The above described preferred embodiment of the mixing device 10 is particularly adapted to mix sand and cement, render mortar and concrete in a container such as a bucket.
Claims (4)
1. A mixing device including: a drive shaft having a longitudinal axis at about which the shaft is to be rotated in a predetermined direction; a first set of veins fixed to the shaft so as to extend outwardly therefrom, each of the veins having a substance engaging surface, with the surfaces being inclined to said direction by an acute angle so that the surfaces face at least partly in said direction; a second set of veins, the second set of veins being spaced from the first set of veins, the second set of veins each having a surface to engage the substance to be mixed with the surfaces of the second set of veins being inclined so as to face in a direction opposite said predetermined direction, wherein said device includes an annular member, the annular member surrounding said shaft with the veins of said first set extending from said shaft to said annular member so as to be at least partly supported by said annular member.
2. The device of claim 1, wherein with said shaft oriented upward, the surfaces of the first veins at least partly face upward.
