Associated provisional applications:
The following statement is a full description of the invention, including the best method of performing it known to me: 2010201214 16 Oct 2015 2 “Water Filter”
Field of the Invention [001 ] The present invention relates to a water filter.
Background to the Invention [002] Water filtration by allowing water to pass downwardly through a filter under the force of gravity is known. Such filters commonly comprise a ceramic candle through which the water will pass. The present invention relates to such a ceramic candle filter of improved design.
Summary of the Invention [003] According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a water filter comprising: an outer shell of a porous ceramic material comprising a side wall and an end wall at a first end of the side wall; a cap provided to seal across an open second end of the side wall, the cap having an outlet; a dechlorination medium provided within an inner chamber defined between the outer shell and the cap; and a sterilisation layer provided on an inner surface of the outer shell; wherein water passes inwardly through the outer shell, into the inner chamber and then outwardly through the outlet.
[004] Preferably the dechlorination medium comprises activated charcoal.
[005] Preferably the sterilisation layer comprises a layer of colloidal silver applied to the inner surface of the outer wall and end wall of the outer shell. 3 2010201214 16 Oct 2015 [006] In a preferred embodiment, the cap comprises a circular body having a lip portion around the periphery thereof such that the side wall of the outer shell is received within the lip portion.
[007] According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided method of manufacturing a water filter comprising the steps of: forming an outer shell of ceramic material; heating the outer shell in an oven at a first temperature; heating the outer shell in the oven at a second temperature, the second temperature being higher than the first.
[008] Preferably the first temperature is around 250 degrees and the second temperature is around 500 degrees.
Brief Description of the Drawings [009] The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the following drawings in which: [010] Figure 1 is a cross sectional view of a water filter in accordance with the present invention.
Detailed Description of Preferred Embodiments [011] Referring to the Figures, there is a water filter 10 comprising an outer shell 12 of a porous material. The outer shell 12 in the embodiment shown comprises a cylindrical side wall 14 and a circular end wall 16. The end wall 16 extends across a first end 18 of the cylindrical side wall 14 and the side wall 14 is open at a second end 19 thereof.
[012] The water filter 10 includes also a cap 20. The cap 20 is provided to seal across the second end 19 of the cylindrical side wall 14 of the outer shell 12. 4 2010201214 16 Oct 2015
The cap 20 comprises a circular body 22 having a lip portion 24 around the periphery thereof. The lip portion 24 receives the second end 19 of the side wall 14 such that the cap 20 closes off the outer shell 12 to define an inner chamber 26.
[013] The cap 20 includes an outlet 28. The outlet 28 comprises a tube extending outwardly from the body 22 such that water from within the inner chamber 26 can exit outwardly through the outlet 28.
[014] The outer shell 12 comprises a ceramic porous material such that when the outer shell 12 is submerged in water, the water will flow through the outer shell 12 and into the inner chamber 26. The process of water passing through the porous outer shell 12 filters the water.
[015] The inner chamber 26 is provided with a dechlorination medium 30. In a preferred embodiment, the dechlorination medium 30 comprises granulated activated carbon. Water coming into contact with the dechlorination medium 30 has chlorine at least partially removed before exiting the outlet 28.
[016] An inner surface 32 of the outer shell 12 is provided with a sterilisation layer 33. The sterilisation layer 33 comprises a coating of colloidal silver such that water passing through the outer shell 12 comes into contact with the colloidal silver of the sterilisation layer 33. The colloidal silver thereby acts to sterilise the water passing through the sterilisation layer 33.
[017] In one embodiment, the height of the outer shell 12 is 98mm and the thickness of the outer shell 12 is 14mm. The diameter of the inner chamber 26 in this embodiment is 41mm and the outer diameter of the outer shell 12 is 58mm. The inner diameter of the cap 20 inside the lip portion 24 is 59mm and the depth of the lip portion is 10mm. The length of the outlet 28 is 42mm and has a bore of 6.5mm.
[018] It is expected that the water filter 10 according to this design can provide up to 700 litres of purified water and provide an average of 1.1 litres of purified water per hour. The ceramic flow rate however depends directly on the water column pressure outside the ceramic. 2010201214 16 Oct 2015 5 [019] Utilising a typical source of drinking water in Australia, the water filter 10 as tested by a leading Australian University produced results showing the active removal of: 99.9% of bacteria 99.4% of zinc 99.9% of amoeba 94.5%of aluminum 98.5% of chlorine 87.0% of lindane 994%ofiron 92.0% of dieldrin 99.7% of copper 93.0% of chloroform 99.6%oflead 95.0% of dichlorobromomethane 99.4% of manganese 97.0% of bromoform [020] The formation of the outer shell 12 of the water filter 10 is via a two stage manufacturing process. In particular the ceramic porous outer shell 12 is formed and then as a first step heated in an oven of around 250 degrees Celsius. As a second stage, the outer shell is heated in the oven at a temperature of around 500 degrees Celsius. This two stage process provides an improved porosity which leads to improved filtration.
[021] It will be readily apparent to persons skilled in the relevant arts that various modifications and improvements may be made to the foregoing embodiments, in addition to those already described, without departing from the basic inventive concepts of the present invention.
