Description

AUSTRALIA Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION INNOVATIVE PATENT A MINI WEEDING TOOL The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of utilising it known to me.
2 A MINI WEEDING TOOL There are a number of weeding tools available on the market. However, when weeding is required in nursery beds, pot plants or the like, most tools on the market are cumbersome and over-sized in design for the task. As a consequence, the 5 gardener will most likely resort to hand or finger-weeding. The present invention has been designed to overcome the disadvantages previously mentioned. The object of the invention is to provide a weeding tool with the necessary 10 features, both in design and size, to overcome the need for hand or finger-weeding. The handle of the tool, being of standard size, can be manufactured from any number of different materials. The working component of the tool being made of a tough but not 15 brittle steel, and being small in design, should allow manufacture at minimal cost. Accordingly, this invention resides in a weeding-tool, comprising a cylindrical type handle, a steel tang inserted into the centre 20 front of the handle, securing a shaft seen extending out from said tang, the end of which is formed into a short right angle bend, said shaft at this point designed as a bracing rib for the attachment of a thin oblong blade, said rib being located on the rear and midway along the blade, and -parallel to the longer 25 sides of the blade, the said blade being seen at right angles to the axis of the said handle, v-shaped notches being cut away from each side of the blade near the handle-end, and a similar single v-shaped notch at the front, central to the width of the blade. 30 In order that the preferred embodiment of the invention may be readily understood, reference is now made to the accompanying drawings: 35 Figure 1 is a full size side view of the weeding-tool. Figure 2 is a view of the blade, the bracing-rib and part of the handle shaft, looking in the direction of Figure 1 The tool as shown in Figure 1 comprises a handle 1, and a 40 steel tang 2, which is forced into the handle. A flat is formed on one side of the tang to aid securing, with additional securing achieved if a hot-type glue is used on the tang before inserting. 45 A shaft 3 extending out from the tang is formed at right angle near its end, forming a bracing rib 4, where an oblong blade 5 3 is affixed. A hole 6 is bored through the end of"the handle to assist in storing the tool, Figure 2 shows a side view of the blade 5, looking in the 5 direction of A, Fig. 1, the handle being omitted for clarity. Vee' notches 7 assist in removing stubborn weeds, the edge 8 of the blade 5 being ground down slightly, assisting the blade to pass through soil. In general use, the approach is to firstly use the tool's blade 10 under the soil to loosen the weeds root system, whereupon the blade is then used to scrape the weed free. It will be understood that the particular embodiment of the invention herein described and illustrated may be subject to 15 many modifications of constructional detail and design without departing from the ambit of the invention as defined by the following claims. 20 25 30 35 40 45

Claims (5)

1. A mini weeding tool comprising a cylindrical type handle, a 5 steel tang inserted into the centre front of the handle, securing a short shaft extending from the said tang, the end of which is formed into a short right-angle bend, said shaft designed as a bracing rib for the attachment of a thin, oblong blade, the longer dimension following in the same 10 plain as the bracing rib projection, the face of the blade being at right angle to the axis of the handle, vee-shaped notches being cut away from each side of the blade near the handle-end, and a similar single v-shaped notch at the front, central to the width of the blade. 15
2. A mini weeding tool as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the blade, being small in area, can be produced of minimum thickness, thus minimising its resistance through the soil.
3. A mini weeding tool according to Claims 1 and 2 wherein the 20 blade is offset to the handle axis, allowing the tool to be used in a number of different weeding applications.
4. A mini weeding tool according to any one of the Claims 1 to 3, when in combination with the design and small working 25 parts of the tool, overcome the need for finger or hand weeding
5. A mini weeding tool substantially as herein described with reference to Fig. 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings. R.R. DE CAMPI 23 NOVEMBER 2010
