Description

FRAME FOR CONCRETE PANELS TECHNICAL FIELD The invention relates to a frame for concrete panels. In particular, the invention relates to a portal framing system to support autoclaved aerated concrete design panels for domestic dwellings. BACKGROUND ART The following descriptions are provided to assist the reader to understand the relevance of the invention. However the background art is not intended and do not of themselves provide any admission by the applicant that they are published as may be required for an assessment of novelty or obviousness or are common general knowledge according to the laws of and in any particular country in the world. In Australia, buildings that are to be used as domestic dwellings have to comply with numerous building codes. The buildings for domestic purposes have to have suitable structural support arrangements, and comply with acoustic, thermal and fire performance requirements. As such in Australia, most domestic dwellings comprise an external wall structure, an internal wall structure, and a framework system there between to support the internal and external wall structures. It would therefore be advantageous to have a system for erecting a domestic dwelling that improves on or alleviates the disadvantages of the prior art. It would be advantageous if there was a single skin wall frame system that removed the requirement for a conventional building frame, and that met the building code 2 requirements for domestic dwellings. It would be of even greater advantage if the system was simple enough to be used by the average owner builder, who wanted to build his/her own domestic dwelling. Autoclaved aerated concrete is a light weight cement based material incorporating small uniformly distributed bubbles that can be used to make floor panels that are light, and have good workability and strength, and can meet the Australian building codes for domestic dwellings with respect to thermal, acoustic and fire performance. The current invention provides a portal framing system to support autoclaved aerated concrete design panels for domestic dwellings. The portal framing system when used with autoclaved aerated concrete panels provides a self supporting single skin wall structure that complies with the Australian building code requirements for domestic dwellings. The portal framing system is also simple enough that when provided in kit form can be used by owner builders to erect their own domestic dwellings. SUMMARY OF INVENTION In one form of this invention although this need not be the only or indeed the broadest of this there is provided a portal framing system to support autoclaved aerated concrete design panels for domestic dwellings where said framing system is a single skin, self supporting structure, where said portal framing system includes a base plate, for supporting said autoclaved aerated concrete design panels, at least two side portal frame posts vertical to the base plate for containing the autoclaved aerated concrete design panels there between and a top plate to complete the frame extending across the upper ends of the side plates. Preferably the plates and posts are made of steel and have predrilled holes such that the framing system can be assembled at the building site.
3 Preferably the lengths of the plates and framing posts and the locations of the pre drilled holes, are pre determined so as that the dimensions of the erected frame are compatible with the dimensions of the autoclaved aerated concrete design panels. In one embodiment of the invention, the base plate is of a Z cross section. In a further embodiment of the invention, the top plate is of an L cross section. In a further embodiment of the invention, the vertically assembled frame posts are of a T cross section when an adjacent wall structure is to be provided. The invention also provides a method for constructing a portal framing system to support autoclaved aerated concrete design panels for domestic dwellings where said framing system is a single skin, self supporting structure, where said method includes, providing a base plate securable to the foundation of the domestic dwelling, attaching two frame posts in predetermined locator positions, said frame posts extending vertically to the base plate, and completing the frame system by securing a top plate to the ends of the vertically extending frame posts, laying autoclaved aerated concrete design panels between the two frame posts and between the top and base plates, to form a wall structure. Optionally the wall frame system may contain braces and toggles as is commonly used in building frames. Where the autoclaved aerated concrete design panels are of an elongated shape, the panels may be laid either vertically or horizontally within the portal framing system. Where the portal frame contains more than one autoclaved aerated concrete design panel within the frame, the panels may be adhered to each other with a suitable adhesive.
4 DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION For a better understanding of the invention, further description will now be given, with reference to drawings in which: Figure 1 illustrates a portal framing system to support autoclaved aerated concrete design panels for domestic dwellings where said framing system is a single skin, self supporting structure, where there is provided a top plate 1, two vertical framing posts 2 with pre drilled holes 3, six autoclaved aerated concrete design panels 4, laid horizontally between the two vertical framing posts, and base plate 5. The autoclaved aerated concrete design panels may alternately be laid vertically. (Not shown) Figure 2 illustrates a cross section of the wall structure showing the L cross section of the top plate 1, and the Z cross section of the base plate 5. Figure 3 details the L shaped top plate 1, attached to a vertical framing post 2, illustrating the T cross section. In practice, it is expected that the portal framing system would be supplied as a kit for the owner builder, with pre determined drilled holes to assemble the components in the correct position, using autoclaved aerated concrete design panels of predetermined dimensions. The builder would lay the base plate on the floor of the building and then connect at least two framing posts to the base of the base plate. A top plate would then be connected to the framing posts to form a rectangular frame. Braces would be used to triangulate the frame if further rigidity is required. The autoclaved aerated concrete design panels would then be positioned within the frame to form the wall structure.
5 Throughout this specification the purpose of the description has been to illustrate the invention and not to limit this.
