Claims (17)
1. A cashless system for validating the use of cashless instruments, the cashless Ssystem comprising: a cashless instrument transaction server comprising: a network interface allowing the cashless instrument transaction server to o communicate with a plurality of gaming devices; and o a database for storing records of cashless instrument transactions C generated on the plurality of gaming device; 0 a processor configured or designed to i) receive a plurality of transaction information elements for each of the cashless instrument transactions from the plurality of gaming devices wherein said transaction information elements are at least for describing a value associated with each of the cashless instrument transactions; ii) generate a first transaction signature from at least one of the plurality of transaction information elements; iii) record the plurality of transaction information elements and the first transaction signature in the database wherein a portion of the plurality of transaction information elements is also stored on a cashless instrument separate from the database; iv) generate a second transaction signature upon a request to access the recorded plurality of transaction information elements, wherein the second transaction signature is generated from at least one of the plurality of transaction information elements recorded in the database as it exists when the request is made; and v) verifying the contents of the database by comparing the first transaction signature, generated when the plurality of transaction elements are recorded in the database, with the second transaction signature, generated after the request is made to access the recorded plurality of transaction elements, to determnnine whether the contents of the database have been altered; the plurality of gaming devices including a first gaming device adapted to provide a first cashless instrument transaction wherein first transaction information elements from the first cashless instrument transaction are stored in the database and including a second gaming device adapted to initiate a second cashless instrument transaction wherein in COMS ID No: ARCS-173961 Received by IP Australia: Time 16:50 Date 2008-01-02 .0B2/01/2008 16:11 +61-2-95522e94 WALSH AND ASSOCIATES PAGE 06/13 00 0 0 l response to the second cashless instrument transaction the first transaction infonmation elements in the database are accessed.

The cashless system of claim 1, wherein the first transaction signature is ogenerated from transactiom information elements received from a first gaming device at a ofirst property and the request to access the recorded plurality of transaction information Cl elements is initiated from a second gaming device at a second property. 00 C'
4. The cashless system of claim 1, wherein the first gaming device or the second gaming device is a device located at a cashier's station.
The cashless system of claim 1, wherein the cashless instrument is a portable credit device.
6- The cashless system of claim 1, wherein the portable credit device is selected from the group consisting of a smart cart card, a debit card or a bar-coded ticket
7. The cashless system of claim 1, wherein the first and second transaction signatures are generated by applying a hashing algorithm to at least one of the plurality of transaction information elements recorded in the database, and wherein the hashing algorithm changes over tine.

The cashless systemi of claim 1, wherein the cashless instrument transaction server is adapted to generate a message that prevents a completion of the second cashless instnunent transaction when the first transaction signature and the second transaction, signature do not match. 9. The cashless system of claim 1, wherein the first gaming device is further adapted to record a value associated with the first cashless instrument transaction on a first 0 cashless instrument.
10. The cashless system of claim 9, wherein the value is recorded to a ticket.

12. The cashless system of claim 9, wherein the second gaming device is further adapted to initiate the second cashless instrument transaction to redeem the value recorded on the first cashless instrument.
13. The cashless system of claim 1, wherein the cashless instrument transaction server is further adapted to validate the database by comparing first transaction information stored in the database with second transaction information stored on a remote gaming device.
14. The cashless system of claim 1, wherein the information in the database is stored in. a non-encrypted format.
The cashless system of claim 1, wherein the first and second transaction signatures are generated by applying a hashing algorithm to at least one of the plurality of transaction information elements recorded in the database, and wherein the at least one of the plurality of transaction information elements used in the hashing algorithm changes over time.
