Actual Inventor(s): Udo Schutz Address for Service and Correspondence: PHILLIPS ORMONDE FITZPATRICK Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys 367 Collins Street Melbourne 3000 AUSTRALIA Invention Title: N.O T SA -O..i TRANSPORT AND STORAGE CONTAINER FOR LIQUIDS Our Ref 780153 POF Code: 20412/106282 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to applicant(s): -1- 600oq Transport and storage container from plastic material This application claims priority from German Application No.10 2005 041 406.0 filed on 1 September 2005 and German Application No.10 2006 037 944.6 filed on 12 August 2006, the contents of which are to be taken as incorporated herein by this reference.
The invention concerns a transport and storage container from plastic material for liquid, pasty, granulated and powdery goods, in particular pallet containers with an inner container from plastic material that stands on a pallet-like base and has a top closeable filler socket and a bottom discharge socket with a draining fitting or a top closeable discharge socket as well as an outer jacket enveloping the inner container, said jacket comprising mesh rods from metal or sheet metal, and plastic barrels.
Plastic containers for the transporting and storage of various goods are, generally speaking, not fire-resistant.
DE 101 61 693 Al describes a pallet container of the generic type with a fireprotective jacket provided between the plastic inner container and the outer jacket, made from sheet metal reflecting heat radiation as well as an additional fire and heat insulation provided between the inner container and the fireprotective jacket; said insulation can be produced from a fabric or fibrous web from glass or aluminium fibres, a ceramic fibrous web from mineral wool or from corrugated board impregnated with fire-resistant water glass.
The manufacture of this known pallet container, the plastic inner container of which is protected against the action of fire by a fire-protective jacket made from a sheet metal that reflects heat radiation and an additional fire and heat insulation provided between the inner container and the fire-protective jacket, is relatively elaborate and consequently expensive.
The object of the invention is to develop a fire-proof transport and storage container for goods of various kinds from plastic material, that can be costeffectively produced.
According to the invention this objective is achieved by a transport and storage container from plastic material according to patent claims 1 and 8.
The sub-claims contain advantageous and useful developments of the invention.
SIn the following two embodiments of the pallet container with an inner container from plastic material according to the invention are explained based on the figures of the drawing, illustrating the following in: Fig. 1 a perspective illustration of a first embodiment of the pallet container, Fig.2 a cross-section of an enlarged detail of the wall of the plastic inner c 10 container with a three-layer construction and of the mesh jacket of the pallet container according to Fig.l, Fig.3 a perspective illustration of a second embodiment of the pallet container, Fig.4 an enlarged partial longitudinal section of the lid region, and an enlarged partial longitudinal section of the bottom region of the container according to Fig.3.
The pallet container laccording to Fig.l, that can be used as a single- and multiple-use container to transport and store liquids, has as its main components a replaceable parallelepiped-shaped inner container 2 from plastic material, with a front wall 3, a rear wall 4 and two lateral walls 5, 6, a bottom and top end 7, 8, a closeable filler socket 9 moulded on the top end 7 that can be closed by a cover 10 and a discharge socket 11 with a draining fitting 12 moulded on the bottom section of the front wall 3, furthermore an outer mesh jacket 13 from intersecting horizontal and vertical metal mesh rods 14, 15 to accommodate the inner container 2 as well as a pallet-like base 16 having longitudinal and lateral dimensions in accordance with European standards.
The bottom end 7 of the inner container 2, constructed as a draining bottom, is fitted with a central draining trough 17 that falls from the rear wall 5 of the container towards the discharge socket 11 in the front wall 3 and the inner container 2 stands with the bottom end 7 on the matching bottom 18 of the base 16.
The bottom 18 of the base 16 of the pallet container 1, that is fitted to be handled by means of forklifts, shelf-storage equipment and similar transporting means, rests on four corner feet 19-22, a rear central foot 23, a front central foot 24 formed from the bottom 18 and provided below the draining fitting 12 of the pallet container 1, as well as on two lateral central feet 25, 26 that are formed by the external ends of a bridge-like reinforcing sheet metal 27 for the bottom 18.
Fig.2 illustrates that the front wall 3, the rear wall 4, the lateral walls 5, 6 as well as the bottom and top ends 7, 8 of the plastic inner container 2, manufactured from a high density polyethylene by extrusion blow moulding, comprise an inner layer 28, a middle layer 29 as well as an outer fire-protective layer 30 against the effect of heat.
For the production of the outer fire-protective layer 30 of the inner container 2 of the pallet container 1 in particular and quite generally of plastic containers, like for example plastic barrels, various plastic materials containing halogens, like fluorine, chlorine, premium or iodine, can be considered.
Furthermore, the fire-protective layer of plastic containers can be manufactured from a polymer plastic, that effected by heat forms non-combustible crusts.
Furthermore, he fire-protective layer of the plastic container can be made from a plastic material, that contains nano-particles of, for example, heat-resistant red phosphorus or alumina.
An effective protection against the effect of fire is offered by an outer fireprotective layer 30, that is made up from expanding graphite. When effected by heat, the expanding graphite expands and forms on the surface of the plastic inner container an intumescent layer 31, schematically illustrated in Fig.2, that envelops, partially or completely, the mesh rods 14, 15 of the mesh jacket 13.
This intumescent layer insulates the contents of the inner container from the flame and prevents a further melting of the polyethylene wall of the inner container.
Furthermore, the fire-protective layer 30 can be formed as a compound layer, that is formed at least from two fire-protective layers, described above.
In the same manner the middle layer 29 of the inner container 2 can be formed as a support layer by a compound layer.
The pallet container 32, illustrated in Fig.3, differs from the pallet container 1 of Fig. 1 by a removable protective cover 33 fastened on the mesh jacket 13, the protective cover having a central access opening 34 to the filler socket 9 of the inner container 2 and by a fire-protective jacket 35 with four lateral walls 35a-35d, inserted into the mesh jacket 13.
The fire-protective jacket 35, the protective cover 33 as well as the bottom 18 and the corner and central feet 19-22, 23-25 of the base 16 of the transport and storage container 32 are made from sheet metal, reflecting heat radiation.
The lateral walls 35a-35d of the fire-protective jacket 35 are firmly clamped between the bottom 18 of the base 16 and the bottom squashed ends 15a of the vertical mesh rods 15 of the mesh jacket 13.
It is also possible to bolt together the lateral walls 35a-35d of the fire-protective jacket 35 with the bottom ends 15a of the vertical mesh rods 15 and/or the bottom frame 36 of the mesh jacket 13.
The insertion of the inner container 2 into the fire-protective jacket 35 is facilitated and a damaging of the inner container during insertion is prevented by virtue of a slightly outward angled top edge 37 of the fire-protective jacket The protective cover 33, inserted with its edge 38 into the top edge 37 of the fireprotective jacket 35, together with the fire-protective jacket 35 is bolted to the top ends 15b of the vertical mesh rods 15 of the mesh jacket 13.
Just like the inner container of the pallet container 1 of Fig.1, the plastic inner container 2, produced by extrusion blow moulding, comprises an inner layer 28, a middle layer 29 as well as an outer fire-protective layer 30 against the effect of heat, while the fire-protective layer may contain the fire-retardant materials described in conjunction with the pallet container of Fig.1.
When the outer single- or multi-layer fire-protective layer 30 of the inner container 2 is manufactured from expanding graphite, in the case of fire the hollow spaces present between the inner container 2 and the lateral walls 35a-35d of the fireprotective jacket 35, the protective cover 33 and the bottom 18 of the base 16 are filled by the intumescent layer 31 of the expanding graphite expanding due to the effect of the heat. In the case of a fire the fire-protective jacket 35, made from sheet metal, and the intumescent layer 31 of the expanding graphite of the outer fire-protective layer 30 of the inner container 2 ensure an effective fire protection for the pallet container.
In the case of a further embodiment of the pallet container, equipped with fire protection, the fire-protective jacket 35 from sheet metal, provided between the inner container 2 and the outer jacket 13, is fitted with a plastic inner and/or outer layer, that contains at least one fire-protective agent against the effect of the heat.
Finally, in the case of the above described transport and storage container the fire-protective layer of the inner container may be coated with an electrically conductive plastic material.
