mHITs specification description updated 14 May 2006 The popularity of a mobile phone as a personal communication device has led to the use of the mobile phone as a transaction tool. The specific use of SMS as a method of interaction and in particular premium SMS for purchasing products and services has also been very popular.
Traditionally the billing infrastructure of the telecommunications provider has been used for the collection of revenues from these services through the use of both premium SMS and premium rate Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems. These systems are restrictive in terms of both transaction value and revenue share available to 3 rd party service providers, and also exposes the telecommunications provider to a significant level of bad debt.
A 3 rd party billing infrastructure to collect payments for these transactions eliminates the financial exposure of transactions to the telecommunications provider. It also allows greater freedom in setting the transaction value and also allows the provision of products and services at a greatly reduced transaction cost to merchants.
A 3 rd party account and billing infrastructure also permits users to perform transactions between themselves, namely that one person can pay another person. These transactions are known as person-to-person payments or p2p transactions.
The mHITs 3 rd party account is an electronic wallet (e-wallet) which is linked to the users mobile phone number. Users must register for the service and undergo an authentication process which involves sending an SMS to their nominated handset to verify their ownership of the mobile phone number.
Users may transfer money into and out of their mHITs e-wallet from a bank account or financial institution.
Users may make and receive payments directly from other mHITs users.
Users may purchase products and services from merchants who are affiliated with the mHITs service and receive payments from registered mHITs users into their mHITs merchant account.
The mHITs system operates in real time and transactions are processed and cleared instantaneously.
