S&F Ref: 668842

PATENTS ACT 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR A STANDARD PATENT Name and Address of Applicant: Actual Inventor(s): Address for Service: Invention Title: Kitkan Pty Ltd 24 Cloete Street Young New South Wales 2594 Australia Bruce Ernest Rowe Spruson Ferguson St Martins Tower Level 31 Market Street Sydney NSW 2000 (CCN 3710000177) A Support for a Bedhead ASSOCIATED PROVISIONAL APPLICATION DETAILS [33] Country [31] Applic. No(s) AU 2003905156 [32] Application Date 12 Sep 2003 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us:- 5815c -1- A SUPPORT FOR A BEDHEAD Field of the Invention The present invention relates to bedheads and, in particular, to a stand alone support for a bedhead.
Background of the Invention There are generally two types of common bed arrangements, one where the mattress is supported by a mattress style base (ensemble style bed) and one where the mattress is supported by a frame normally of wood or steel. The frame will usually include a bedhead. No bedhead is provided with the more popular ensemble style bed.
Accordingly, if a user wants a bedhead for an ensemble style bed, a separate bedhead needs to be purchased and installed between the wall and the bed. The bedhead should also be secured to the wall, floor, bed and/or an adjacent piece of furniture such as the bedside tables. In most cases, bedheads are not sufficiently secured and move when movement occurs on the bed. It is also difficult to find bedheads of the right size and shape to be secured correctly due to the extensive range of heights and shape configurations sold by bedding companies. The method of securing the bedheads is usually visible and looks unsightly. If the bedhead is attached to the legs of an ensemble base, for example, by means of a bracket, when the user leans against the bedhead or makes any quick movement on the bed, the bedhead will bump against the wall not only creating noise and a shearing force on the bracket but also possible holes in the wall.
Accordingly, there is a need to provide a stand alone bed head which is independent, secure, and can be adjusted to suit all available height and shape configurations of an ensemble style bed. Further, it would be advantageous to provide a bedhead with no indication of the fixing points or attachment to the bed and which is sufficiently strong restricting movement of the bedhead.
Object of the Invention It is an object of the present invention to overcome or ameliorate some of the disadvantages of the prior art, or at least to provide a useful alternative.
Summary of the Invention There is firstly disclosed herein a support for a bedhead including: an elongate base member for positioning on a floor; [R:\LIBLL] 14801 speci.doc:keh:hxa:KEH an elongate wall member for positioning adjacent a wall and fixed to said base member to be generally perpendicular thereto; securing means to secure said bedhead to said wall member; and wherein said base member includes adjustment means manipulated by a user to alter the s orientation of said base member relative to said floor to urge said wall member and thereby said bedhead towards said wall.
Preferably, said adjustment means is adjacent a distal end of said base member.
Preferably, said adjustment means includes a threaded fastener.
Preferably, said wall member and base member are connected by a bracket.
Preferably, said securing means includes a threaded fastener.
Preferably, said wall member includes protrusions.
Preferably, said protrusions act as buffers between said wall member and said wall.
Preferably, said base member includes at least one foot.
Preferably, said support is integrally formed with a bedhead.
Brief Description of the Drawings A preferred form of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 is a front view of an embodiment of a bedhead and support of the present invention; Figure 2 is a front view of another embodiment of a bedhead support of the present invention; Figure 3 is a cross-sectional side view of Figure 2 in situ; Figure 4 is an enlarged partial side view of Figure 3.
Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments The present invention is schematically depicted in Figures 1 to 4 and includes a support 1 for a bedhead 5. The support 1 includes an elongate base member 10 for positioning on a floor 15. An elongate wall member 20 for positioning adjacent a wall is fixed to the base member 10 so as to be generally perpendicular thereto. The base and wall members 10, 20 can be manufactured of any suitable material. The base and wall members 10, 20 can be fixed by any suitable means and in Figures 1 to 4 a 50 x 50 mm angle bracket 30 is utilised. Securing means 35 in the form of threaded fasteners secure [R:\LIBLL] 14801 speci.doc:keh:hxa:KEH -3the bedhead 5 to the wall member 20. Other suitable securing means 35 could be used, for example, glue or nails. The base member 10 includes adjustment means 40 at a distal end 45 of the base member 10 which is manipulated by a user to alter the orientation of the base member 10 relative to the floor 15 to urge the wall member 20 towards the wall 25. The adjustment means 40 in Figures 1 to 4 includes a threaded member 42 which includes a nut, bolt and washer arrangement which can be manipulated by the user to extend the length of the bolt shaft extending between the base member 10 and floor 15 to increase the height of the distal end 45 of the base member 10 from the floor 15. The base member 10 can also include rubber feet 50 or the like to protect the floor surface and aid in preventing unwanted movement of the support 1. The bedhead 5 and wall member can similarly include buffers or protrusions In use, the bedhead 5 and support 1 are delivered to a user separately or in kit form and assembled on site or at the factory. Once assembled the support 1 and bedhead are positioned against a wall 25 and an ensemble style bed moved into place over the base member 10. A user manipulates the adjustment means 40 by rotating, for example in Figure 3, the nut and bolt arrangement 42 to elevate the base member 10 from the floor pushing the buffers 55 into contact with the wall 25. Once secured in place the support 1 should retain the bedhead 5 in the preselected position even when movement occurs on the bed.
Although the invention has been described with reference to specific examples, it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the invention may be embodied in many other forms.
