Abstract
The invention relates to a composition, in particular that may be foamed, with improved skin effect, based on an O/W emulsion with a combination of a silicone-based emulsifier and, in particular, an ionic surfactant. Stable emulsions can be formed with such a composition, which, on application, can be either dispersed or effectively foamed, with or without a propellant gas, which can then be easily applied to the skin and which there generates a particularly fine dispersion of the composition in the form of an emulsion, for example as a foam and which gives an improved skin sensation. The invention further relates to a simple production method and the use thereof for the care, treatment or mild cleansing of the skin, in particular also in the case of dysfunctional skin.
Description
IN THE MATTER OF an Australian Application corresponding to PCT Application PCT/EP2003/011528 RWS Group Ltd, of Europa House, Marsham Way, Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, England, hereby solemnly and sincerely declares that, to the best of its knowledge and belief, the following document, prepared by one of its translators competent in the art and conversant with the English and German languages, is a true and correct translation of the PCT Application filed under No. PCT/EP2003/011528 Date: 27 January 2005 C. E. SITCH Deputy Managing Director - UK Translation Division For and on behalf of RWS Group Ltd WO 2004/039338 PCT/EP2003/011528 O/W EMULSION WITH A COMBINATION OF A SILICONE-BASED EMULSIFIER AND ONE OR SEVERAL SURFACTANTS SELECTED FROM ANIONIC AND CATIONIC SURFACTANTS, THE PRODUCTION AND USE THEREOF 5 Description The present invention relates to a, in particular foamable, composition with improved skin effect based on an O/W emulsion with a combination of a silicone 10 based emulsifier and a, in particular anionic, surfactant. With such a composition it is possible for stable emulsions, with or without propellant gas, to be distributed or effectively foamed during use; these can then be applied easily to the skin and there achieve in 15 particular a particularly fine distribution of the composition in the form of an emulsion, e.g. in the form of foam, and produce an improved feel on the skin. The invention further relates to a simple method for producing this and to the use for the care, treatment 20 or mild cleansing of the skin, in particular also in the case of dysfunctional skin. Prior art Foamable creams have hitherto been produced in various 25 ways with propellant gases possibly being obligatory depending on the composition. For example, DE 36 28 531.5 describes a foamable O/W based cream which functions only with certain propellant gases, and then only in the presence 30 exclusively of a nonionic surfactant if the composition has a viscosity of from 290 to 450 mPas. The emulsifiers/surfactants specified are in particular alkylpolyglycol phosphoric esters, glyceryl stearate and PEG derivatives thereof, emulsifiers based on 35 silicones are not envisaged. DE 196 45 320.8 describes foamable compositions which, besides an oil phase, obligatorily have light protection factors and a combination of three different -2 nonionic surfactants, namely glucose derivatives (esters), polyoxyethylated esters and glyceride esters. This reportedly achieves a higher light protection filter effect than hitherto, for which reason 5 electrolytes in particular are also required. DE 199 55 375.0 likewise relates to foamable sunscreen compositions in the form of an O/W emulsion, where, besides the light protection factors, a combination of a nonionic or self-emulsifying emulsifier and one or 10 several surfactants, in particular a glutamate or a zwitterionic betain, are present. The emulsifiers chosen are polyoxyethylene fatty acid esters, such as Arlatone®, Myrjo, self-emulsifying fatty alcohols (Lanetteo N) or mono-/diglyceride fatty acid esters 15 (Imwitor®) . Here, the oil phase, comprising the emulsifier, is mixed with the water phase and then the foam-forming surfactant is added, the emulsifier being present in the same amount as or a greater amount than the surfactant. 20 Emulsifiers based on polysiloxane are known, especially for the production of creams, lotions etc. They generally have good emulsifying properties and are suitable for sprayable products. One product which is 25 particularly known here is the commercial product known under the name Abil® Care 85, which is bis-PEG/PPG 16/16 PEG/PPG-16/16 dimethicone and is available as an approximately 85% strength solution in an oil such as caprylic/capric triglyceride. As such, it is used in 30 concentrations of from 1.5 to 3%. However, when producing emulsions, for reasons of stability, nonionic coemulsifiers such as TEGO@ SMO 80 V (polysorbate-80) (cold production, e.g. for sprays) or Teginacido C (ceteareth-25) (hot production e.g. for creams), and 35 stabilizers, such as xanthan gum, TEGO® Carbomer (cold production for emulsions or sprays) or stearyl alcohol, glyceryl stearate, stearic acid (hot production for creams) should be added, cf. SoWF (2002), 128, page 22- -3 31. Reference is made here in particular to the difficulties during the production of sprayable emulsions (page 23), for which reason these are also prepared cold and only using special stabilizers (see 5 above). However, to date still. no foamable products therewith have been described. EP-B 1 014 916 relates to alkali skin protection creams based on soap which must comprise at least one C10-22 fatty acid and emulsifiers and coemulsifiers which are 10 prepared by mixing the fatty phase heated to 250C together with fatty acid with the water phase heated to 750C and subsequently increasing the pH to > 7.2. EP-B 0 835 647 describes compositions in the form of a gel emulsion which, besides a fatty phase, have 0.1-2% 15 of a gel-forming system comprising, as gel emulsifier, a homopolymer based on acrylate or a copolymer based on ethylenically unsaturated monomers. For this purpose, gel formers such as xanthan gum, Carbomer® etc. should also be present. Surfactants, which are not described 20 in more detail, must only be present in an amount up to at most 2%. The product is after-foaming, i.e. it is not dispensed in the form of a foam. DE 100 59 239 Al relates to cosmetic and/or 25 pharmaceutical emulsions comprising long-chain (hydroxy) fatty acids, such as hydroxystearic acids, and oils and optionally emulsifiers which can be chosen from various groups. Among others, those based on polysiloxane polyalkyl are specified generally, with 30 none being mentioned according to the examples. Only oils based on siloxane are mentioned, namely di-/cyclo and/or cetyldimethicone. If O/W or, in particular, W/O emulsions are produced, polyglyceryl derivatives (Eumulgin VL 75*, Dehymuls PGPH ), for example, are 35 used as emulsifier. A foamability of such substances is stated nowhere. DE 100 48 683 describes W/O emulsions, where the emulsifiers used are alkyl(di)methicone copolyols, e.g.
-4 Abil EM 90. The compositions obtained in this way are merely referred to as sprayable. Object of the invention 5 It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a composition which, with or without the use of propellant gases, is readily distributable, in particu lar foamable, and is easy to produce, and, even without the special use of complex emulsifier and/or surfactant 10 mixtures or obligatorily coemulsifiers/stabilizers or gel formers, leads to stable products. Attainment of the invention This object is achieved according to the invention by a 15 composition which, based on an 01W emulsion, is characterized in that it has 2 to 50% of an oil phase, 0.1 to 10% of one or several silicone-based emulsifier(s), 0.1 to 20% of one or several surfactant(s) chosen from anionic and cationic 20 surfactants, 0 to 40% of additives and water as the remainder. The composition is, in particular, foamable. Explanation of the invention With such a composition which is not based on an 25 alkaline soap base, it is surprisingly possible to prepare stable products, even without using special stabilizers, which are very readily distributed, in particular are foamable, during use as a result of foamability. As a result, on account of the very much 30 more finely distributed product compared with conventional applied emulsions, an improved effect on the skin is achieved and additionally due to the silicone emulsifier a particularly rich and smooth skin feel is generated. 35 The composition can comprise varying amounts of water, fatty phase, emulsifier and optionally additives. Then, depending on the intended use, a lotion, a fluid or a cream, for example, are obtained. The lotion can have, -5 for example, 70% water, and the cream 50% water. According to the invention, it is therefore not necessary- for nonionic surfactants, fatty acids, to be incorporated. These are therefore preferably 5 essentially not present. Preferably, 0.1 to 8%, in particular 0.5 to 5% of one or several emulsifiers based on silicone, 0.1 to 18%, in particular 0.3 to 15% of one or several surfactants are present. 10 These are in particular O/W silicone-based emulsifiers, in amounts as stated, in particular as described below. The amount of oil phase is preferably 3 to 35%, in particular 3 to 25% and very particularly preferably 4 to 25%. 15 It is particularly preferred if one or several polysiloxane-polyether copolymers (dimethicone copolyols) are present as emulsifier, namely O/W emulsifiers in particular. Of these, one or several polyethylene glycol (PEG)-/polypropylene glycol (PPG) 20 polysiloxane copolymers with varying amounts of PEG and PPG of in each case 1-20 units based on a polyether block in the ratio 1:0 to 0.9:1, in particular 1:0 to 1:1 are very particularly suitable. These include in particular the PEG/PPG dimethicones in 25 the form of O/W emulsifiers. These include in particular PEG/PPG-20/6 dimethicones, bis-PEG/PPG-20/20 dimethicones, PEG-12 or PEG-14 dimethicones, PEG/PPG-14/4 or 14/12 or 14/14 or 20/20 or 18/18 or 17/18 or 15/15 dimethicones, bis-PEG/PPG 30 16/16 PEG/PPG-16/16 dimethicones or mixtures thereof. Of particular suitability here are the products known under the name Abil®, such as, for example, Abil® Care 85 = bis-PEG/PPG-16/16 PEG-PPG-16/16 dimethicones (e.g. 85% strength in caprylic/capric triglyceride). 35 In addition, the silicone polyethers known under the name Abil® 8842 (1:0), 8843 (1:0), 8851 (1.4:4); 8852 (1.4:1.2); 8863 (1:1); and Dow Corning® 193 (1:0) are also particularly suitable.
-6 These silicone-based emulsifiers can be used as they are or else in the form of solutions/dispersions in oils, such as, for example, triglycerides, in particular medium-chain triglycerides or else suitable 5 other oils, such as silicone oils. They are, for example, in amounts of from 40 to 90%, preferably 55 to 90%, and 85% strength solutions in caprylic/capric triglyceride are particularly suitable. 10 The oil phase comprises in particular customary, preferably liquid or wax-like, lipids. It is also preferred if the additives are chosen from active ingredients, stabilizers, dyes, perfume 25 substances, consistency regulators, care substances, cosurfactants and preservatives. Of these, 0.01 to 30%, in particular 0.5 to 20%, in particular, are present. Suitable surfactants are anionic and cationic 30 surfactants. Of suitability here are the surfactants known in these groups. Preferably, one or several anionic surfactants are chosen as surfactants. These include alkyl sulfates and 35 alkyl ether sulfates, in particular with 1-6 ethylene oxide groups in the molecule, and alkyl sulfosuccinates, and alkyl ethoxysulfosuccinates, alkyl sulfosuccinamates, alkyl sarcosinates, isethionates, -9 taurides, ether carboxylic acids, alkylsulfonates and alkylbenzenesulfonates, a-olefinsulfonates, alkyl sulfoacetates, where in the alkyl moiety in particular 8-22, preferably up to 18, carbon atoms are present. 5 In particular, those chosen from alkyl sarcosinates, alkyl sulfates, alkyl ether sulfates, alkyl sulfosuccinates, alkyl sulfosuccinnamates, isethionates, or alkali metal salts thereof or mixtures thereof are suitable. These have in particular 8 to 22, 10 preferably 8 to 16, carbon atoms in the alkyl chain. The abovementioned surfactants can be used as they are - 10 or in combination with suitable solvents, which are governed by the nature of the surfactant. It is thus possible to use solutions, in particular aqueous solutions, of 20-90%, preferably 25-70%, in particular 5 28-50%. The ratio of emulsifier to surfactant, in each case based on the total amount, is very particularly preferably 1:0.2 to 1:15, but especially 1:0.5 to 1:10 and in particular 1:0.7 to 1:7. 10 The amount of surface-active substances, in particular the sum of emulsifier(s) + surfactant(s) can also suitably be greater than 1.4%, or else greater than 2%. In particular, fatty alcohols, cellulose derivatives or mixtures thereof are suitable as consistency regulators. The care substances used are in particular moisturizers such as glycerol and/or polymers and/or 15 polysaccharides. Suitable perfume substances and/or dyes are primarily compositions, or dyes customary for cosmetics, and particularly preferred active ingredients are vitamins and plant extracts, UV filters, antioxidative 20 substances, panthenol and/or allantoin and/or mineral substances and derivatives thereof. The composition according to the invention may be contained in and dispensed from devices customary for 25 emulsions. Upon leaving and rubbing on/with air, the finely distributed, finely bubbled or optionally foam like product, as described, is produced on the skin. According to the invention, the in particular foamable composition can preferably be in the form of a foam. 30 For this purpose, it can, for example, be contained in a foam dispenser with a suitable pump mechanism or else together with a suitable propellant gas in an aerosol device. Here, the product is obtained directly as foam and is not after-foaming, as described in the above 35 prior art. The aerosol device can have a pressurized gas container with propellant, a distributor device with valve, spray head, and the composition. Suitable propellant gases are commercial gases or gas - 20 mixtures customary for this purpose, such as C0 2 , N 2 ,
N
2 0 or mixtures thereof, such as C0 2
:N
2 0 1:1 to 0.5:1. Very particular preference is given to gases such as butane/propane/isobutane or mixtures thereof, as are 5 commercially available for aerosols, e.g. a 3-5:20-25:65-73, as available, for example, as Drivosol@ (35A). The gas may be present in compressed form in amounts of from 2 to 20%, preferably 3-13%, in particular 4-8%, based on the finished product. 10 However, the quantitative ratios can also be varied in other ratios depending on the total amount of the product and the size of the container. Suitable devices for administering the composition according to the invention in the form of an aerosol 15 are known, as are those for application free from propellant gas. In this connection it is possible, for example, to use mechanical foam dispensers operating according to the principle of an air pump, such as Squeeze Foamer (F2 finger pump foamer, commercially 20 available), Rieke dispensing from Englass or Foamer from Airspray, the finished emulsion in each case being bottled in a suitable manner. The composition is preferably contained in conventional dispensing vessels. In particular, it is dispensed from a foam 25 dispenser or an aerosol container filled with propellant gas. Preparation The compositions according to the invention are 30 prepared by mixing the oil phase, the emulsifier or the emulsifiers, optionally together with thermally stable oil-soluble additives and optionally heating to 50 to 85 0 C and then adding the aqueous phase, optionally heated to 50 to 85*C and comprising water, the 35 surfactant or the surfactants and optionally thermally stable additives, with stirring and then, if necessary, cooling the resulting emulsion and, if present, adding thermally labile additives. The emulsion prepared in - 21 this way can then be bottled in a known manner into suitable containers for administration, e.g. from customary dispensers, dispensing devices or vessels, or for dispensing in foam form into the above-described 5 pump dispensers or aerosol containers. Use In particular, the composition according to the invention can be used for the care, the cosmetic or 10 dermatological treatment of skin for freshening, reviving, moisture regulation, calming or for mild cleansing, in particular also in the case of dysfunctional, especially dry or low-moisture, skin, or else for protection of the skin. The effect, which can 15 be aided by corresponding additives as described above, is achieved in particular through the particularly fine distribution of the composition in the form of an emulsion, e.g. especially in the form of a foam, where, moreover, an improved skin feel is unexpectedly 20 produced through the use of the emulsifier together with the specified surfactants. As mentioned, the product can be dispensed by means of conventional dispensing vessels, dispensers, by means of a device with a pump mechanism or from containers 25 containing aerosol. It is assumed, without laying down such an explanation, that on account of the combination according to the invention the physicochemical properties of the composition are such that the fine distribution of the product upon use occurs as a result 30 of rubbing on/with air/aerosol, i.e. through the possibility of the formation of foam. The product can therefore be applied as such or in the form of a foam. Examples 35 The invention is explained in more detail by reference to the examples below. The products in accordance with the application corresponding to Examples 1 to 7 exhibit, as described, good foam formation with small-pored foam which does not rapidly collapse, and stability. 10 The compositions according to the attached Examples 8 to 11 were prepared by the method given on page 20 of the present description. These Examples 8 to 11 are comparative products according to the prior art. As for Examples 1 to 7, 15 their behavior upon exiting from an aerosol device containing propellant gas was assessed. In each case a large-pored liquid foam was obtained (by visual observation) which rapidly collapsed. Examples 8 and 9 exhibit products with the polysiloxane emulsifier Abil® 20 Care 85 according to the invention, but without anionic or cationic surfactants, but with the nonionic surfactant tristeareth-4 phosphate (Hostaphat® KW 340 D) or steareth-21 (Brij 721) according to the prior art as described in the application page 5, paragraph 2 25 for Abil®. In Example 10, the nonionic surfactant present is Tween 80 and also the stabilizer is an acrylate-based polymer, namely Aristoflex AVCO as in EP - 30 B 0835 647 (prior art as described in the application on page 3, paragraph 2). In Example 11, the nonionic surfactant chosen is Tween 80. It is evident from this that, in contrast to the prior art, stable foam 5 compositions can surprisingly only be obtained if certain O/W-based polysiloxane emulsifiers are used which are then combined especially not with the coemulsifiers hitherto obligatory or else certain stabilizers. This was not expected since the prior art 10 teaches precisely the opposite, namely that such substances in particular should be obligatory for stable emulsions, particular when they are prepared hot.
