Description

AUSTRALIA
Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION INNOVATION PATENT READY FRAMED PAINTING SURFACE The following statement is a full description of this innovation, including the best method of performing it known to me.
READY FRAMED PAINTING SURFACE The innovation relates to improvements in devices for creating framed paintings.
There are many types of surfaces artists use for painting on. These include canvas, canvas boards, stretched canvas, various fabrics and wooden or composite panels, or paper. When completed, the painting is usually framed. The frame enhances the appearance of the art work, protects it and makes it easier to hang.
Because a picture frame is usually made to fit a particular painting, the benefits of mass production are absent. If picture frames and painting boards (or stretched canvases or the like) were made to fit one another, ready made, then mass production would be possible. However, while canvas, painting boards and other painting surfaces are easily stored, picture frames are relatively fragile and awkward to stack until sold to the artist and securely fastened to the painting.
The present innovation overcomes these problems by making the painting surface and the picture frame as an integral unit. The framed painting surface is stronger than its two parts, each reinforcing the strength and rigidity of the other and the units can be stored and stacked easily.
Many artists are keen to paint but find the business of making a picture frame or finding a frame to fit or taking the painting to a picture framer and getting a frame made, to be irksome, expensive and time consuming.
The present innovation lends itself to economies of scale and improved quality control processes.
It results in a stronger product with improved freighting and storage capacity than if the components were produced separately. It provides the artist with a convenient, ready made framed painting surface, easy to use and at a potentially lower cost.
Many different painting surfaces and picture frame profiles could be produced and picture frames could be painted in a variety of finishes or primed ready for the artist to paint. Where a frame is ready painted, it can be protected with cling wrap or the like or coated with Polyvinyl Alcohol which can be washed off after the painting is finished. Where the frame is primed only, paper can be slid between the painting and the frame so that when the frame is painted the painting itself is masked off.
To better understand the invention, reference is now made to the enclosed drawing which shows one form of the invention.
1 shows a painting board glued and/or stapled to a picture frame 2 from the back. A small gap 3 is provided between the painting board and the picture frame to allow paper to be inserted so that with a primed only frame, the painting can be masked to prevent paint used on the frame contacting the painting.
It will be realized that the drawing shows only one arrangement of the invention, wherein a painting board is used as the painting surface and a primed only frame is used. Many other types of painting surface could be used and frames may be ready painted. Frames are conventionally made of wood, but could easily be moulded, cast or extruded using various casting mediums or plastics such as filled polyester, ciment fondu, PVA or composites.

Claims (4)

1. A painting surface is used consisting of canvas, or stretched canvas, or canvas board, or wooden panel or composite panel or paper or any other material suitable for painting on.
2. The painting surface of claim 1 is stapled and/or glued or otherwise attached to a picture frame made of wood or cast or extruded or moulded from plastic or other materials.
3. The picture frame may be painted or primed only and the frame or the painting is masked off. A small gap between the frame and the painting surface is provided to facilitate the masking off.
4. Since artists have differing opinions about the positioning of hanging points, suitable hanging attachments and cord or wire are provided with the framed painting surface but not attached. The painting surface and frame in claim 2 could be fastened together using small screws thus enabling the painting to be separated from the frame if the artist so desired. Bryan Newell 7 th June 2001
