Abstract

Drilling long horizontal boreholes below ground produces long horizontal bores (1) in the ground, from an initial subsurface point of desired depth. Here the drive (9) turns a string of drilling rods, making axial (3), horizontal progress in a given direction. The vertical shaft is of constant cross section. Rods (6) to be joined to, or removed from the drill string (7) are lowered to a horizontal position corresponding with the drilling axis, connection or detachment taking place in the shaft, on this axis. Also claimed is the corresponding equipment to drive the horizontal bore. This includes a derrick and rods shorter than its open internal cross section.
