Abstract

La incorporación de partículas duras en una matriz formadora de la superficie de una pieza puede incrementar considerablemente la resistencia al desgaste. El uso práctico del diamante en aplicaciones industriales es limitado, ya que la estructura del carbono se descompone a grafito en condiciones de aire a temperaturas superiores a 700ºC. Cuando se expone a hierro fundido, la superficie del diamante también puede reaccionar químicamente y disolverse en el hierro. Los compuestos metálicos que recubren el diamante pueden proporcionar una o más capas protectoras que limitan el contacto de la superficie del diamante con aquellos elementos que degradarían su estructura. La cobertura puede proporcionar asimismo una superficie humectable para la matriz fundida durante el procesamiento, a fin de mejorar la retención de la partícula en la matriz.
