In one embodiment, the methods comprise: obtaining a treatment fluid comprising a base liquid and a sulfide scrubber additive comprising one or more reducing sugars; introducing the treatment fluid into at least a portion of an underground formation and allowing at least a portion of the sulfide scrubber additive to interact with hydrogen sulfide or the sulfide ions present in the treatment fluid to produce a precipitate comprising a or more sulfur species.
