Abstract

An acid solution containing iron or sulfur oxidizing bacteria is introduced into a cell containing chalcopyrite ore that contacts that mineral. Such contact will release the copper from the mineral. During this procedure, a gas containing oxygen is introduced into the cell as a source of oxygen for the bacteria. The oxygen-containing gas is introduced into the cell with the temperature and saturation under control to maintain a substantial portion of the cell at a temperature such that the thermophilic bacteria leach chalcopyrite at an economically acceptable rate. A heap leaching system (1) is also revealed that operates according to the method. It also sedivulgates a device for heap leaching that includes: a) A pile of a mineral containing chalcopyrite, b) A system for irrigating the acid solution, c) A system for collecting leachate. d) An aeration system to introduce a gas containing oxygen.
