Abstract

A sintered material and the tough powder with tough coating (TCHP) for making such material comprises core particles consisting essentially of a first metallic compound of formula MaXb, where M is a metal selected from a group consisting of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, aluminum, boron and silicon; while X represents one or more elements selected from a group consisting of nitrogen, carbon, boron and oxygen. The letters a and b represent numbers greater than zero and less than and equal to four. The core particles are surrounded by an intermediate layer consisting essentially of a second metal compound, different in terms of the composition of the first metal compound that forms coated particles with it. The material of the intermediate layer has a higher fracture toughness than the material that composes the nucleus particles and is capable of bonding with the metal compounds that make up the nucleus particles and also with iron, cobalt or nickel. The coated particles are surrounded by an outer layer of iron, cobalt, nickel, their alloys, mixtures and intermediates. The intimate relationship of the alloys of the multiple properties within the TCHP grains, allows to combine the performance characteristics of the sintered articles, which are normally conflicting (for example, resistance and hardness).
