Abstract
cushion assembly for a patient interface for sealed delivery of a flow of air at a continuously positive pressure with respect to ambient air pressure to an entrance to a patient's airways including at least entrance of a patient's nares, wherein the patient interface is configured to maintain a therapy pressure in a range of about 4 cmH20 to about 30 cmH20 above ambient air pressure in use, throughout the patient's respiratory cycle, while the patient is sleeping, to ameliorate sleep disordered breathing, the cushion assembly comprising: a foam cushion configured to sealingly engage the patient’s face; an elastomeric support portion configured to support the foam cushion and form at least part of a plenum chamber with the foam cushion; and a blowout prevention system configured to counter a force acting on the foam cushion and the elastomeric support portion due to a pressure within the chamber, the blowout prevention system being attached to the elastomeric support portion, wherein a portion of the elastomeric support portion is positioned between the foam cushion and the blowout prevention system.
Claims (18)
1. A cushion assembly for a patient interface for sealed delivery of a flow of air at a continuously positive pressure with respect to ambient air pressure to an entrance to a patient's airways including at least entrance of a patient's nares, wherein the patient interface is configured to maintain a therapy pressure in a range of about 4 cmH20 to about 30 cmH20 above ambient air pressure in use, throughout the patient's atory cycle, while the patient is ng, to ameliorate sleep disordered breathing, the cushion assembly comprising: a foam cushion configured to sealingly engage the t’s face; an elastomeric support n configured to support the foam cushion and form at least part of a plenum chamber with the foam cushion; and a blowout prevention system configured to counter a force acting on the foam cushion and the elastomeric t portion due to a pressure within the chamber, the blowout prevention system being ed to the elastomeric support portion, n a portion of the elastomeric support portion is positioned between the foam cushion and the blowout prevention system.
2. The cushion assembly of claim 1, wherein the elastomeric support portion comprises a folded section that acts as a seat for the foam n.
3. The cushion ly of claim 2, wherein the blowout prevention system comprises at least one rib attached to a side of the folded section of the elastomeric support n that is opposite a side of the folded section to which the foam cushion is attached.
4. The n assembly of claim 3, wherein the at least one rib is compressible.
5. The cushion assembly of any one of claims 3 to 4, wherein the at least one rib is more resistant to tension than compression.
6. The cushion assembly of any one of claims 3 to 5, wherein the at least one rib comprises a pair of ribs positioned to be on opposite sides of the patient’s nose, in use.
7. The cushion assembly of any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein different ns of the elastomeric support portion have different rigidities.
8. The cushion assembly of any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein the elastomeric support portion is more compressible at a nasal bridge portion of the n assembly that is configured to engage the patient’s nasal bridge in use.
9. The n assembly of claim 8, wherein the elastomeric support portion is less compressible at a chin portion or an upper lip portion than at the nasal bridge portion, wherein the chin n is at a location on the cushion assembly configured to engage the patient’s chin in use, and wherein the upper lip portion is at a on on the cushion assembly configured to engage the patient’s upper lip in use.
10. The cushion assembly of claim 9, wherein the meric support portion is least compressible in intermediate regions between the nasal bridge portion and the chin portion or between the nasal bridge portion and the upper lip portion.
11. The cushion assembly of claim 10, wherein the blowout prevention system comprises at least one rib positioned in the ediate regions.
12. The cushion assembly of claim 11, wherein the at least one rib comprises a plurality of ribs.
