Claims (1)

  1. - 16- *42936;WHAT WE CLAIM IS:;1. A process for treating and disinfecting "water and/or wastewater which includes introducing an aqueous solution into a chamber containing water and/or wastewater, said process comprising the steps of:;(a) introducing into the chamber containing said water and/or wastewater an aqueous solution prepared by mixing at a pH less than 7 and at a temperature less than substantially 48.9°C said aqueous solution comprising (1) an organic hydroxy acid or carboxylic acid and (2) an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal chlorite;;(b) sealing the contents of said chamber from the atmosphere;;(c) pressurizing the chamber to a pressure above atmospheric pressure; and;(d) detaining the contents of said chamber for a period of time of no more than 5 minutes whereby substantially all bacteria, microbes and other pathogenic organisms are destroyed in said water and/or wastewater.;2 The process of claim 1. wherein the water temperature of said aqueous solution is in the range of substantially 15.6°C to substantially 26.7°C.;3 The process of claim 1, wherein an influent line of said chamber is positioned above an effluent line of said chamber; and said effluent line of said chamber is positioned above a top of said chamber; and wherein the liquid contents of said chamber are thereby under greater than atmospheric pressure.;4 A process for treating and disinfecting water and/or wastewater which includes introducing an aqueous solution into a chamber containing water and/or wastewater, said process comprising the steps of:;(a) introducing into the chamber containing said water and/or wastewater an aqueous solution prepared by mixing at a pH less than 7 and at a temperature less than substantially 48.9°C said aqueous solution comprising (1) lactic acid and (2) sodium chlorite;;(c) pressurizing the chamber to a pressure above atmospher. , ,;and;(b) sealing the contents of said chamber from the atmosphe;-17-;(d) detaining the contents of said chamber for a period of time of no more than 5 minutes whereby substantially all bacteria, microbes and other pathogenic organisms are destroyed in said water and/or wastewater.;5 The process of claim 4, wherein the water temperature of said aqueous solution is in the range of substantially 15.6°C to substantially 26.7°C.;6 The process of claim 1, wherein the organic acid is citric acid.;7 The process of claim 1. wherein the organic acid is malic acid.;8 The process of claim 1, wherein the organic acid is tartaric acid.;9 The process of claim 1, wherein the organic acid is glycolic acid.;10 The process of claim 1, wherein the organic acid is mandelic acid.;11 The process of claim 1, wherein the organic acid is oxalic acid.;12 The process of claim 4, wherein an influent line of said chamber is positioned above an effluent line of said chanter; and said effluent line of said chamber is positioned above a top of said chamber; and wherein the liquid contents of said chamber are thereby under greater than atmospheric pressure.;13 An apparatus for treating and disinfecting water and/or wastewater comprising:;(a) a chamber;;(b) said chamber having an inlet line and an outlet line for the water and/or wastewater;;(c) means for containing an aqueous solution of (1) an organic hydroxy acid or carboxylic acid and (2) an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal chlorite:;(d) means for providing said aqueous solution to said chamba^?*^ 0 -, x (e) said chamber being sized to provide a detention time of/go more than 5 minutes for the water and/or wastewater; and |L V V " \ - 18- (f) said chamber being sealed from the atmosphere said apparatus thereby effective to destroy substantially all bacteria, microbes and other pathogenic organisms in said water and/or wastewater. 14 The apparatus of claim 13, further comprising said chamber having means for providing a pressure of greater than 1 atmosphere on the contents of said chamber. 15 The apparatus of claim 14, wherein: said means for providing a pressure of greater than 1 atmosphere on the contents of the chamber further comprises (a) having the elevation of the inlet line of said chamber above the elevation of the outlet line of said chamber: (b) having the elevation of the outlet line of said chamber above the elevation of the top of said chamber; and (c) whereby the liquid contents of said chamber are under greater than atmospheric pressure. 16 The process of claim 1, wherein the contents of said chamber are under a pressure ranging from substantially one atmosphere to substantially two atmospheres. 17 The process of claim 4, wherein the contents of said chamber are under a pressure ranging from substantially one atmosphere to substantially two atmospheres. 18 The apparatus of claim 13 wherein the contents of said chamber are under pressure ranging from substantially one atmosphere to substantially two atmospheres. 19 The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the organic acid is lactic acid. 20 The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the organic acid is citric acid. 21 The apparatus of claim 13. wherein the organic acid is malic acid. 22 The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the organic acid is tartarjfc 23 The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the organic acid is glycolic acid. p - 19- The apparatus of claim 13. wherein the organic acid is mandelic acid. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the organic acid is oxalic acid. A process for treating and disinfecting water and/or wastewater according to any one of claims 1 to 12. 16 and 17 substantially as herein described with reference to the drawings.
