W AN IMPROVED, EAR. TAG
I, ANTHONY ALAN HENDERSON, of 121 Puriri Street, Christchurch, New Zealand, being a British subject and New Zealand citizen do hereby declare the invention for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement: E ^

This invention relates to an improved ear tag of the type usable for deer, cattle, goats and other such animals.
At present a variety of plastics ear tags are on the market and an example is the ear tag marketed by Allflex 5 (Registered Trade Mark) and described and claimed in New
Zealand Patent Specification No. 162710/164351. Such an ear tag is manufactured from a resilient plastics material and has a tab or disc region on which a stock number is printed for identification or records purposes. The information has 10 in the past been printed or stamped on the tab and although this system is satisfactory in a number of situations problems can arise as the tags frequently get muddied. In this condition the stock numbers cannot be read. At present farmers carry a cleaning rag to enable them to clean the tag so that it can be read.
An object of the present invention is to ameliorate the above disadvantage and to provide an ear tag which can be more easily read and is easier to clean.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will 20 become apparent from the following description which is given by way of example only.
According to the present invention there is provided an ear tag including a tab region which has a shaped hole(s) formed therein, the shaped hole(s) representing an 25 identification number, letter or combination thereof.
The shaped hole or holes can be cut or stamped from the tag region of the ear tag.

The surface of the tab region surrounding the shaped hole(s) is preferably highlighted with a border of a colour contrasting with that of the colour of the tab region.
Further aspects of this invention will become apparent from the following description which is given by way of example only.
An example of the invention will now be described with reference to the drawing accompanying the provisional specification which shows a perspective view of an improved ear tag according to the present invention.
The ear tag shown in the drawing is a modified ear tag of the type described and claimed in New Zealand Letters Patent No. 162710/164351. The ear tag is generally indicated by arrow 1 and has removed therefrom a series of shaped numbers which are in the form of shaped hole(-s) 2. The hole(s) 2 are formed during manufacture or are punched or cut into a tag region 3 of the ear tag. The borders of the holes
2 are preferably printed or formed of a contrasting colour so that the shape of the holes 2 thereon is highlighted.
In use the ear tags are used in the normal way and the highlighted numbers or letters formed therein are more easily seen from both close by and by binoculars from further afield. There is less accumulation of dirt on the tag- region
3 as it tends to pass through the hole(s) 2 rather than collect on the surface of the tag as has been the case in the past. If the holes become clogged they are easily cleaned as squeezing the resilient tag region 3 dislodges any dirt accumulated in the holes.
