Abstract

The present invention relates to the use of certain Basidiomycete fungi, in particular white rot fungi, such as Phlebia tremellosa, Trichaptum biforme, Schizophyllum commune and Phanerochaete gigantea, in preconditioning of wood or pulp to provide a more uniform and more efficient process resulting in a product of higher quality. Such treatment has also been found to increase the porosity of wood substrates, including particularly non-sterilized wood substrates. Such increases in porosity are accompanied by improved fluid penetration into the cells by the more porous wood or pulp in a subsequent chemical treatment process. Despite the fact that selected white rot fungi can deeply penetrate and leave voids where pitch and / or resin have been removed or the cell wall has been modified, such voids have been found to have substantially no effect on the lignin content of the pulp or the pulpwood. Nevertheless, the resulting fungus-treated pulp, when subsequently subjected to chemical treatment, exhibited increased brightness, increased yield and concomitant reduction in Kappa numbers, without significant reductions in viscosity. The invention also relates to a method of reducing the consumption of electrical energy during mechanical refining of wood or timber to pulp comprising inoculating at least one end of the wood or timber with a credibly effective amount of at least one fungus selected from the group mentioned above and allowing the fungus grow on and into the wood or timber for a time sufficient to reduce the stream in the wood or timber, and then to subject the wood thus treated or timber for mechanical refining.
