Abstract

In order to develop the process for separating, in particular, highly odorous, adhesive or resin-forming, condensable, organic vapours or gases from the exhaust air of chip dryers so that these condensable, adhesive or resin-forming, organic vapours or gases can also be collected without losing the cost-efficiency of the known processes, without adversely affecting the usefulness of the coarse fraction and without adversely affecting the usefulness of the fine fraction for internal heat supply, it is proposed to add a pulverulent adsorbent to the exhaust air of the chip dryer, from which air chips and coarse dust are removed in a conventional manner by means of an inertial force separator and fine dust is removed by means of a filter separator, the said adsorbent being added upstream of the filter separator and the said adsorbent being separated off in the downstream filter separator, together with the residual dust, the adsorbent being based on carbon and preferably being a lignite coke adsorbent; in an apparatus suitable for this purpose, a feed point for the adsorbent is arranged downstream of the inertial force separator (2) and upstream of the filter separator (13) in the pipeline (7) connecting the two and a mixing zone (9, 10, 12) is arranged downstream of the said feed point, the length of the mixing zone (9, 10, 12) being such that the residence time of the dryer exhaust air therein is at least one second. <IMAGE>
