Et koblingsstykke (VS) hvortil et tilsvarende stykke (VB) passer, kan tilkobles en kabel (K) med minst en leder (A) og et isolasjonslag (I). For overforing av informasjon mellom to apparater blir det f.eks. benyttet elektro- eller en lyslederkabel. For hver av disse to kabeltyper er det nødvendig med et tilsvarende koblingsstykke. For å utfare et koblingsstykke (VS) slik at det kan overføres såvel elektriske som optiske signaler, er det forsynt med minst en elektrisk og en optisk kontakt (L), for hvilke fortrinnsvis det samme tverrsnitt er valgt som for det av optisk ledende materiale utførte isolasjonslag (I) på kabelen (K). Koblingsstykket er egnet for en- eller flerlederkabel, koaksialkabel, flatkabel, nettkabel osv.
