Ved en fremgangsmåte for tilveiebringelse av et sonarbilde av et undervannsareal, blir det brukt en av et vannfartøy båret sonar som har en sendeantenne for utsending av lydimpulser og en mottaksantenne med en mottakssektor for mottak av fra undervannsarealet tilbakespredte lydbølger.
