Description
SPIRIT LEVEL DEVICE AND METHOD THEREFOR
The present invention relates to a spirit level device for looking at a bubble vial of a spirit level and a method for operating a spirit level.
From practice spirit levels are known for levelling for example profiles. In general, to level a profile, two workers are needed. A first worker needs to hold the spirit level against the profile that is to be levelled and looks at the bubble in the bubble vial of the spirit level to determine if the profile is levelled. A second worker at the same time adjusts the orientation of the profile based on the instructions from the first worker.
A known disadvantage of using a spirit level is that using the spirit level for levelling a profile cannot be done by a single person. In some instances, it is beneficial for workers to be able to level a profile on their own. As two workers are always needed, the construction costs of levelling profiles are relatively high.
It is an object for the present invention to obviate or at least reduce some of the abovementioned problems by providing a spirit level device. In particular, it is an object of the present invention to make it easier for a single worker to level a profile.
This object is achieved by a spirit level device for looking at a bubble vial of a spirit level, wherein the spirit level device comprises: - an attachment member for attaching the spirit level device to the spirit level; - areflective member that is rotatably attached to the attachment member, wherein the reflective member comprises a reflective surface for reflecting an image of the bubble vial, wherein the reflective member is rotatable around a first rotation axis that, when the spirit level device is attached to the spirit level, extends substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the bubble vial of the spirit level.
Due to the attachment member the spirit level device can be attached to the spirit level.
The attachment member preferably can be releasably attached to the spirit level. In this way the spirit level device can be attached to the spirit level whenever it is necessary. The attachment member can be attached to the spirit level at a position where the bubble vial of the spirit level is positioned.
The reflective member that comprises a reflective surface reflects an image of a bubble vial. The spirit level comprises a bubble vial wherein a bubble is enclosed, wherein from the position of the bubble a worker can read the extent of the spirit level being in a completely horizontal or vertical plane relative to a reference surface, e.g. the ground. Therefore, the worker needs to be able to see the bubble vial when levelling for example a profile. Due to the reflective surface the line of sight of the bubble vial can be redirected. When the spirit level is positioned against a surface of the profile that is opposite to the worker’s position, the line of sight of the bubble vial can be perpendicular to the line of sight of the worker. An advantage of the reflective surface is that the line of sight can be redirected towards the worker. In this way, only one worker is necessary to level the profile and read the spirit level.
The reflective member is rotatable around a first rotation axis that, when the spirit level device is attached to the spirit level, extends substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the bubble vial of the spirit level. Due to the reflective member being rotatable around a rotation axis, the line of sight of the bubble vial that is reflected with the reflective surface can also be rotated. An advantage thereof is that when the worker is for example positioned lower than the vertical height of the bubble vial, the reflective member can be rotated such that the line of sight is directed downwards towards the worker, In this way, the bubble vial of the spirit level can be easily read from any position of the worker.
The attachment member may be provided with an opening that is configured to be positioned on the position of the bubble vial from the spirit level, wherein the reflective surface is positioned near the opening. It is noted that the spirit level device can be used to reflect the bubble vial for vertical levelling and/or the bubble vial for horizontal levelling. Thus, the spirit level device can be used for levelling profiles that need to be vertical as well as structures that need to be horizontal.
In an embodiment according to the invention the attachment member comprises a U- shaped clamp, wherein the U-shaped clamp preferably comprises two parallel plate-formed legs such that the legs can be attached to an outside of the spirit level.
The U-shaped clamp comprises two parallel legs that extend, when attached to the spirit level, substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the spirit level. The distance between the legs of the U-shaped clamp are preferably adjusted to the width of the spirit level. This ensures a reliable attachment of the spirit level device to the spirit level.
In an embodiment according to the invention the distance between the legs of the U-shaped clamp is adjustable. In this way, the spirit level device can be attached to spirit levels with different widths. An advantage of the plate-formed parallel legs is that an even more reliable attachment from the spirit level device to the spirit level is obtained.
In an embodiment according to the invention the spirit level device further comprises a securing element for securing the spirit level to a profile that is to be levelled, wherein the securing element is connected to the attachment member.
Due to the securing element the spirit level can be attached to the profile that is to be levelled, thereby removing the need of two workers for levelling the profile. This reduces costs.
Another advantage of the spirit level being secured against the profile is that it safer, as the spirit level cannot fall down. Alternatively or additionally, it reduces the chance of breaking the spirit level, especially the bubble vials thereof, when falling down.
In an embodiment according to the invention the securing element comprises a secured state wherein the spirit level is placed against the profile, wherein in the secured state the spirit level is positioned between the attachment member of the spirit level device and the profile, and wherein a part of the securing element grips a first side of the profile that is opposite of a second side of the profile against which the spirit level is placed.
An advantage of the securing element gripping a side that is opposite of the side against which the spirit level is placed, is that, when levelling an upright profile, the spirit level can be placed against the profile and remains placed by its own weight, for example by hanging. This ensures that the there is no excessive force used for placing the spirit level against the profile, thereby preventing damage or deformation of the spirit level and/or the profile and/or displacement of the orientation of the profile.
In an embodiment according to the invention the securing member comprises at least one hole that is provided in the leg, wherein at least one securing screw is placed. In this way by tightening the at least one screw against the profile the spirit level device can be effectively secured to the profile.
In an embodiment according to the invention the securing element comprises a hook-like element, wherein the hook-like element is configured to be positioned on a first side of the profile.
The hook-like element provides an easy attachment of the securing element to the profile.
Preferably, the hook-like element grips a first side of the profile that is opposite of a second side of the profile against which the spirit level is placed.
In an embodiment according to the invention the securing element is pivotably connected to the attachment member.
Due to the securing element being pivotably connected to the attachment member, the spirit level device is pressed towards the profile in case the securing element grips an opposing side of the profile against which the attachment member and spirit level are placed. This ensures that the spirit level device is effectively secured against the profile by its own gravitational force.
In an embodiment according to the invention the attachment member comprises a supporting surface configured to support the securing element, and wherein the securing element is pivotably connected to the attachment member in line of the supporting surface.
The supporting surface ensures that in the secured state the securing element can rest against the attachment member. This increases the stability of the attachment of the spirit level against the profile.
In an embodiment according to the invention the attachment member further comprises an anti-slip element.
The anti-slip element is preferably positioned on the inside of the connecting part between the legs, such that it is positioned against the spirit level when the spirit level is positioned in the attachment member. The anti-slip element comprises a material with a high resistance, for example rubber or plastic, preferably plastic with a roughened surface.
In an embodiment according to the invention the securing element is detachable from the attachment member.
The securing element being detachable from the attachment member can for example be achieved by the securing member having an axis that can be provided in a hole of the attachment member, wherein the axis preferably is cylindrically-formed. An advantage of the securing element being detachable from is that storage of the spirit level device is easier, as the securing member is a protruding element. Another advantage is that it prevents the securing member from breaking when itis stored.
In an embodiment according to the invention a length of the securing element is adjustable.
To achieve an adjustable length of the securing element, the securing element may comprise at least two parts that are telescopically connected, wherein a first part can be inserted in/into a second part to adjust the length. An advantage of the length of the securing member being adjustable is that the securing member can be used for profiles that have different widths. This increases the instances that the spirit level device according to the invention can be used.
In an embodiment according to the invention the reflective surface is rotatable around a second rotation axis such that the reflective surface is collapsible between a working state and a storage state, wherein in the working state the reflective surface is configured to reflect an image and in the storage state the reflective surface is parallel with the attachment member.
Preferably in the storage state a plane of the reflective surface is substantially perpendicular to the first rotation axis and in the operating state the reflective surface makes an angle with the first rotation axis. An advantage of the storage state is that the chance of damage to the reflective surface is reduced. Alternatively or additionally, the chance of breaking of the part of the reflective member on which the reflective surface is provided is reduced.
In an embodiment according to the invention the reflective surface of the reflective member comprises a concave curvature for enlarging the image of the bubble vial.
An advantage of the concave curvature that enlarges the image of the bubble vial is that the bubble vial can be more easily read from a larger distance. This makes the levelling of the profile for the worker easier.
In an embodiment according to the invention an angle between the rotation axis and a plane of the reflective surface is in the range of 30° — 60°, preferably in the range of 40° — 50°, and most preferably is about 45°.
The abovementioned ranges ensure that the image of the bubble vial is effectively reflected towards the worker that is levelling the profile.
In an embodiment according to the invention the spirit level device further comprises a light source that is configured to illuminate the reflective surface.
An advantage of the light source is that the spirit level can also be read when it is dark outside. This increases the time that the spirit level device can be used. 5 The present invention further relates to an assembly comprising a spirit level and a spirit level device according to any one of the foregoing embodiments.

In an embodiment according to the invention the method further comprises: - placing the spirit level on a first side of a profile that is to be levelled; - attaching a part of the securing element to a second side of the profile, wherein the second side is opposite of the first side, thereby securing the spirit level to the profile.
The present invention further relates to the use of a spirit level device or an assembly according to any one of the foregoing embodiments.
The use has similar effects and advantages as disclosed for the spirit level device.
Further advantages, features and details are elucidated on the basis of preferred embodiments thereof, wherein reference is made to the accompanying drawings, wherein: - figure 1 shows a worker levelling a profile with the use of an example of a spirit level device according to the invention;
- figure 2 shows an example of a spirit level device according to the invention that is secured against a profile; - figures 3 and 4 show perspective views of an example of a spirit level device according to the invention; and - figure 5 shows the use of an example of a spirit level device according to the invention for levelling a horizontal beam.
Profile 2 (figure 1) is connected to support beam 4, which is positioned on ground 1 and is substantially horizontal. Worker 8 wants to level profile 2 by putting profile 2 substantially vertical in direction Y, such that longitudinal axis A of profile 2 is substantially perpendicular to ground 1.
IO Worker 8 can do this by using level beam 6. Level beam 6 is pivotably connected to profile 2 with level pivot connection 3. By changing position 5 of level beam 6 on support beam 4 in direction B, worker 8 is able to change an angle that longitudinal axis A of profile 2 makes with vertical direction Y.
Spirit level 10 is attached to profile 2 by means of spirit level device 12. Spirit level device 12 comprises attachment member 18 that in this illustrated embodiment is formed as a U-shaped clamp such that the legs of attachment member 18 can be slid over spirit level 10. Spirit level device 12 further comprises securing member 14 that secures spirit level 10 to profile 2. Securing member 14 is pivotably connected to attachment member 18 with securing member pivot connection 17. Securing member 14 comprises first part 15 that can be telescopically inserted into second part 16, such that the length of securing member 14 can be adjusted. Reflective member 20 is provided as a cover. Reflective member 20 is configured to redirect the image of a bubble vial of spirit level 10 towards worker 8.
As can be seen in figure 1, spirit level 10 is positioned opposite of profile 2 in relation to worker 8. In other words, profile 2 blocks the line of sight for worker 8 such that it is impossible for worker 8 to see if profile 2 is extending in vertical direction Y without the help of spirit level device 12.
Reflective member 20 (figure 2) is provided with reflective surface 22, which can be a mirror or any other surface that reflects light. Reflective sarface 22 reflects image 23 of the bubble vial 25 of spirit level 10 towards worker 8. In this way worker 9 is able to see from reflective surface 22 if bubble 26 is positioned in the middle of bubble vial, and therefore read if profile 2 is extending in vertical direction Y seen in the plane of the longitudinal direction of support beam 4.
Second part 16 of securing member 14 is provided with hook-like element 24 (see figure 2). Hook- like element 24 is provided on surface 2a of profile 2 that is opposite of surface 2b against which spirit level 10 is positioned. Due to hook-like element 24 being provided against surface 2a of profile 2 securing member 14 pivots over securing member pivot connection 17 until securing member 14 is stopped and held in position by supporting surface 28 that is provided on attachment member 18. This ensures that spirit level 10 is effectively secured against profile 2.
Spirit level device 12 (figures 2 and 3) comprises attachment member 18 provided with parallel legs 18a, 18b. Legs 18a, 18b are configured to be slid or provided against opposing side walls of spirit level 10, such that middle wall 35 abuts a side wall disposed between the opposing walls of spirit level 10. Middle wall 35 is provided with anti-slip parts 36a, 36b. Middle wall further comprises opening 42 wherein securing member 24 can be attached. Legs 18a, 18b are each respectively provided with circular openings 30a, 30b. Spirit level device 12 should be attached to spirit level 10 such that openings 30a, 30b are positioned around the position of bubble vial 25 of
IO spirit level 10.
Reflective member 21 comprises cover 20 that is pivotably connected to ring 32 due to reflective member pivot connection 34. Cover 20 can be pivoted over second rotation axis C. This ensures that cover 20 can be closed to protect reflective surface 22, and that cover 20 can be opened to reflect bubble vial 25. As ring 32 is rotatably provided in opening 30b of leg 18b, 15 reflective member 21 can be rotated around first rotation axis D. This ensures that reflective surface 22 can be rotated towards any height of the eyes of worker 8, and thus that worker 8 can see bubble vial 25. Further provided in attachment member 18 is recess 40 for looking at a horizontal bubble vial. Protrusions 38 are provided on ring 32 for gripping and rotating reflective member 21. 20 Spirit level device 12 (figure 5) can also be used in the levelling of a horizontal structure, which in this example is a horizontal beam 50. Horizontal beam 50 is elevated by pillars 51, 52, and the horizontal orientation of horizontal beam 50 can be changed by changing the vertical height of pillars 51, 52. Placed on top surface 50a of horizontal beam 50 is spirit level 10. Attached on the position of horizontal bubble vial 54 of spirit level 10 is spirit level device 12. Spirit level 10 25 further comprises vertical bubble vial 56. Securing member 14 grips bottom surface 50b with hook-like element 24 such that spirit level device 12 and spirit level 10 are secured against horizontal beam 50. The image of horizontal bubble vial 54 is reflected with reflective member 20 to line of sight 9. Worker 8 can easily look along line of sight 9 to see if horizontal beam 50 is horizontal when worker 8 is changing the vertical height of pillars 51, 52. 30 In an embodiment according to the invention worker § slides legs 18a, 18b of attachment member 18 over spirit level 10. Then worker 8 positions spirit level 10 against profile 2, while positioning hook-like element 24 of securing member 14 on the opposite site on which spirit level is positioned. Securing member pivot connection 17 is positioned closest to the ground. In this way, spirit level device 12 pushes spirit level 10 against profile 2 and therewith secures spirit level 10 against profile 2. Cover 20 of reflective member 21 is pivoted around second rotation axis C such that the plane of cover 20 makes an angle of 45° with first rotation axis D. Then reflective member 21 is rotated around first rotation axis D such that reflective surface 22 is directed towards the eyes of worker 8. Subsequently, worker 8 can effectively level profile 2 by changing the position of level beam 6 while at the same time reading the image of bubble vial 25 on reflective surface 22. This ensures that a worker can level profile 10 without the need of another worker holding spirit level 10 against profile 2 and telling worker 8 when the profile 2 is levelled.
