Abstract
A one-piece shipping tray convertible to a display configuration made from a Plano provided with fold lines for folding the blank into a ready to use shipping tray comprising a bottom wall, upstanding sidewalls, a backplane and a front plane, and which shipping tray is equipped to receive a cover so as to complete same as a shipping packaging, wherein the shipping tray is equipped with inner tabs protruding inwardly from the bottom wall and/or from the upstanding sidewalls by folding the Plano along said fold lines.
Description
A one-piece shipping tray convertible to a display configuration
The invention relates to a one-piece shipping tray convertible to a display configuration made from a Plano provided with fold lines for folding the Plano into a ready to use shipping tray comprising a bottom wall, upstanding side-walls, a backplane and a front plane, and which shipping tray is equipped to receive a cover so as to complete same as a shipping packaging.
Such a one-piece shipping tray is well-established art. US 3,360,117 published December 26, 1967 already discloses a one-piece carton assembly for the display packaging of articles having front, back, side and end panels in which the front panel wall construction is formed with an article display opening intermediate the ends of said panel and provided with wall portions angled inwardly from the side and end edges of the opening, the said angled portions of the end edges being apertured to provide openings for receiving opposite ends of an article.
Quite recently US 8,752,708 issued on June 17, 2014 disclosed a shipping container convertible to a display configuration with a removable cover base removable along perforated lines of weakness to form a display opening. Packages of product in the carton are supported in a horizontal orientation during shipping and in an upright orientation when the removable cover base is removed for display of the products at a point-of-sale.
It is one of the objects of the invention to improve the design of US 8,752,708 and make it better suitable for a display of products that are by nature not stably position-able .
It is another object of the invention to provide such a shipping tray which merely requires the removal of the cover after its placement near or at a point-of-sale therewith rendering the tray immediately ready for use as a display.
Another object is that the products that are displayed in the tray are easily displaceable so as to optimize the presentation to the customer.
These and other objects of the invention are provided with a one-piece shipping tray having the features of one or more of the appended claims.
In a first aspect of the invention the shipping tray is equipped with at least one inner tab protruding inwardly from the bottom wall and/or from the upstanding sidewalls by arranging that the Plano is folded along said fold lines. The inner tab or tabs serve several purposes, notably they provide sturdiness to the shipping tray and they provide support means for the products that are displayed in the tray.
The sturdiness of the tray and the quality of the support provided by the tab or tabs is promoted by arranging that predefined parts of the original material sheet of the Plano are lying back-to-back against each other. The tabs can be either single-sided or double-sided.
Manufacturing the tray of the invention preferably includes the step that the back-to-back lying parts of the material sheet are at least in part glued together. In this way the tray can be easily converted from a Plano to the ready to use tray, whereas the gluing also serves to provide longevity to the tray capable to withstand the forces that occur during transport and yet offer an attractive appearance when the tray is converted from the transport mode to the display mode.
It is possible to manufacture the tray of the invention from an assortment of materials including plastics. It is preferred however that the Plano is a carton. Carton is abundantly available and has a relatively low impact on the environment. Preferably further the carton is a corrugated carton which in general promotes the sturdiness of the tray.
The invention will hereinafter be further elucidated with reference to the drawing of an exemplary embodiment of manufacturing in a series of steps a one-piece shipping tray that is convertible to a display configuration according to the invention, and that is not limiting as to the appended claims .
The drawing shows in figure 1 an original Plano provided with fold lines, which in the subsequent figure 2 is beginning to be folded along the fold lines that delimit what in the ready to use product will constitute the tabs of the tray of the invention.
In figure 3 a step is shown in which predefined parts of the original material sheet of the Plano that are lying back-to-back against each other are at least partly glued together to form the tabs that are in figure 3 standing upwards, therewith protruding from the flat plane in which the remainder of the Plano is lying.
In the subsequent figures 4, 5 and 6 the Plano is further folded along the other fold lines to complete the tray into its ready for use form as shown in figure 6.
According to its manner of manufacturing it is clear that the shipping tray as shown in figure 6 is equipped with inner tabs protruding inwardly from the bottom wall and in this case also from the upstanding sidewalls. It is not essential that both the bottom wall and the upstanding side-walls are provided with such tabs; it is however preferred that at least one of the group comprising the sidewalls and the bottom wall is provided with such tabs. As mentioned each of the tabs is single sided or double-sided wherein predefined parts of the original material sheet of the Plano are lying back-to-back against each other, wherein the back-to-back lying parts of the material sheet are at least in part glued together. In this example the Plano is a carton, more specifically a corrugated carton.
Although the invention has been discussed in the foregoing with reference to an exemplary embodiment of the one-piece shipping tray convertible to a display configuration according to the invention, the invention is not restricted to this particular embodiment which can be varied in many ways without departing from the gist of the invention. The discussed exemplary embodiment shall therefore not be used to construe the appended claims strictly in accordance therewith. On the contrary the discussed embodiment is merely intended to explain the wording of the appended claims without intent to limit the claims to this exemplary embodiment. The scope of protection of the invention shall therefore be construed in accordance with the appended claims only, wherein a possible ambiguity in the wording of the claims shall be resolved using this exemplary embodiment.
