Abstract

Protective clothing having a jacket with collar of double-walled construction (5, 6) enclosing three compartments (7, 8, 9). Two compartments (7, 8) extend generally across the front of the jacket and the third (9) extends over and along the back of the wearer to protect the spinal column (10). The neck of the wearer is protected by a collar of similar double-walled construction. In the event of an accident, a cartridge is activated which releases a pressurised medium which inflates the cavities (7, 8, 9) and those in the collar and elsewhere in the garment to protect the wearer on impact. Pref. the inflated collar extends over the back and up each side of the head. Similar inflatable compartments can also be provided in the trousers. Inflation of the compartments by the cartridge can also be activated remotely by transmission of a signal from a sensor attached to the motorcycle which indicates that the rider is no longer mounted on the motorcycle when travelling in excess of a particular speed.
