Abstract

Provided is a method for producing tetrahydrofuran 5 in a high reaction yield from erythritol or 3, 4- dihydroxytetrahydrofuran. Erythritol is available as or from biomass, and 3, 4-dihydroxytetrahydrofuran is easily derivable from erythritol. The method for producing tetrahydrofuran according to the present invention includes the step of reacting 3, 4- dihydroxytetrahydrofuran and hydrogen with each other in the presence of a catalyst to form tetrahydrofuran. The catalyst includes a cerium oxide, and rhenium supported on the cerium oxide.
