Description
APPARATUS FOR RECYCLING OIL FILTER BASKETS DESCRIPTION This invention relates to an apparatus for recycling oil filter baskets, specifically, with an automated apparatus. Cars and trucks want a new engine oil filter approximately every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. With the millions of cars and trucks on the nation's roads, this amounts to annual amounts of many millions of old oil filters, which must be discarded. These oil filters are made of metal, which has a significant value if it is recycled. The paper inserts in the oil filter baskets also have recycling value. The oil - used trapped in the basket can also be recycled. Although the need to recycle oil filter baskets is known, the process of recycling the baskets is intense and dirty work. The basket should be opened by cutting, the used oil drained and the inserted paper removed. To store and transport the basket and the insert efficiently, both must be compacted. Then, the basket, oil, and paper should be separated into respective containers for storage and transportation. Because the baskets and inserts are processed by different recyclers, the baskets must be kept free of waste from the inserts and vice versa. The baskets are difficult to open by cutting manually, due to their cylindrical shape and thin walls, which makes use of a tool such as a difficult and dangerous metal saw. The basket can be inadvertently compressed during cutting, making it difficult or impossible to remove the paper insert. The basket, which is covered with oil and is slippery, can roll during the cutting process, causing the operator's hand to be cut by the slip, resulting in physical injury to the operator. There is a need for an automated device to recycle oil filter baskets. The appliance must be capable of cutting open the basket quickly, so that the oil and the paper insert are removed. Then the apparatus must compact the basket and the paper insert, while keeping them separated from each other. The baskets and compacted inserts must be transported automatically to the storage tanks. The used oil trapped inside the filter must be drained and pumped into storage tanks. The apparatus must be capable of processing several hundred baskets per hour, under the control of human operators.
An apparatus for recycling oil filter baskets, comprising a machine that cuts the basket, a table for draining the oil, an oil storage tank and the pump, a basket crusher, a
crusher of the paper insert and conveyors to transport the crushed paper baskets and paper inserts to their respective storage tanks. The machine for cutting the basket comprises a plate
"Swivel to hold the baskets and a head assembly
cut to cut the end plates of the baskets. An object and advantage of the invention is that the cutting machine allows many human operators to work together. Another object and advantage of the invention is that the baskets are opened by cutting rapidly without being compressed, thus allowing the elimination of the paper inserts. Another object and advantage of the invention is that the
The cutting machine safely holds the baskets while they are being cut, greatly reducing the risk of physical injury to the operators. Another object and advantage of the invention, is that the oil used trapped in the baskets can be
collected, stored and recycled with little human effort.
Another object and advantage of the invention, is that it provides separate shredders for the baskets and the paper inserts, thus providing the simultaneous processing of the baskets and inserts and keeping the respective recyclable materials free from each other. Another object and advantage of the invention is that it provides separate conveyors for transporting the baskets and the shredded paper inserts to the storage tanks. The clamping plate 50 further comprises a clamping air cylinder 90 and a rod or ram 92 positioned behind the central core 73 of the body. of plate 72, a bearing assembly 94 connected to piston 92, and a piston, piston or actuator 96 connected to bearing assembly 94 and clamping arm 84 and slidably engaged within center hole 73. Plunger 96 causes clamping arms 84 alternating radially within the radial channels 82, translate the axial movement of the piston 90 to the radial movement of the clamping arms 84, as described in the following. The plunger 96 has a clamping arm with a separate cut 98 with an outer wall 100, the rear wall 102, and a horizontal wall 104. A reservoir 106 is mounted on the outer wall 100 substantially perpendicular thereto and transversely with the central core 73 The inner end 108 of the clamping arm 84 is cam-shaped and slidably engages the horizontal wall 104 of the cut 98 as the cut 98 moves axially back and forth within the core 73. The clamping arm 84 it has a slot 110 positioned at a slightly vertical angle, substantially parallel to the inner end 108 of the fastening arm 84. The reservoir 106 is slidably engaged within the slot 110. The plunger 96 also has a finger cut 112, which allows the 76 finger moves back without interference. The cutting head assemblies 60 are mounted on the case 44 above the plates 50. FIGURE 11 shows the detail of the cutting head assembly. The cutting head assembly 60 comprises a housing 120 slidably mounted on a guide rail 122, which in turn is mounted on a back plate 124. A cutting clamp 126 mounted on the lower end 127 of the housing 120 maintains a cutting blade 128, which in the preferred embodiment is a section of a cobalt band saw blade. A detector means 129 is also provided to detect when the oil filter basket 10 has been cut off, as follows. An L-shaped return actuator arm 130 is slidably mounted within the housing 120 and biased downward to the oil filter basket 10, rotatable by a spring 132. The lower end 134 of the return actuator arm 130 comprises a button 136. of wear aligned with the cutting blade 128, such that the blade 128 and the wear button 136 simultaneously contact the rotating filter basket 10. The upper end 138 of the return actuator presses against a roller 140, deflected by the spring 132. The roller 140 activates an air switch 142 for controlling an air cylinder as will be described in the following. As can be seen in FIGURE 4, the cutting head assembly 60 also comprises means 152 for moving the cutting blade against the oil filter basket., rotating, which comprises an air cylinder 152 with a piston 154 connected to the housing 120 to move the housing up and down with respect to the rotating filter basket 10. A regulator 156 controls the force with which the cutting blade 128 comes into contact with the rotating filter basket 10, thereby preventing the basket 10 from being compressed. An air synchronizer 158 is controlled by the air switch 142 to retard the cutting blade 128 of the retraction from the rotating filter basket 10 after the basket 10 is cut. The cutting machine also comprises a control means. 64 for coordinating the action of the holding plates 50, the motor 52 and the cutting head assemblies 60. The control means further comprises a cycle ignition button 160 for causing the holding plate 50 to hold onto the basket 10. of oil filter, a reset button 162 to cause the cutting head assembly 60 to be placed against the oil filter basket 10 and the appropriate compressed air source 164, the air valves 166, the pipe 168 and the 169 controls to drive and coordinate the cutting machinery. Now the operation of the cutting machine will be described. The machine will first be connected to an adequate supply of compressed air 164 and to a supply of electric current to activate the electric motor 52. As the electric motor 52 rotates, the motor 52 will drive the driving gear 67 via the shaft 66. The drive gear in turn will operate two of the plates 50a and 50b. The central plate 50b will activate the idle gear 68, and the idle gear 68 will activate the third plate 50c. After the plates 50 have been rotated at the proper speed, approximately 100 rpm, the operator will hold an oil filter basket 10 in one hand and press the basket 10 against the brand fingers 76, as seen in FIGURE 8. The tips 77 of the fingers 76 will mark the hole 16 in the end plate 14 of the basket 10, so that it centers the basket 10 on the plate 50. As the operator increases the pressure against the fingers 76 , the fingers 76 will pivot inwardly of the central ring 75, deflected by the springs 80, in such a way that the base plate 14 can be pressed strongly against the front surface 74 of the plate body 72. With his other hand, the operator press the cycle start button 160. Pressing the button 160 causes the air cylinder fastener 90 to be activated, causing the ram 92 through the bearing assembly 94 to move the plunger 96 forward, towards the filter basket 10 to rotating ceite. See FIGURE 10. As the plunger 96 moves forward, the bolt 106 slides along the slot 110 in the clamping arm 84, causing the clamping arm 84 to be pulled inward toward the central core 73. of the plate body 72 along the radial channels 82. Simultaneously, the inner end 108 of the clamping arm 84, will slide along the horizontal wall 104 of the plunger clamping arm with the separate cut 98. The clamping arms 84 in this way they will move inward until the clamping plates 88 make contact with the oil filter basket 10. The rough surfaces 89 of the holding plates 88 will hold and retain the basket 10, causing the basket 10 to rotate with the plate 50. The cuts of the finger 112 will prevent the plunger 96 from contacting the fingers 76. FIGURE 12 shows the cutting operation. As soon as the grasping arms 84 have secured to the basket 10, the cutting air cylinder 152 will be activated, causing the ram 154, controlled by the regulator 156, to force the cutting blade 128 and the wear button 136 against the filter basket 10. The cutting blade 128 then cuts the basket 10, making a concentric cut as the basket 10 rotates. The detector means 129 is then activated as follows. As soon as the blade 128 falls in the cut in the basket 10, the wear button 136 will be pressed upwardly by the basket 10, causing the return of the actuator arm 130 to move vertically upwards against the spring 132 and the roller 140. The roller 140 will cause the air switch 142 to close, turning on the air synchronizer 158. The synchronizer 158 will count enough of a delay time to allow the cutting blade 128 to complete an additional revolution around the rack 10. The synchronizer 158 then instructs the air cylinder 152 to retract the ram 154, thus retracting the blade 128 away from the rack 10. The air cylinder fastener 90 then causes its ram 92 to retract, causing the plunger 96 to move toward back separating it from the basket 10. As the plunger 96 moves backward, the bolt 106 will slide along the slot 110, causing the clamping arm 84 moves outwardly away from the central core 73 along the radial channel 82, thereby releasing the filter basket 10. Both of the basket 10 and its cut end plate 14 then fall free of the plate 50. The operator then removes the oil and the paper insert 18 from the cut of the basket 10. The oil is drained along the inclined upper part 42 of the table 40 of the cutting machine and on the table 24 of oil drainage adjacent. The oil drain table 24 has a central drain 25 which leads to an oil storage tank 26. The remaining parts of the invention are the basket shredder 28, the paper insert shredder 30, the conveyors 32 and 34 and the storage tanks 35.
The can crusher 28 can be seen in FIGURE 13. The can crusher 28 comprises a hopper 170 that shreds the basket within which the operator places the cut of the filter baskets 10 for oil to be crushed. The operator then operates a basket crushing control means (not shown) such as a switch, causing the basket crushing plate 172 to be brought against the oil filter basket 10 by a basket crushing ram 174. The basket crushing plate 172 is prevented from moving from side to side by a guide bar 176. As the basket is being crushed, the basket oil is drained out of the basket crusher hopper 170 through of a slot (not shown) and inside a receiving tank (not shown). After the basket 10 of the oil filter has been crushed, the operator causes the ram 174 to crush the basket and the plate 172 to retract, such that the crushed basket can be removed from the hopper that crushes the basket. The operator then places the crushed basket on the conveyor 32 of the basket for transport to a storage tank 35. The can crusher 28 can be seen in FIGURE 13. The can crusher 28 comprises a hopper 180 that shreds the basket within which the operator places the cut of the paper filter inserts 18 for oil to be crushed. The operator then operates a shredder control means of the paper insert (not shown) such as a switch, causing the shredding plate 182 of the paper insert to be brought against the paper filter insert 18 for oil by a shredding ram. 184 of paper insert. The paper insert crushing plate 182 is prevented from moving from side to side by a guide bar 186. As the paper insert is being crushed, the oil from the paper insert is drained out of the hopper 180 of the paper insert. crushing of paper insert through a slot (not shown) and into a receiving tank (not shown). After the paper insert of the oil filter has been crushed, the operator causes the ram 184 which shreds the paper insert and the plate 182 to retract, such that the shredded paper insert can be removed from the hopper which shreds the paper insert. The operator then places the shredded paper insert on the conveyor 34 of the paper insert for transport to a storage bin 35. The present invention may be contemplated in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and it is therefore desired that the present embodiment be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being made to the appended claims in place of the above description to indicate the scope of the invention.
