The optional credential is expected to launch before the end of 2026. It will work offline and allow residents to carry and present their licence on a smartphone while retaining the option to use a physical card. Australia’s jurisdictions are also converging on ISO/IEC standards, with Austroads working toward nationwide interoperability through its Digital Trust Service. First up, 3 days in the ISO SC 17 WG 10 meeting, discussing ISO 18013/23220 at the start of the week, where a lot of progress was made on changes that are pending on several of the new editions of the standards, looking forward to sharing these new features with our customers soon. Then onto another great international interoperability event organised by Arjan Geluk and A4Advisory, giving an opportunity to test out a sandbox version of the new Govt.NZ Sandbox wallet from GDDA. Thanks to Steve Cowper and the team for the collaboration on getting the Kiwi Access Card from Hospitality New Zealand ready to test for the event! Rounded out by a two day summit on Digital ID held by Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA) and The World Bank Group. A great event showcasing all the progress we've made in the region and beyond with digital credentials. Thanks to the great hospitality from ETDA and World bank for organising the event! They just announced they are live as part of a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) webinar on the next phase of the excellent NIST National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) mDL project. They also announced plans to start accepting the "derived passport" digital credentials that Apple, Google, and Samsung wallets let you create based on the digitally signed smart card chip in US passports early next year. This is an amazing new set of options for Americans to prove who they are to get government benefits services - in a way that is more secure, better for privacy, and easier to use! A full copy of my driver licence. Held by a tattoo studio. Forever. So I asked what they actually needed. ➖Confirmation I'm me ➖ Confirmation I'm over 18 ➖ No requirement to keep a copy on file Instead of handing over a JPEG of my licence (name, address, licence number: basically a starter kit for identity theft), I presented my mobile driver licence (mDL) from my phone. The owner verified it on her own device, on the spot. What she received: ✅ First and last name ✅ Over 18: yes ✅ Credential valid: yes What she didn't: ❌ My address ❌ My licence number ❌ A photo of me looking like I'd just woken up ❌ Anything stored on her device Her reaction landed somewhere between "wait, that's it?" and genuine relief at not being a de facto data custodian for every client who wants a rose on their ankle. This is selective disclosure and data minimisation outside a policy paper. A small business gets exactly what it needs to meet its obligation, and nothing it then has to protect. mDL isn't coming. It's here, it's working, and it's turning up in places you'd never expect. Proud of the MATTR team for helping make it real. Real mDL. Real verification. Real-world use. Tobias Looker reacted on thisTobias Looker reacted on thisWestpac is now the first New Zealand bank accredited to issue digital credentials under the Government’s Digital Identity Services Trust Framework. In simple terms, it's a new way for people to prove something about themselves or their business digitally, without having to email documents, share screenshots, or hand over unnecessary personal information. The customer stays in control of what they share but it’s backed by a digital verification that we issue, reducing their fraud and scam risk. For our business customers, that means being able to provide trusted proof of their bank account details through a secure digital credential rather than downloading statements and manually redacting information. Eventually, Digital ID could see organisations issuing credentials for people to prove who they are – for proving their age or making applications, for example – without needing to show their passport or a physical form of ID. As Westpac’s Russell Jones says: “Imagine the convenience of having a digital version of your driver’s licence, Kiwi Access Card or passport in your phone. Everything from proving your age to setting up utilities to travelling overseas could be simplified without compromising on security.” This is a significant milestone, not just for Westpac but for New Zealand's digital future. Being first matters because every new ecosystem needs someone to get the ball rolling. We wanted to help turn the promise of digital identity into something real and practical for customers today. But success won't come from one organisation acting alone. The real value of digital ID will emerge when banks, telcos, government agencies, financial service providers and other industries all participate. That's when customers will experience the full benefits of a trusted, secure and seamless way to prove who they are online. This aligns with Westpac's view that digital ID will only succeed with broad support across New Zealand's ecosystem. Tobias Looker reacted on thisTobias Looker reacted on thisPhewww… after four years, my journey at MATTR has come to an end. Four years full of memories, laughs, challenges, learning and growth. When I first joined MATTR, I knew almost nothing about digital identity. Somehow, four years later, I’ve had the opportunity to work across so many different things, from launching a new website and building out our brand design system, to creating high-end pitch decks and finding ways to visualise complex technology through infographics and experiences that made it easier for people to understand what we do. But looking back, the work was only part of the story. It was the people who made MATTR so special to me. Somewhere along the way, colleagues became friends, and those friendships became one of the biggest reasons I grew so attached to this place. Over these four years, I learnt, questioned, challenged myself, succeeded, failed, and grew — both as a designer and as a person. It’s emotional to say goodbye because MATTR was never just a company I worked for. It was the people, the moments, and all the experiences we shared that brought this chapter to life. I don’t know exactly what the next chapter looks like yet, but I’m excited to find out, and to see where the journey takes me next. Thank you to everyone who has been part of these four years. I’ll miss you all more than I can probably put into words. ❤️ Thank you, MATTR. What a journey. Here’s to the next chapter. 💚

Last year, we arrived at Inductive Automation's ICC as a small startup from New Zealand with a simple belief: context is everything. We walked away with strong validation, which was backed up 5 months later at ProveIt! Conference This year, we're back to challenge an assumption. Almost everyone now agrees industrial AI needs context. But have we got the economics backwards? For years the playbook has been: Buy the platform → model the ontology → build the context → then look for value. We've met customers frustrated by exactly this — waiting months for results, spending real money, with minimal outcomes to show for it. Not because the technology failed, but because the sequence was backwards. What if operational value is the thing that creates context — not the other way around? We think the next decade won't be won by the biggest platform — it'll be won by the fastest path from problem to outcome. The real edge isn't the biggest knowledge graph. It's finding the "minimum viable context" that creates value today, while letting context grow with every success. That's easy to say and hard to do — the barrier usually isn't just technical, it's organizational trust in value you haven't built a system to prove yet. More on that at ICC. At TrendAI, we build automation for Australian operators — and this month we replaced the platform underneath it. We left an all-in-one because its cost could not be calculated before quoting a client. The replacement runs at about A$33 per client per month, and every figure in that number has a named source. It is not one product. It is a composed stack: Chatwoot for the inbox, Twenty for the pipeline, Cal.com for booking, Astro on Cloudflare Pages for the site, n8n for automation, Brevo for email, a phone gateway for SMS. The method that got us there is the part worth sharing. 1. List the capabilities, without naming a vendor. 2. Only then ask who provides each one — self-host, then free service, then paid service. Do it the other way round and the vendor's feature list quietly becomes your requirements list. Ours had: we were still carrying "Google Business Profile chat" as a channel to wire. It has not existed since July 2024. The decision itself landed in two hours. Three of the six build slices behind it shipped the same week — ending with a real enquiry on a public site becoming a card in a CRM that did not exist on Monday. I’m speaking at LiveHaus' TechHaus Melbourne on 1 October, joining a panel around a deceptively important question: "Who’s watching the AI? Testing, monitoring - and trust". A bad answer from a chatbot is one thing. A robot sharing a footpath, workplace or home with people... well, that's another thing altogether. At SpatioTemporal, Matt and I have been working on one part of that problem. We call it Motion Intelligence. Giving machines the ability to interpret movement as intent, to anticipate what people may do next, just like we humans do. Perception tells a machine what's there. Planning tells it what to do. Motion Intelligence firmly in the middle, to help robots read the room. But there’s another question I’ve become increasingly interested in: How do we know when a robot is actually ready to share our world? AI models have benchmarks. Cars have test tracks. What do robots need? As Physical AI moves into hospitals, hotels, shops, workplaces, footpaths and homes, I suspect we’re going to need something equivalent for robots. Not just whether they can complete a task, but whether they can do it capably, competently and appropriately around people. Semi-controlled chaos, in a safe test range, against real-world benchmarks.
