Congratulations PAL-V on being granted European Production Organisation Approval. This means that they now hold regulatory clearance required to manufacture both the automative and aviation components of their FlyDrive vehicles at industrial scale. This represents a decisive step toward bringing a certified flying car to the market. Notably, PAL-V is the first company in the FlyDrive segment of Advancement Air Mobility to reach this milestone, positioning it ahead of comparable initiatives in the United States and China. Verascient, a South African artificial intelligence startup, has raised $1.2 million (R19.5 million) in an oversubscribed funding round to expand its enterprise AI platform. The company helps organisations consolidate fragmented institutional knowledge stored across emails, spreadsheets, meeting notes and legacy systems. It develops customised workflows and AI agents that operate within clients’ daily operations, initially targeting financial services, insurance and logistics. Verascient’s technology uses a temporal knowledge graph to map changing organisational information while maintaining data provenance, existing access controls and historical context. Its AI engineers work alongside client teams to deploy solutions aimed at improving revenue, operations and customer experience. The round was backed by Founder Collective, Andrena Ventures, Cambridge Enterprise, Summit Ventures, and angel investors Alan Knott-Craig and Shayne Mann. The company was founded by Emile Ferreira (𝘱𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘭𝘦𝘧𝘵), CTO, a former early developer at Replit, and Keagan Stokoe (𝘱𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵), CEO, a founding team member of Fibertime and former founder of AI consultancy Purple Dorm. Ferreira holds an MPhil in Advanced Computer Science from Cambridge and previously developed an on-device AI assistant while in high school. You know what the hardest thing about having an international team is? The distance. And you know what they say about distance? It makes the heart grow fonder. So at the end of January, we flew the entire team to Cape Town 🇿🇦 1 house, 9 people, and big main character energy. The highlight of the trip was spending the weekend with our earliest backers, Gerrie Fourie and Wim de Bruyn. We got the raw, authentic stories behind building one of the most valuable banks in Africa, Capitec, and unpacked what it takes to scale globally. They made sure we took a long, honest look in the mirror and raised our own bar. This is much bigger than we first anticipated… We challenged everything under the sun and around the braai: What we’re building, How we’re building it and most importantly, who we’re building for. And now that we figured it out, allow us to reintroduce ourselves: Imagine an investment bank, and an angel syndicate had a baby…that’d be us. Summit is an AI-native investment bank . Taking top honours at the 2025 Founders vs Investors Padel Olympics in Cape Town was a highlight of an already packed week. The final went to the wire, the photo finish was real, and the energy felt like the 40 founders and investors brought their full playbooks onto the court. The best investors think like founders, and the best founders think like investors. Apparently, many also dive for impossible shots. Thank you to my good friend and team mate in the final Mike Mompi, Managing Partner at Enza. The founders had us working for every point throughout the knock out stages. Cape Town had the whole ecosystem in town. SuperReturn Africa, Africa Early Stage Investor Summit, AfricArena Grand Summit and endless side conversations filled the days. In between, stepping onto the court with friends and colleagues reminded me why this community works. The founders brought intensity. The investors brought angles. Everyone brought competitive banter. Big thanks to Summit.Deals for hosting and to No Strings® for setting the standard for premium padel gear. Competition aside, the camaraderie was the real win.
