US peak is a few weeks out, and most DCs are about to onboard a wave of seasonal pickers they'll have for eight to ten weeks. Every hour spent training them is an hour they aren't picking. At Honda Logicom distribution center, getting a temp up to speed on manual picking took close to a full day. On Rapyuta PA-AMR, it takes about 30 minutes. Brand-new hires are working on their own within an hour. Their peak runs six months on day-hire temps, many available only a day or two a week. At that turnover, a full day of training per person adds up fast. Half an hour makes that labor pool workable. Every DC has a version of this SKU. It moved three units a week through August, so nobody thought hard about where it got put away. Then it goes in the flyer and does three hundred the day the promotion runs. A SKU that was stored like a slow mover is now sitting under a stack of bins that have to be moved before anyone can touch it, and you pay that penalty on every line for that item, during the weeks you have the least slack to absorb it. Seasonal hiring does not touch this problem. More pickers move more volume. They do not make a storage system quicker at reaching something it buried because the item used to be slow. Rapyuta ASRS robots travel to a bin and lift it without disturbing anything stacked above or around it. Retrieval time is the same whether a SKU did three units last month or three hundred yesterday.
