R2S2R: Let’s talk about it. Fei-Fei Li says exactly what we at ALLSIDES have been saying for months: Quote: “This gap between a compelling demo and reliable operation is a major barrier to putting robotic systems to work at scale. Preparing robots for the real world requires extensive #data collection and repeated testing on physical hardware. Each new task or environment can demand substantial manual effort, while failures are slow to identify and costly to recover from. Closing this gap requires more than better policy learning algorithms. We must develop a scalable, #data-driven way to create the experience robots need for training and evaluation before and after they enter the field.” What Burkhard Güssefeld and I are thinking: Synthetic data will get us half the way to a solution, but to ultimately close the S2R gap you first need millions of measured, physically grounded 3Ds, in millions of scenarios and simulations. 🔬 Research is a core part of how we build technology at ALLSIDES, and our PhD internship program brings new research perspectives directly into our engineering teams.   This summer, Mustafa Berk Yaldiz (PhD in Computer Science & Engineering at UC San Diego), Nafie El Amrani (PhD in Computer Science at the The University of Bonn, and Giancarlo S.
