Staking

Crypto staking is the process of committing cryptocurrency to a blockchain network in return for rewards, normally paid in the staked cryptocurrency. Staking is primarily associated with proof-of-stake networks, where staked assets help support transaction validation and network security.

Depending on the cryptocurrency and staking method, staked assets may be available for withdrawal immediately, locked for a predetermined period, or subject to an unstaking period that can last from hours to weeks. During this period, the cryptocurrency may be unavailable for transfer or sale.

Commonly Staked Cryptocurrencies

  • Ethereum (ETH)
  • Solana (SOL)
  • BNB (BNB)
  • Cardano (ADA)
  • Tezos (XTZ)
  • Polkadot (DOT)

Staking Rewards

Staking rewards are commonly expressed as an annual percentage rate (APR) or annual percentage yield (APY). Rates vary by cryptocurrency, network conditions, validator or platform fees, and the method used to stake. Higher advertised returns can also involve greater risk.

Cryptocurrency can be staked directly on-chain, through compatible wallets and hardware wallets, or through cryptocurrency exchanges and other staking services. Risks can include changes in cryptocurrency value, lockup periods, validator penalties, platform risk, and changes to staking reward rates.
