Spotify Progress! May 25, 2026

The process hath begun! Almost 400 of my tracks are now on the Spotify whitelist for podcasts! At the current rate, all the tracks could be available by mid-July.

Pinball??? May 25, 2026

Recently got myself a pinball machine, and I'm enjoying it quite a lot. This is a neat project to enhance the playing experience using external lighting. The video explains all the tools and workflow if you'd like to set this up for your pinball machine, or any similar item that has music and talks.

This system will work with any hardware, because all you really need is a microphone.

Unscheduled Downtime May 7, 2026

The incompetech web server was down today for a few hours. Python's unattended-upgrade wedged the entire system. So... yeah. In theory, upgrades are good... but I only have one server, so if that goes down everything is down.

While I'm here, we are still progressing on getting my music cleared on Spotify Podcast platforms and on YouTube.

If you'd had a stressful day, check out a calming video like this one from my channel Virtual Horizons. All atmosphere, all the time!

YouTube Content ID April 2, 2026

If you've ever gotten hit with a copyright claim on your video before, you know how much of a pain it is to get that resolved and how long it took. It was even worse for me. We are changing that, and (in theory) no one will get an illegal claim ever again!

Spotify Podcasts and Music April 2, 2026

Somewhere, somehow, podcasts on Spotify are being pulled due to my music. I did NOT start any of this, and we are working to try and get everything reinstated. We moved distributors to Frequency Digital. You may have received a notification from them: Kelvin Ruijters t/as Frequency

On Spotify, you can dispute this fairly easily. When contesting the claim, under "I have a license", select "Kelvin Ruijters t/as Frequency" as the licensor. Frequency will then "allow-list" any tracks that Spotify is flagging. My tracks are royalty-free, and you have permission to use them in your podcast. We don't know why this started happening about 18 months ago. Spotify has a section devoted to podcasting and their rules here:

https://creators.spotify.com/resources/create/copyright-creator-education

If, after you dispute these claims, you're still having an issue with your podcast or episodes, please reach out to Frequency Digital at support@frequencydigital.com. We are still working to allow-list all my music by default, but that is not currently the case.

Please be sure to include:

  1. your podcast URL
  2. ANY screenshots of the problems you are facing on the Spotify platform

Spotify Podcast Problem? March 25, 2026

If you recently saw a change in your Spotify distributions (or have older Spotify issues) that involve my music - please let me know! Email me at kevin@incompetech.com and let me know what Spotify is communicating to you so I can contact the appropriate music distributors, and try to get this all sorted...

Update! We have contacted the distributors dealing with these, and they are currently working with Spotify! Thanks to everyone who sent in all your data. I'm expecting some sort of resolution in a few days. I will keep you all informed of the situation.

New Music Tool: Hurdy Gurdy tuner March 8, 2026

Q: What happens when you try to tune your hurdy gurdy with standard online tuners?
A: Pain

So I made this thing that actually works.

A hurdy-gurdy is a stringed instrument that produces sound when a hand-cranked wheel rubs against strings... like a wheeled violin combined with a keyboard... which is really like pushing a fret against strings in an inverse guitar mirror universe sort of way. It is a musical platypus. Gurdy Tuner
