The 1680 MW Pinnapuram Pumped Storage Project, where TCE served as the Owner's Engineer, received the Energy Storage & Flexibility Excellence Award. Engineering education builds knowledge. Engineering practice develops judgement. The profession needs both. Arjun C.R., who leads the Special Structures Division of the Power Business Unit at Tata Consulting Engineers, participated as an industry expert at the Industry Academia Workshop organised by the Department of Earthquake Engineering at IIT Roorkee. The workshop brought together experts from academia and industry, including representatives from leading IITs across India. Drawing on his involvement in the development of seismic codes in India, Arjun spoke about bridging the gap between theoretical learning and practical engineering application. He highlighted the need for curricula that strengthen fundamentals while also helping young engineers develop an intuitive understanding of structural behaviour and the practical skills required to make sound design decisions. He also reflected on how technological and societal change is reshaping structural engineering, calling for continued skill development, effective change management and stronger outreach to prepare the next generation for the profession’s evolving demands. What if sewage sludge could be viewed not merely as waste to be managed, but as a resource with economic value? At IFAT India 2026 in Mumbai, PRANAB DASGUPTA, General Manager, Infrastructure Business Unit and Sludge Treatment Expert at Tata Consulting Engineers, joined the panel discussion, “From Sludge to Revenue: Unlocking the Economics of Resource Recovery”. He shared a roadmap for developing bankable sludge management projects by repositioning sewage treatment plants as resource recovery centres. A key message was clear: potential revenue streams must be assessed at the DPR stage and embedded within the planning and design of treatment facilities. Pranab also highlighted how clear revenue visibility, appropriate risk sharing and stakeholder accountability can support a gradual transition from conventional EPC projects to PPP models, helping attract private investment into sustainable wastewater infrastructure. Seismic resilience depends not only on sound design codes, but also on how consistently they are interpreted, implemented and assured through construction. Arjun C.R., who leads the Special Structures Division of the Power Business Unit at Tata Consulting Engineers, shared this perspective at the Industry Academia Conclave held as part of STESSA 2026 at IIT Delhi. The international conference brought together delegates from 16 countries to advance discussions on seismic design, research and engineering practice. Drawing on his experience in industrial structures, Arjun highlighted the need for consistent application of seismic codes, closer alignment with equipment vendors and stronger compliance with project specifications. He also stressed the importance of skilled fabrication and robust engineering quality assurance during construction, as even minor defects can affect the performance of an entire structural system during a seismic event.
