Innovative gene therapy at Meir Medical Center for patients with autoimmune diseases, including lupus, scleroderma, and more. We are proud to be partners in a groundbreaking, innovative study that may offer hope to thousands of patients in Israel. CAR-T therapy - an advanced immunotherapy originally developed to treat certain types of blood cancer - is now being studied for patients with severe autoimmune diseases such as scleroderma and lupus. The treatment is based on the genetic engineering of immune system cells, aiming to profoundly alter immune activity and suppress the cells involved in the disease. In some cases, this involves extracting T-cells from the patient's blood, engineering them in the laboratory, and returning them to the body. In other cases, it utilizes T-cells from a donor. The research and treatment at Meir are led by Prof. Yair Levy, Director of Internal Medicine E, together with the department's research unit headed by Eran Levy Cohen. The study was conducted with the assistance of Dr. Gilad Itchaki, Director of the Hematology Institute and his team, Prof. Martin Ellis, Director of the Blood Bank and senior hematologist at the Hematology Institute and his team, and Dr Osnat Jarchowsky, Director of Internal Medicine A and her team. "For patients who have exhausted other treatment options, this is a new and significant hope", explains Prof. Levy. "Scleroderma is a disease that can also be fatal. With CAR-T therapy, we are seeing improvements from disease severity levels of 7-8 to levels of 1-2. The responses are much better than those achieved by biological or other medications. It is too early to talk about a complete cure, but we are greatly improving the condition of severe patients." His vision is inspiring: "In ten years, we will reach a situation where a patient arrives with the onset of the disease, we will provide her with CAR-T treatment, and she will go home healthy." Ayelet Hayun is one of the first participants to receive the promising experimental treatment. "I am already feeling an improvement," she shares. "Before the treatment, even a shower would cause me shortness of breath, and today I feel a real change. In my skin, breathing, and walking. I know it is a process that takes time, but for me, every such improvement gives hope. The thing that is most important to me right now is to reach my daughter's wedding in November and walk down the aisle together with her." New partnership aimed at advancing Israeli pharma giant's anti-IL-15 drug for autoimmune diseases; CEO Richard Francis to detail growth strategy and pipeline progress at J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference on Jan. 13 *** Teva Pharmaceuticals and Royalty Pharma announced on Sunday a funding agreement of up to $500 million to accelerate development of TEV-’408, Teva’s experimental treatment targeting autoimmune diseases including vitiligo. Under the agreement, Royalty Pharma will initially provide $75 million to support a Phase 2b trial of TEV-’408 for vitiligo, expected to begin in 2026. Pending trial results, Royalty Pharma may invest an additional $425 million to co-fund a Phase 3 program. If approved, Teva will pay Royalty Pharma milestone payments and royalties on global sales. TEV-’408 is a monoclonal antibody designed to block interleukin-15 (IL-15), a cytokine involved in multiple immune-mediated conditions. The treatment is currently in Phase 1b trials for vitiligo and Phase 2a trials for celiac disease. It received Fast Track designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in May 2025. Preliminary trial data support IL-15 as a promising therapeutic target for autoimmune disorders. Vitiligo, a chronic skin condition causing loss of pigmentation, affects 0.5% to 2% of the global population and currently has only one approved topical therapy with limited application.
