I am writing to make a formal complaint regarding the cancellation/voidance of my Tesco Car Insurance policy, policy number 6005207P, and the unacceptable way in which this matter has been handled.
I took out my Tesco Car Insurance policy in August 2026 and paid a substantial amount in advance to secure the cover. Tesco subsequently requested evidence of my No Claims Discount (NCD), which I fully complied with.
NCD evidence was provided within the required timeframe
I had previously contacted Tesco's customer service before the bank holiday to explain that my previous insurer, Budget Insurance, had made multiple errors concerning my NCD. I specifically explained that Budget Insurance was in the process of correcting the issue and that this was outside my control.
As soon as I received this documentation, I sent it to the email address Tesco provided:
This was sent on 3 September 2026 at 11:46am, before the deadline Tesco had given me.
I followed Tesco's instructions and provided the requested documentation. I also included my details as instructed, including my name, policy information and email address, and attached the NCD documentation from Budget Insurance.I therefore dispute Tesco's assertion that I failed to provide the requested evidence within the required timeframe.
Tesco's handling of my evidence is extremely concerning. On 4 September 2026, I received an email informing me that Tesco had cancelled/voided my insurance policy on the basis that my NCD had allegedly not been received before the deadline.
I immediately contacted Tesco's customer service and explained that I had already sent the NCD documentation on 3 September to the exact email address Tesco had instructed me to use.
During this call, I was told that the back office could not locate my email.I was then asked what I had put in the subject line. I explained that I had used a subject referring to Budget Insurance and the attached documentation, because the document itself was evidence from my previous insurer.
I was then told that I should have included my Tesco policy number in the subject line.
This is extremely concerning because, if Tesco required the policy number to appear specifically in the subject line, this should have been made absolutely clear in the original instructions. Furthermore, the email contained my identifying information and the attached NCD evidence, which should have enabled Tesco to identify and process the documentation.
At the request of the Tesco representative, I resent the documentation while I was still on the telephone. I was placed on hold while the representative contacted the back office, only to be told that the back office still could not locate the email.
I have evidence demonstrating that I sent the documentation to the email address Tesco provided, and I am prepared to provide the relevant email trail, timestamps, attachment and delivery evidence as part of this complaint.
I was then told to purchase another insurance policy.
What I find particularly unacceptable is that, despite my having already paid a substantial amount for my Tesco policy and having complied with Tesco's request for my NCD evidence, I was effectively told that I should take out another car insurance policy because Tesco's back office could not locate my documentation.
I explained that I could not simply find additional money to purchase another policy when I had already paid Tesco in advance for insurance.
I requested to speak to a manager, supervisor or team leader. Initially, I was told that nobody was available. I was eventually told that a manager would contact me within 48 hours.
I subsequently spoke with Gabriel, a Tesco manager, on 4 September 2026. Unfortunately, his response did not resolve the matter. I explained that I had provided the NCD evidence within the required timeframe and had even resent it again to the same Tesco email address.
I asked for the matter to be properly investigated, including examination of the email trail and the evidence showing when and where my documentation was sent.
Instead, I was again advised to obtain another insurance policy.
This is simply not an acceptable resolution.
The consequences to me are serious
Tesco's actions have left me in an extremely difficult position.
I require my vehicle to travel to work and I do not work locally. I cannot legally drive without valid insurance. I have already paid a substantial amount upfront to Tesco to secure my insurance, only to then be told that my policy has been cancelled because Tesco claims it did not receive documentation that I have clear evidence of sending.
I have now been left facing the prospect of having to find additional money to purchase another policy through no fault of my own.
Quite simply it is essential in my opinion to be able to speak to someone rather than doing everything online
I sold a car but couldn't find it's car insurance policy online to check and change auto renew status. Resulted in £300 being taken. Phoned to cancel policy on day policy started. Told that Tesco would keep my cash for 2 weeks. Don't see why they can't return the cash straightaway. The policy has been cancelled, but still no cash returned. Not a nice way to do business.
Very helpful
Explained everything clearly and what the next step would be
I was unable to make changes to my policy online but once I got through to a member of the insurance team they resolved my issue straightaway. Excellent service
