About Vrbo

Written by the company

Vrbo is a vacation rental platform for booking entire homes, and only entire homes. No shared spaces. No shared hosts. Just one place for you and your group to stay together.

Founded in 1995, Vrbo now offers more than 2 million vacation rentals across 190+ countries. From beach houses and cabins to condos and city apartments, Vrbo helps travelers find the right space for trips where privacy, comfort, and connection matter most.

What is Vrbo?
Vrbo is focused exclusively on entire-home stays, so you book the whole place to yourselves, not a shared room, shared space, or host-occupied home. That matters for travelers who want more privacy, more room, and one home base for family vacations, reunions, and group travel. Vrbo started as Vacation Rentals By Owner and still focuses on helping travelers book entire homes for trips that are better together.

Why travelers choose Vrbo
Not every trip is best served by a hotel room or a stay with shared spaces. Vrbo is for travelers who want an entire home where they can stay together more comfortably. With a Vrbo vacation rental, travelers can:

* stay together under one roof
* enjoy privacy with no shared spaces
* cook, relax, and connect comfortably
* choose a home that fits the way their group wants to travel
* spend less time coordinating separate rooms and more time being together

That focus is what makes Vrbo different. Unlike platforms that mix shared and private stays, Vrbo is centered on entire homes only. For families and groups, that can mean more privacy, fewer compromises, and more time together.

How does Vrbo work?
Booking on Vrbo is simple:

1. Search where and when you want to travel
2. Compare vacation rentals, prices, amenities, and reviews
3. Book the entire home that fits your trip

Vrbo makes booking feel straightforward, so travelers can spend less time second-guessing and more time looking forward to the trip.

Book with confidence
Vrbo helps travelers book with confidence through clearer information upfront. Listings can include:

* verified guest reviews
* real traveler photos
* detailed amenities and property highlights
* Q&A from past guests
* review summaries that help set expectations

Vrbo also highlights homes with a strong track record of great stays, giving travelers more confidence in the vacation rental they choose and fewer surprises when they arrive.

Support you can trust
Every booking is automatically backed by VrboCare. If a significant issue affects a covered stay, Vrbo will help travelers find a similar place or receive a refund when eligible. Vrbo also offers customer support 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with help available through chat and phone. And because trust also means privacy, interior cameras, shared homes, and unannounced visits from hosts are not allowed on the platform. Together, these protections help travelers book with more confidence and fewer surprises.

Rewards through One Key
Vrbo is part of One Key, a free travel rewards program that lets you earn and use rewards across Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo. Members can earn up to 2% in OneKeyCash on vacation rentals and use rewards across eligible bookings on all three brands. Members also get instant Member Prices on hotels through Expedia and Hotels.com:

* Blue members save 10% or more
* Silver members save 15% or more
* Gold members save 20% or more
* Platinum members save 20% or more

The more you stay, the more you save*.

*Terms apply. OneKeyCash is earned on eligible bookings, and redemption is limited to eligible bookings and participating vacation rentals.

A really bad pig in a poke

I called the management company for information about a house that looked suitable for my purposes. Based on what they told me, I booked it. Upon arriving, I was unpleasantly surprised to learn that I had been completely misinformed about how accessible it was. I specifically confirmed beforehand that I could drive up to the front door, because I made the trip to visit my disabled brother. In fact there were 2 steep flights of stairs- impossible for my brother to navigate- to get to the front door. The story gets worse, as I attempted to work with both the management company and the owner to work out a way to access a locked back entryway. The owner ignored my text and phone messages seeking help. The management company attempted to be decent, offering a 20% discount which I have yet to see, but my vacation was basically- pointlessly- ruined.

My last stay was a disaster

My last stay was a disaster. I was the first person to book the new rental. There were no sheets, holes in the mattress covers, broken blinds, dog hairs on the furniture and it was generally not clean and this is just the tip of the iceberg. We stayed the first night after the host's brother got us some sheets. When I got up the next morning, and the host was outside mowing the lawn, I decided that it was not something that I wanted to continue to deal with and we left. The owner had agreed to a refund of everything but the night that we stayed. We got back the payment from the owner but VRBO would not initially give any money back on their end. I had to make several requests and was on the phone for over an hour. They said they could not give back the taxes or the $299 rental fee. I feel that if I am the first person staying in a rental that they are promoting, then I should be entitled to all of my money back if the rental is not up to typical VRBO standards. It is not the renters job to make sure that everyone else is doing their job and holding up their end of the bargain!

If I could leave zero starrs

If I could leave zero starrs, I would. We have had nothing but negative experiences trying to book a rental property for three weeks in Naples, Florida. VRBO grabs your money pretty quickly but then we get notifications that an owner has sold the property we had booked and paid for, or don’t receive a response regarding having our two dogs with us, but our money was accepted and then we were denied rental of said property without a proper reason from the owner. Steer clear of VRBO and their clients.

VRBO Property: 5444590 Unit ID: 6018751

I found a property about a week ago to book for 3 weeks in February of 2027. I wrote to the host, Jenny Sanchez, to ask her if she would make an exception, as we have 2 dogs & her listing only said 1 dog. She was extremely slow to respond & when she did, she asked to see pictures of the dogs. I also indicated to her that my 2 dogs are service dogs. I explained that we are very responsible owners and have rented for the past 4 years without any incidents or complaints. She eventually responded, said the dogs were cute & told me there was an adjustment in the price, which she did not bother to attach. I should also point out that VRBO had already accepted my reservation and billed me for it. I also realize that the host has the final say. I wrote Jenny back to let her know I could not see any updated prices & asked her to just tell me what it is. I figured what she was talking about was an extra service fee for the additional dog. A couple of days later, I got an email from VRBO saying they refunded my money & a response from Jenny that the prices I booked at were summer prices & they now updated to the seasonal pricing. Considering I originally booked at the end of the summer & put the dates down for when I wanted to reserve, this was highly irresponsible of her. She could've said no from the very beginning & saved me a lot of trouble. Although it is her property and she can do as she pleases, this is a pitiful way to treat a customer.

VRBO customer service is useless

Had to spend hours on the phone with customer service and kept getting lied to and would have to call back. Do not recommend.
The host of the property has been great though. It's just dealing with VRBO that is just not worth the hassle

Didn’t get what we expected we reserved…

Didn’t get what we expected we reserved a nice room with a balcony at the last minute they said they had a plumbing issue and promised that they were upgrading us to something better round the corner. Upon arrival the apt. Was dirty bed not made dirty bathroom broken closet doors and no balcony as promised just an encoded sun room some plants could fit in . I told the host I was very unhappy they asked to send someone out to clean but I had already began stripping sheets and washing everything. Only got a 125 refund back it was a horrible location and unclean do not recommend!!!
