WATCH YOUR P'S AND Q'S WHEN SHOPPING IN FRANCE WITH A NOTICEABLE ACCENT :!
Went to the local Gifi store in Fumel. Please bear in mind I have been patronising them for more than three years, and even have a VIP Card, because I am constantly in there buying things.
Today however my opinion was changed drastically by my experience in store.
I was purchasing a bit too much as usual, and reaching for an item that peaked my interest, my hand collided with a badly placed Glass Picture Frame, which fell on the floor from the top shelf.
My immediate reaction was to try to stop it which resulted in it damaging my finger, which was badly cut, and landed on my foot....
This is where the shocking reaction of both the Shop Assistant and the Manager began.
Instead of enquiring as to my finger etc, and asking if I was okay, their reaction was to stare at me, no apology, and then completely ignoring me, began to try to repair the frame....!
To then add insult to injury, she called the Store Manager over, who behaved in exactly the same manner?! And even though she explained to him exactly what I told her had happened, he made me repeat myself, which was also uncomfortable, as I am still learning French.
His reponse... "That's okay... You can go"
I felt completely humiliated, and can honestly say that I felt my treatment was solely because I am an English person living in France...!!! I was completely flabbergasted...
Needless to say I WILL NEVER PATRONISE GIFI AGAIN...
So in conclusion, as an Expat, if your grasp of the French language is not the best, and your accent noticeable, shop with trepidation in Rural France...
