Item never delivered but paid for in full.
I have been a returning customer of Whiskey Bidders, but my most recent experience has been extremely disappointing and raises serious questions about how this company handles its responsibilities to customers.
I purchased a bottle and paid in full, including shipping. The item was never delivered. There was no attempted delivery, no contact from the courier, and no update from the company. I had to chase every detail myself just to establish what had happened.
After several days of silence, I was eventually told that the parcel had been “returned damaged,” yet no courier report was provided.
What concerned me most was the company’s response. Despite the fact that the goods were never delivered, Whiskey Bidders insisted they had no responsibility because I did not purchase additional insurance. In practice, this meant they treated the entire loss as my problem.
From my perspective, this creates the clear impression that the company is operating as though their internal terms override Irish consumer law, which states that the seller remains responsible for ensuring goods are delivered intact. Their approach suggests that unless you pay for extra insurance, they believe they have no obligation to provide the level of consumer protection required by law. That is not how reputable businesses should operate.
Throughout the process there was no proactive communication, no transparency, no courier documentation, and no willingness to resolve the matter professionally. Every update had to be chased, and even basic information such as the location of the parcel was delayed or unclear.
This experience has seriously undermined my confidence in the company. In a community built on trust and reputation, the handling of this matter fell far below the standard one would expect.
After reading your post,
Nothing you’ve said changes the key fact: the item I paid for was never delivered to me. Under Irish consumer law, the seller remains responsible until goods are actually delivered intact.
No internal Terms & Conditions, “opt-outs”, or optional insurance can override that. Irish law protects the consumer—whether Whiskey Bidders agrees with that or not.
Your refusal to remedy a clear case of non-delivery has now been referred to the relevant authorities.
I stand by my experience and my review.

Thank you for your review. We share your disappointment and understand your frustration and annoyance that your bottle got broken in transit, it is the last thing we would want to see happen and to be fair it was the first breakage during shipping that we have had this year. We put a lot of effort into packing bottles as well as we can, and many of our 5star TrustPilot reviews mention this which is great feedback to get. As we have explained to you via email, DPD did not let us know that your parcel has been damaged and held at one of their depots, they have apologised for this and have promised to retrain the staff at that depot on this matter - I sent you on the email that we got from DPD (it seems that they don't do 'reports' on damaged parcels), they ship thousands of parcels each day and if a parcel gets damaged they put it to one side and then return it to the sender when they get a chance. If we had known we would of course have contacted you about it immediately.
Just to re-iterate what we said to you via email - we are very clear that if you do not avail of our insurance cover then shipping is ENTIRELY at your own risk. We mention this in our Terms & Conditions (which you would have agreed to when you registered on our website), it is clearly visible on our Shipping Guide (in bold type) AND you actually chose NOT to avail of it by 'opting out' (you have to untick a box to opt out of our shipping insurance) so even though we are sorry for your loss we are not liable to cover it unfortunately. Other online whiskey auctions operate in the same way as we do, though some make shipping insurance mandatory so that every buyer has to pay it.
