This is my first year working as a contractor and having my own limited company. When choosing an accountant, I specifically wanted someone who would guide me through the process, explain my responsibilities, and ensure I remained fully compliant.

Wainwrights had excellent reviews and appeared friendly, approachable, and reassuring, which is why I chose them. Unfortunately, my experience has been very different, and I'm unsure why it has been so different from all the other reviews.

Throughout the year, I have found myself having to chase my accountants to ensure important compliance matters were being addressed. For example, I only discovered the need to register for PAYE and arrange VAT payments because fellow contractors asked whether I had already done so. These are the kinds of things I would have expected my accountant advise me on.

The latest example involved an email informing me that I needed to pay my PAYE liabilities for Q1. Prior to receiving this email, I had not been given any information about how much was due or how to make the payment. I replied immediately requesting clarification but received no response. When I called, I was told the email had been sent in error. However, later that same day I received another email containing the payment details, but by then the deadline had already passed by two days.

What was particularly disappointing was that the email contained no explanation or apology for the confusion. I responded to express my concerns and frustration but, once again, received no reply.

Overall, I have felt unsupported and have lacked confidence that my business is being looked after. As a first-time contractor, I wanted guidance and reassurance from my accountant, and unfortunately I feel I have not had that.
