Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 46 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. People frequently struggle with extremely long phone wait times, automated chatbots that loop endlessly, and unhelpful customer support representatives who fail to resolve basic problems. Consumers also report severe payment delays, unexpected billing changes, and very frustrating issues regarding heavily reduced dental benefits or hidden costs. Some reviewers were happy with the helpful staff members who occasionally provided great assistance and polite customer service during phone calls. Customers also appreciate when policy details are explained clearly by dedicated representatives and health coverage works smoothly for certain specific medical claims.

Misleading health fund

We had a family policy and called them to see if they had another cover that suited our needs. They couldn’t offer a different plan so they offered a free month - I accepted 3 weeks later I was able to find another health fund with what we were looking for. Ahm requested a transfer which they rejected after 11 days and told ahm we no longer wanted to change providers (no one spoke to us and was not true) I called NIB and said I want to cancel and change and not to cancel the transfer which they responded I couldn’t cancel only my partner can because he set it up (also not true) my partner called them and cancelled and they said because they gave us a free month they won’t refund us the money we paid after the transfer was placed. Dodgy, misleading and a waste of time. Wouldn’t recommend.

I've held health insurance with several…

I've held health insurance with several providers before, and nib OSHC has been by far the most frustrating.
The provider directory isn't reliable. I've visited clinics listed as "no gap" for international students and been charged a gap fee anyway, and found at least one listed provider that doesn't exist at the address given. This has happened with more than one clinic, not a one-off.
Customer service has been inconsistent, and reps have sometimes seemed unfamiliar with nib's own rules. I've had to re-explain the same issue across multiple calls, including dropped calls with no follow-up. The claims team has also processed claims incorrectly, and I've had to catch and correct the errors myself.
Even straightforward fixes have taken weeks, and I've had to chase nib every few days just for a status update. I'm currently stuck with them because switching would reset my pregnancy waiting period, otherwise I'd have already left.
Can't recommend nib based on my experience. If you're comparing OSHC providers, verify any "no gap" claim directly with the clinic before relying on nib's directory.

2 back surgeries

2 back surgeries. NIB not paying as they took 40 minutes to come up with an excuse that they did not have my providers number & bank details. Called provider & they have already registered with NIB. Just another excuse to not pay a claim. I have paid them about $30k over 20+ years & they cannot payout $540. Unbelievable.
I have now moved to a different private health insurance provider.
Quick to take money, not to pay.
Good bye NIB.
I hope a lot more realise before they need to make a claim

Nib has been absolutely amazing

Nib has been absolutely amazing. Their customer service is excellent, every time I have a question they always answer promptly and give detailed instructions. Not once I’ve struggled in understanding my coverage and have felt fully backed by them. I recently had a health situation which was completely covered and made the whole thing that bit less stressful.
After some horrific experiences with other insurance companies such as Allianz, being covered by Nib is an absolute pleasure. I would recommend them to anyone!

Switched to NIB in March 2026

Switched to NIB in March 2026 . In July I receive and email advising basically that if I don’t use their network of providers or dentists , osteopaths and optometrists I will not receive the benefits I was led to believe I would be getting when I switched . Btw the only had 1 optometrist in my area, 2 dentists and 1 approved Osteopath. So I’ll be switching health fund rather than my preferred service providers .

Stripping dental benefits

I joined around May 2026 as the dental benefits were good.
In the last few months, those dental benefits have been striped.
I can no longer have unlimited preventive dental care. They are also changing how much I get back if I don't use one of their dentists.
Disgusting behaviour that makes them absolutely no better than any other health fund.

NIB removes freedom of choice for dental services

I just received an email from NIB about removing freedom of choice in relation to dental services.
"From 1 October 2026, the amount you get back for eligible dental services may change if you visit a provider who isn’t part of the First Choice network. You’ll receive a set benefit amount (fixed dollar amount) for eligible services instead of a percentage of the treatment cost."

I have been a member of the NIB Health Fund for almost 30 years and am really angry about this, especially as a person's relationship with their dentist is a very trusting one. I will be looking at other funds now.

I changed from HCF thanks to poor…

I changed from HCF thanks to poor advice from Compare Club. I joined, gave bank details, and was advised that my payment was rejected for no apparent reason according to NIB.
After speaking to a bank lady who advised that,if it was a dubious transaction I would have received an immediate response, as I did from the bank recently.
After speaking to 2 different people from NIB, I was assured that everything was ok and that I would have the payment deducted tomorrow and all would be good.
UNTIL I noticed another email from NIB detailing my subscription and the fact that it was paid up to August next month.
One problem, nothing has been deducted by NIB from my account.
My question, if I slip over, break some bones tomorrow morning after reading the very detailed report of my subscription will NIB cover me.
I was assured by a NIB consultant that I would be covered. I have no way of knowing if this will be honoured.

NIB is useless and unprofessional - the service is dreadful.

Since going to NIB every time the change to goal posts and add something else to be done or needed. Always blame NDIS or client. Rude, ignorant and completely useless- If the government is using them to save money then it is working because they never pay on time, thwart any correspondence. Maybe the NDIA is aiming to use NIB to stop the flow of NDIS payouts. it is working

Constistantly have such terrible communication and delayed processing of forms. sent in a direct debit form two months ago as I changed bank and they are still trying to take money from my old account.
Took three months to get my daughter signed up to insurance when I changed her over from another provider - so I had to make myself a second policy with souther cross to get her covered which took 24 hours so she was covered while I waited for them to confirm her a policy. The only reason I am with them is because it’s an employment benefit otherwise I would 100% be with southern cross.

I used their telehealth call option today. Had to pay $49 upfront. Call booked for 2pm today. 2pm came and gone. No call at all. Logged a query. They use an AI chat bot. No help at all and no call. You also can't call telehealth. Not recommended.

Failed Cancellation Process & Continued Direct Debits

UPDATE (1 June)
I am extremely disappointed that this issue remains unresolved almost three months after my initial cancellation request.

On 4 March, I contacted NIB to cancel my policy. After verifying my identity over the phone, I was told that I would need to wait for another team to call me back from an unknown number to reconfirm my details before the cancellation could be processed. I waited, but no one ever called.

Despite my cancellation request in March, NIB continued deducting premiums from my bank account through April and May. When I contacted NIB again on 1 June, I was informed that they were unable to refund the April and May payments and that I would once again need to wait up to 48 hours for an unknown number to call me back to reconfirm my details before my policy could be cancelled.

I find it unreasonable that a customer can verify their identity during a cancellation call but still be required to wait for another unsolicited callback to complete the process. It is even more concerning that payments continued to be taken for months after my original cancellation request, yet no satisfactory explanation or resolution has been provided.

This experience has caused significant frustration and inconvenience. I expect NIB to review this matter, investigate why my March cancellation request was not actioned, and provide a fair outcome regarding the continued direct debits taken from my account.

Poor Service

Phoned service number was connected to a Chatbot named NIBBY I called to find out if my Item numbers were covered by my insurance the bot asked what surgery I was having then asked what hospital I was attending NIBBY could not understand & kept repeating the question in a loop after several minutes I was too frustrated to go on
I will definitely have to part ways with NIB & look for a provider with more of a Human resolve
CHATBOTS can never replace humans!!!

No easy community channel

No email.to send documents..you only call a number that direct you to a chat box. Started the conversation, transferred to a human to chat with but they just disconnect ceremoniously and no document is uploaded. It has happened twice. Its not my connection...its from their end. Its hard to communicate with them...no need to have them offer services if no proper channels of communication

Claims can only be made online

Claims can only be made online. Plus there is zero discount for up from annual payment- direct debit discount only. I have claims to make but will not provide my account details despite all these big companies assuring how "secure" they are. I have already been involved in 2 major company's being hacked- ie customers details accessed. So I dont believed any of the sales pitch about how much they 'care'. It is all about profit. Too bad if we are hacked. Phone help was excellent but limited.
