Governance

The HPSF Governing Board oversees the Foundation’s activities according to its Charter.

Through a series of open technical projects, HPSF aims to build, promote, and advance a portable core software stack for HPC by increasing adoption, lowering barriers to contribution, and supporting development efforts. The governance of each Technical Project is as set forth in the applicable charter for each Technical Project.

Join as a Project

  • Grow your project through open governance and integration into a world-wide community
  • Leverage a community connecting hardware vendors, software developers, and users to stay on top of a rapidly evolving HPC landscape
  • Get help with project community and infrastructure management such as CI, meetings and training

Projects will need to be approved by the Technical Advisory Council.  View requirements and to apply, please submit a project proposal in the TAC Repository.

This comprehensive guide outlines how projects join HPSF, how they progress through our maturity stages, and what sustainability means within our ecosystem.

HPSF Membership FAQ

HPSF membership is a way for organizations — including technology companies, national labs, academic institutions, and cloud providers — to formally support the High Performance Software Foundation, shape its direction, and collaborate with peers across the HPC ecosystem. HPSF is part of the nonprofit Linux Foundation.

HPSF offers three tiers: Premier, General, and Associate. Premier Members receive the highest level of visibility, a tailored marketing amplification plan, and seats on the Governing Board, TAC, and Outreach Committee. General and Associate Members participate at a scaled level appropriate to their level of investment.

Members gain influence over the strategic direction of HPC software development, seats on governance bodies (depending on tier), logo placement on the HPSF website and marketing materials, access to community forums (Slack, TAC meetings), discounts on Linux Foundation events and training, early access to HPSF announcements, and opportunities to co-create thought leadership content such as blogs, videos, and case studies.

Premier Members have the deepest level of influence and visibility within HPSF. They receive dedicated seats on the Governing Board and TAC, a customized marketing amplification plan, and priority placement in HPSF marketing and leadership materials. General Members participate in governance through an elected representative seat and receive full access to community forums, events, and member marketing benefits. Both tiers are valued contributors to the HPSF community.

Any organization that builds, deploys, or depends on high performance software — including hardware vendors, cloud providers, software ISVs, national laboratories, and universities — can benefit from HPSF membership.

HPSF is governed by a Governing Board that oversees foundation activities, a Technical Advisory Council (TAC) that guides technical direction, and an Outreach Committee. The governance model is built on transparency, inclusivity, and community-driven decision-making. The full charter is available on GitHub.

Yes. Organizational membership is for companies and institutions that want to support and influence HPSF. Contributing a project is a separate path for open source projects that want to join the HPSF ecosystem and benefit from neutral governance, infrastructure support, and community growth. An organization can do both.

Membership dues fund shared services including digital marketing, CI/CD infrastructure, community and program management, legal (trademark and IP support), documentation, and training programs for the broader HPC community.

Yes. As part of the Linux Foundation, HPSF members benefit from LF’s broad network of open source communities, legal and IP infrastructure, and access to LF events and training with member discounts.
