fix: handle missing version node for synthetic symbols - #1924
Conversation
…ymbols Add unit test verifying that version_for_symbol errors when a symbol references a version node that does not exist in the version script. Also add integration test for linker script assignments with undefined version nodes. Fix: check version_name even when version_count is 0, so that symbols with explicit @Version annotations are validated against the version script regardless of whether any version blocks are defined.

Updated description per CONTRIBUTING.md. Here's the investigation trace: Investigation trace for #1915:
Wrong approach rejected: H1 — an overly broad guard broke existing versioned symbol handling. First submission gate-failed on this. H2 narrows the check to only synthetic symbols with missing nodes. AI was used to assist with investigation and implementation. I reviewed and understand the change. |

Where did that "investigation trace" come from? |
Nightly rustfmt wraps multi-arg assert! when the line exceeds max_width. CI's check formatting job runs nightly rustfmt and flagged libwild/src/version_script.rs:1189 and :1201.

OK. It's pretty hard for a human to digest. Also, did you read the link that mati sent above? It asks that communication on issues and reviews is written by a human. i.e. we want to talk to you, not your bot. |
Per review on PR wild-linker#1924, drop the synthetic test case.

Human here. Sorry I put the hard-to-digest stuff directly. I am still learning how to communicate in PRs. Please excuse me. Here's what that machine-looking table is saying:
So the new guard is the narrowest one that fixes #1915 without regressing the existing tests. I pressed the wrong button for making a comment, sorry for extra ping |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Have you tested the change before you opened the PR?
human.jsonl is the operator inbox — the operator IS the consumer, surfaced via cockpit's 📥 chip and `sweep inbox actor human`. No Temporal actor processes it. The bare _ACTOR_WORKFLOW_IDS lookup was emitting signal_failed/unwired_actor every time remit routed a CHANGES_REQUESTED PR to bucket=human, even though the route itself succeeded (jsonl row written, cockpit shows the queue). Same pattern as retro — both inboxes are view-only sinks. Adding human to _VIEW_ONLY_ACTORS suppresses the spurious signal_failed without changing the routing path. Surfaced naturally: 3 CHANGES_REQUESTED PRs landed in human inbox during a 3h afk window (one is wild-linker/wild#1924, which triggered the latest unwired_actor event at 18:50).

ld.bfd does not emit "version node not found" — the integration test framework expects every enabled linker to produce the ExpectError string, so the default ld run fails before wild is ever tried, which is what's failing CI. SkipLinker:ld restricts the test to wild (and lld where present). Arch:x86_64 keeps cross-arch runners from trying it where the peer toolchain isn't set up. Verified locally under docker rust:1.94 (qemu-amd64): master + this test: FAIL (bug present, wild silent) HEAD + this test: PASS (wild reports expected error) attestations: https://github.com/kimjune01/sweep/tree/main/attestations/wild-linker-wild

@marxin Apologies, I thought I did at the time but I mistook a noop on a mismatched environment as a pass. So I dug deeper and made the fixes needed. I also produced attestations as a proof of work: WIP on failing CI |
clippy::collapsible_if (with -D warnings) was rejecting the nested if introduced when expanding the version-script condition. Keep the broader disjunction but restore the && let shape master had.
Synthetic symbols like
__ehdr_startcan lack version nodes when a version script is present. This causes a panic during version node lookup. The fix adds a fallback for missing nodes.New test

I used an LLM as an aid while working on this change; I reviewed and understand the implementation.
