Update python 3.14.8 → 3.15.0

Source: github:python/cpython:tag
Release: https://github.com/python/cpython/releases/tag/v3.15.0
Changelog: python/cpython@v3.14.8...v3.15.0
Released: 6 days ago (2026-10-09)

Pkgscan: 2 below-threshold signals (all Info severity, risk score 0.2). Demoted in benign contexts (test fixtures, CI workflow setup); expand for details.

Vulnerability impact

Partition analysis at 3.15.0 (uses each advisory's fixed-version, vulnerable-range, affected-ranges, and fix-commit ancestry to decide):

  • 3 cleared — the new version is outside the advisory's affected range, OR the tag's lineage includes a known fix-commit. These will drop off the next scan.
  • 1 still affecting — the new version matches the advisory's range, the fix hasn't been published, OR the advisory lacks structured range data so partition defaulted to still-affecting (the conservative pick). Rows marked ⚠ unverified are the latter case.

Both patches failed the 3.15.0 build on amd64 and arm64 ("Reversed (or
previously applied) patch detected"). They are upstream:
- gh-157265 (CVE-2026-87910, PSF-2026-40, tarfile) in 3.15.0rc3
- gh-143923 (CVE-2025-15367, poplib) in 3.15.0a6
per CPython's Misc/NEWS.d, and each reverse-applies cleanly to the
v3.15.0 tree (excluding its NEWS blurb, which 3.15.0 folds into the
changelog). With no patches left, `patch` leaves build_deps. The two
CVE regression tests stay as guards.

Closing. We're staying on the 3.14 series for now.

  • node-lts can't build with it. The released node-lts configure only accepts Python up to 3.14 ("Please use python3.14 or python3.13 …"). node main already accepts 3.15, so this resolves itself once that reaches an LTS release.
  • It's a fleet migration, not a security bump. The build reported 100+ packages rebuilding against the new minor series.
  • The security gain is small. Of the 3 advisories 3.15.0 clears, CVE-2025-15367 (poplib) and PSF-2026-40 (tarfile) are already patched on 3.14.8. The third, PSF-2026-42 (CVE-2026-12345, the tempfile.TemporaryDirectory cleanup race), will be backported onto 3.14.8 in a separate PR.

pkgmgr is getting a per-package minor-series pin (python → 3.14), so the nightly stops re-proposing 3.15.x until we lift it on purpose.
