aeneas-latest: build against the mathlib package, offline

Depends on #1244 (mathlib + mathlib-oleans); merge it first. Until then this PR's diff includes #1244's commits: the branch has #1244's current head (6cf38b52) and main (b3fb90d3) merged in, with merge commits, no rebase. Once #1244 lands, the diff against main is packages/aeneas-latest/ only (2 files).

Review round 2026-11-05 (52240d1, plus #1244's 6cf38b5 merged in)

  • The pin check reads the pinned source's manifest. build.sh no longer overwrites the tarball's backends/lean/lake-manifest.json with the Local copy; the tag and Lake-revision checks read the tarball's file (it ships one, byte-identical to the Local today). The Local stays, because pkgmgr's lean consumer check (data/toolchain_constraints.toml, pkgs#999) reads packages/aeneas-latest/lake-manifest.json for Aeneas's Lean version. build.sh now refuses a Local that differs from the tarball's, so a tarball bump that forgets it fails instead of passing against old pins. The installed usr/share/aeneas-latest/lake-manifest.json is the tarball's.
  • The lakefile guard checks leanOptions, the option LEANFLAGS copies: the line must equal leanOptions := #[⟨weak.linter.dupNamespace, false⟩]exactly. It also fails iflakefile.leanis missing or alakefile.tomlappears (the oldgrepreturned 2 there and theif` read that as "no match").
  • Every refusal names the next step. Tag mismatch: move the aeneas pin to a commit that requires the packaged tag, or bump mathlib-oleans and mathlib (with lean). Lake-revision mismatch: move the aeneas pin, or re-pin mathlib-oleans/sources.ncl. The lean-bump message names mathlib-oleans too, like the other three copies.
  • Comments describe the current design only: no "used to fetch" history, no "old cache-get slice", and the imports_full_mathlib comment no longer claims the two trees agree on shared modules (they share none now). mathlib: all of Mathlib v4.35.0, built from source offline #1244's comments that described aeneas-latest's pre-PR layout are neutral now (6cf38b5).
  • mathlib left build_deps; it stays in runtime_deps, which are in the build too (AGENTS.md). Its path note moved to runtime_deps.
  • LEAN_PATH order comes from mathlib: all of Mathlib v4.35.0, built from source offline #1244's 6cf38b5 (LC_ALL=C), so this package's /usr/lib/lean/pkgs/LEAN_PATH changes order too; value below. loadout-fv-lab#1 is updated to it (68d5647).

Checked here: the guard against the real lakefile.lean from the pinned tarball (passes) and 7 negative controls (option changed, option added, second leanOptions line, option removed, lakefile.toml present, lakefile.lean missing, moreLeanArgs added: all fail), under sh and dash; the step-2 pin check extracted and run against the real tarball manifest and Mathlib v4.35.0's manifest (passes), a stale Local, a tag mismatch and a changed batteries revision (all fail, each with its next step); bash -n; nickel format; min check --packages aeneas-latest mathlib mathlib-oleans (every non-build check passes). Not built: 6cf38b5 re-keys mathlib-oleans, which is not cached yet, and a local Mathlib compile is ~45 min. The build-bot run verifies the build with mathlib only in runtime_deps, the new pin check and guard on the real tree, imports_aeneas / imports_full_mathlib, and the LEAN_PATH value below.

What changes

aeneas-latest stops fetching Mathlib's Azure prebuilt cache. It had used lake exe cache get on the olean closure of the 31 Mathlib modules Aeneas imports, and nothing checks the bytes that cache returns. Now it takes all of Mathlib from the mathlib package, which compiles every module from sha256-pinned sources.

  • needs (dns + internet) is gone, so the build has no network.
  • The 9 Mathlib/dependency Sources are gone. Only the aeneas tarball remains.
  • curl, git, ca-certificates, toolchain and leangz are dropped from build_deps. They were only there for the cache tool. make and jq are added.
  • mathlib is added to runtime_deps (runtime deps are in the build too, so not to build_deps). Since mathlib: all of Mathlib v4.35.0, built from source offline #1244 split, mathlib is the thin layer: /usr/share/mathlib/{LEAN_PATH,MANIFEST,lake-manifest.json} and the licences. It has mathlib-oleans (the compile, oleans under /usr/lib/lean/mathlib/<lake package>/lib) as a runtime dep, so depending on mathlib brings the oleans into both this build and every consumer's closure. That is the dependency mathlib: all of Mathlib v4.35.0, built from source offline #1244's build.ncl says to install. mathlib also refuses to package unless mathlib-oleans was compiled from its exact sources, so aeneas-latest's pin check against mathlib's lake-manifest.json covers the oleans too.
  • The package now installs only Aeneas's own oleans (usr/lib/lean/pkgs/aeneas/lib). /usr/lib/lean/pkgs/LEAN_PATH = the Aeneas entry followed by /usr/share/mathlib/LEAN_PATH's entries, so the consumer contract is unchanged: LEAN_PATH=$(cat /usr/lib/lean/pkgs/LEAN_PATH) lean ….
  • Pins fail closed. build.sh refuses a mathlib package whose tag differs from the inputRev in the pinned Aeneas source's lake-manifest.json, or whose 8 Lake dependency revisions differ from Aeneas's. Today they are identical: the same 9 tarballs with the same sha256, checked on main after aeneas chain → 2026-10-30: aeneas ab34bd2, charon 0.1.304, aeneas-latest ab34bd2, nightly 2026-09-17 (unchanged) #1271.

Why plain lean and not lake

Lake cannot reuse an installed Mathlib:

  1. Lake decides "up to date" from per-module .trace files (SavedTrace.replayIfUpToDate', Lake v4.35.0 Build/Common.lean). A missing trace means .outOfDate, and lake rebuilds. mathlib: all of Mathlib v4.35.0, built from source offline #1244's build.sh deletes every *.trace, *.hash and *.log.json before installing. So require mathlib pointed at the installed tree rebuilds all 8,625 modules, into a read-only path.
  2. Dropping require mathlib and setting LEAN_PATH does not work either. Lake 4.35 skips an import that no workspace package owns (fetchImportInfo: n = 0 → return s), but it runs each lean with LEAN_PATH set to the empty string (compileLeanModule's leanPath := [], Build/Actions.lean). So lean cannot find Mathlib.

The alternative would be for #1244 to install the traces too. That would also need the mathlib sources and the proofwidgets JS build state in aeneas-latest, and it would tie Aeneas to lake's input-hash details. Plain lean is simpler. build.sh parses each Aeneas module header with lean --deps-json and writes one make rule per module (olean ← source + local imports' oleans). Then make -j2 runs lean -R . -Dweak.linter.dupNamespace=false -o … -i …, which is what lake ran: upstream's only build option is that package leanOptions. build.sh fails if upstream's leanOptions line changes, if its lakefile starts setting moreLeanArgs / buildType / …, or if lakefile.lean is gone. It also fails if any built module lacks its .olean.server, .olean.private or .ir.

Tests

  • imports_aeneas: unchanged.
  • imports_full_mathlib (new): import Aeneas + import Mathlib.Analysis.SpecialFunctions.Pow.Real, a module outside Aeneas's old closure, with a Real.rpow_one proof. It shows that all of Mathlib is reachable through the same LEAN_PATH.

Verification

Re-verified 2026-11-04 against #1244's split layout (before the 2026-11-05 round above, which is not built locally). Each run used min session exec <s> -- min package build … aeneas-latest (in-box, local pool) in a fresh activate. Sessions were destroyed afterwards.

Which tree. The runs used #1244's head 99fc372e with this branch's packages/aeneas-latest/ (byte-identical to the PR head). They did not use the PR head itself. Merging main brings in tzdata 2026f (#1215), linux_headers 6.12.115 (#1272) and a perl change (#1233), which change base and so mathlib-oleans' spec hash. The build-bot's mathlib-oleans artifact (built at 99fc372e) is therefore a cache miss at the PR head, and a session there started compiling Mathlib from source. I stopped it rather than spend ~35 min on the laptop. The main merge touches nothing aeneas-latest reads. The build-bot's own run on this PR is the PR-head check, and it will compile mathlib-oleans for the new base first.

run time result
build, 99fc372e + this package, --rebuild 3m20s fetching mathlib, fetching mathlib-oleans (artifact cache, no Mathlib compile), built 266 Aeneas modules (every one with .olean.server/.olean.private/.ir), 1,597 files, 191,098 KB, mathlib: mathlib 4.35.0, build finished
min check --packages aeneas-latest 6s all checks Pass, including standalone tests...Pass (imports_aeneas + imports_full_mathlib)
control 1: test imports Mathlib.Analysis.SpecialFunctions.Pow.RealNOPE (read over the socket) 3s standalone tests...Fail: imports_full_mathlib … had exit code 1, object file '/usr/lib/lean/mathlib/mathlib/lib/Mathlib/Analysis/SpecialFunctions/Pow/RealNOPE.olean' … does not exist. The real test therefore resolves through mathlib-oleans' tree
control 3: mathlib removed from build_deps and runtime_deps, --rebuild 4s fails: sed: can't read /usr/share/mathlib/MANIFEST: No such file or directory → exit 2 at the pin check

Control 2 (mathlib dropped from build_deps only) was not run locally; 52240d1 makes that the recipe, so the build-bot run is its check.

Earlier (2026-11-03, pre-split b09d6d4f): a first build with Mathlib compiled in-session took 63 min in total, and a cached-Mathlib rebuild of aeneas-latest took 2m01s.

The build has no needs, so the sandbox grants it no network.

Size: the aeneas-latest artifact is now 191,098 KB / 1,597 files: Aeneas only, where it used to carry Aeneas plus the Mathlib closure slice and its deps. The closure grows by the whole mathlib + mathlib-oleans pair (≈6.0 GiB: Mathlib 6,003,144 KB + deps 280,702 KB). That is the price of "all of Mathlib importable", and it is shared with anyone who installs mathlib.

Consumers that must change

  • gominimal/loadout-fv-lab loadout.toml: LEAN_PATH is a static copy of the old file, naming /usr/lib/lean/pkgs/{mathlib,batteries,aesop,Qq,proofwidgets,plausible,LeanSearchClient,importGraph}/lib. Those directories no longer exist. Its new value is the exact file this build writes. Since 6cf38b5 mathlib orders its entries LC_ALL=C (LeanSearchClient and Qq right after mathlib):

    LEAN_PATH = "/usr/lib/lean/pkgs/aeneas/lib:/usr/lib/lean/mathlib/mathlib/lib:/usr/lib/lean/mathlib/LeanSearchClient/lib:/usr/lib/lean/mathlib/Qq/lib:/usr/lib/lean/mathlib/aesop/lib:/usr/lib/lean/mathlib/batteries/lib:/usr/lib/lean/mathlib/importGraph/lib:/usr/lib/lean/mathlib/plausible/lib:/usr/lib/lean/mathlib/proofwidgets/lib"

Its aeneas-latest comment ("+ its Mathlib closure") and examples/aeneas/verify (ls /usr/lib/lean/pkgs) s 8000 hould be reworded. Land the loadout change together with this package update: either value is wrong for the other tree. gominimal/loadout-fv-lab#1 (draft, branch mathlib-cvc5ff, now 68d5647) sets exactly this LEAN_PATH, lists aeneas-latest and mathlib, and its fv-smoke compares the var with the installed file.

  • pkgs: nothing else reads /usr/lib/lean/pkgs. mathlib-oleans keeps its own root (usr/lib/lean/mathlib, not usr/lib/lean/pkgs). Its comment no longer says aeneas-latest ships Mathlib (it doesn't, after this PR); it now gives the general reason: a root of its own means no other package's per-file conflicts can split a module's files across two builds.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Build & Installation
    • Aeneas now builds against the installed Mathlib package and can compile its modules offline.
    • Builds verify that Lean, Mathlib, and dependency revisions match the pinned versions; mismatches stop the build.
    • Installed Aeneas includes its build output and a Lean search path that also includes Mathlib.
  • Tests
    • Added a standalone check that imports Aeneas alongside a Mathlib module outside Aeneas’s import chain.

bryan-minimal and others added 18 commits November 1, 2026 12:16
aeneas-latest ships only the ~1,200 Mathlib modules Aeneas imports, and
fetches even those from Mathlib's Azure cache. `import Mathlib`,
Mathematics in Lean, and anything under Real/Analysis/Topology fail
(`Mathlib/Tactic.olean does not exist`).

This package compiles every Mathlib module (8,625) with the lean we ship,
from sha256-pinned sources only: no `lake exe cache get`, no `needs`.
It reuses aeneas-latest's offline-lake mechanism and its mirrored
dependency tarballs (Mathlib v4.35.0's manifest pins the same commits).
Layout matches aeneas-latest (usr/lib/lean/pkgs/<pkg>/lib), with the
LEAN_PATH file under usr/share/mathlib.

The cache is to serve the prebuilt artifact, so the licences travel with
it: every pinned source's LICENSE (and any NOTICE; none exist today)
under usr/share/licenses/mathlib/<pkg>/, plus an inventory of the npm
packages bundled into ProofWidgets' prebuilt widget JS, generated from
its pinned package-lock.json. build.sh fails closed if a licence file is
missing, is not the licence build.ncl declares, or if the inventory was
generated from a different lockfile.

license_spdx now covers that embedded JS (ISC, BSD-3-Clause, CC-BY-4.0,
CC0-1.0, Unlicense on top of Apache-2.0 AND MIT); all permissive.
`redistributable = true` is explicit.

The minified widget bundles that ProofWidgets' oleans embed strip the
copyright notices MIT/ISC/BSD require. proofwidgets-js-NOTICE.txt
restores them: for each of the 281 production packages in the pinned
package-lock.json, name@version, declared licence and the verbatim
LICENSE/LICENCE/COPYING/NOTICE text from the exact npm tarball (each
verified against the lockfile's sha512 integrity; read as data, never
executed). Packages with no licence file, and texts that disagree with
the declared licence, are listed for review.

gen-proofwidgets-notice.py (stdlib only) regenerates it on a ProofWidgets
bump; output is deterministic. build.sh installs it as
usr/share/licenses/mathlib/proofwidgets/THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.txt and fails
closed if its recorded lockfile sha256 differs from the pinned lockfile.

…tory

proofwidgets-js-third-party.txt was produced by a one-off script; the
generator now has an --inventory mode for it, so a ProofWidgets bump
regenerates both files the build checks from one tool. The mode reads
the lockfile and, only for a package the lockfile declares no licence
for, the sha512-verified npm tarball's LICENSE (as data). It reproduces
the committed inventory byte-for-byte (fetching just webgl-constants
into a fresh dir); NOTICE mode output is unchanged.

… (review)

Both packages build mathlib, batteries, aesop, ... and a closure holding
both resolves a path conflict per file, so it could load a module's .olean
from one build and its .olean.server/.olean.private/.ir from the other.
Install this package's trees under usr/lib/lean/mathlib/<pkg>/lib; the
LEAN_PATH file (usr/share/mathlib/LEAN_PATH) points there, so consumers
are unchanged.

Also: drop coreutils (already in base), and replace the 1-2 h estimate
with the measured build-bot times (28.5 min amd64, 33.0 min arm64).
build_cost_multiple stays 8: the orchestrator treats it as a slot count,
matching LEAN_NUM_THREADS=8.

ProofWidgets' graphvizDisplay.js and index.js embed @hpcc-js/wasm 2.34.2's
WebAssembly build of Graphviz 15.0.0 (EPL-2.0; lib/vpsc CPL-1.0, compiled in
because with_ipsepcola defaults ON), with expat 2.8.1 and the Emscripten 6.0.0
runtime (MIT). @hpcc-js/wasm's npm tarball ships only its own Apache-2.0
LICENSE, so the npm-derived NOTICE missed it, and license_spdx said "nothing
copyleft" on a redistributable artifact.

- proofwidgets-wasm-NOTICE.txt: pins (hpcc-js-wasm wasm-v2.34.2 8b86e2f8,
vcpkg 2026.06.01, emsdk 6.0.0), the EPL/CPL source offer, and the four
licence texts verbatim. Installed as THIRD-PARTY-WASM-NOTICES.txt.
- build.sh refuses to package unless both bundles match the sha256 the
notice was checked against, so a ProofWidgets bump forces a re-check.
- license_spdx gains EPL-2.0 AND CPL-1.0; comments corrected.

Guard checked standalone: passes on the pinned bundles, fails when index.js
changes. Penrose's WebAssembly (@penrose/optimizer 3.2.0) was checked too:
all 46 crates are permissive.

16 of the 281 lockfile packages behind ProofWidgets' widget JS publish no
licence file in their npm tarball, so the NOTICE carried only their SPDX
id. CodeRabbit flagged the one that matters most: rbTree.js bundles
TransitionGroup/CSSTransitionGroup from @bkrem/react-transition-group
1.3.5, and BSD-3-Clause needs its copyright notice, conditions and
disclaimer to travel with the code.

gen-proofwidgets-notice.py now has a CURATED table keyed by name@version.
Each entry names a text committed under proofwidgets-js-licences/, pinned
by sha256 and annotated with the upstream URLs it came from, or marks the
package a rollup external. The default mode exits 1 and writes nothing if
a licence-less package has no entry, if a curated file's sha256 drifts, or
if an entry no longer matches the lockfile.

react-transition-group: the LICENSE at bkrem's tag v1.3.5 (2ee5bf85) and
at reactjs/react-transition-group tag v1.2.1 (f5ae1896), the v1 line it
forks, are byte-identical (sha256 8e51db30...).

Of the other 15: two are rollup externals (@leanprover/infoview and
infoview-api), and seven take a LICENSE from upstream at the matching
tag, or from bracketing tags that agree where no exact tag exists.
seedrandom has no licence file, so its entry excerpts the README's MIT
notice at tag 3.0.5. consola, maath, stats-gl, mj-context-menu and
railroad-diagrams 1.0.0 (CC0 per its README; the repo's MIT LICENSE came
in 2022) publish no licence text for the release. Their entries quote the
upstream licence statement verbatim and carry the SPDX standard text.
victory-vendor also picks up its vendored d3 licences from the verified
tarball.

The package-lock.json sha256 line is unchanged, so build.sh's guard still
holds, and the --inventory output is byte-identical.

…ffer

The EPL-2.0/CPL-1.0 source offer in proofwidgets-wasm-NOTICE.txt pointed
only at upstream hosting. Copies are now on the public mirror (create-only,
each sha256 checked after upload via its public URL):

  graphviz-15.0.0.tar.xz 937fe475... (release tarball; matches Graphviz's
                                        published .sha256)
graphviz-15.0.0.tar.gz dfa5be5c... (GitLab tag archive the notice already
                                        cites; commit id 8080495d = tag 15.0.0)
  hpcc-systems/hpcc-js-wasm/hpcc-js-wasm-8b86e2f.tar.gz de9e168b...
                                       (the wasm-v2.34.2 build recipe)

The notice lists them with full sha256s. build.ncl's licence comment says
why: the corresponding-source check probes only this package's Source
URLs, which are all mirrored, so it reports mathlib as "mirrored" without
seeing source compiled into a bundled blob.

penroseCanvas.js and penroseDisplay.js embed @penrose/optimizer 3.2.0's
Rust WebAssembly. Its npm tarball has no licence file, and the npm-derived
NOTICE cannot see the crates compiled into the blob, so nalgebra 0.31.1
(declared BSD-3-Clause) and the rest shipped without their notices.

gen-proofwidgets-wasm-notice.py builds proofwidgets-penrose-wasm-NOTICE.txt:
- crate set = normal-dependency closure of the penrose-optimizer cdylib for
  wasm32-unknown-unknown (penrose v3.2.0 Cargo.lock plus each crate's
Cargo.toml; proc-macros and build/dev deps excluded and listed), plus the
Rust 1.71.1 std's registry crates for the rustc in the wasm's producers
  section: 24 + 5 crates, each .crate checked against its lock checksum;
- cross-checked against the wasm's name section: a crate whose code the
  linker kept but the walk missed fails the run;
- verbatim root licence files from each .crate, or a curated text pinned by
  sha256 (ts-rs ships none; nalgebra's Apache-2.0 LICENSE plus its
  pre-relicensing BSD-3-Clause notice; Rust's COPYRIGHT/LICENSE-*). A crate
with no text, or a stale curated entry, fails the run.

build.sh pins both penrose bundles' sha256 the same way as the Graphviz ones,
installs THIRD-PARTY-WASM-PENROSE-NOTICES.txt, and refuses to package if
any widget bundle embedding WebAssembly is pinned by neither notice.

Every notice or recipe edit to mathlib changed its spec hash and recompiled
all of Mathlib (~35 min on build-bot, ~45 min in a local box). Now:

- mathlib-oleans: the nine sha256-pinned Sources (sources.ncl) + lean +
base, `lake build Mathlib`, the module-completeness check, and the install
under usr/lib/lean/mathlib/<pkg>/lib. It also records what it compiled
  (usr/share/mathlib-oleans: version, lean-toolchain, lake-manifest.json,
the sha256 of ProofWidgets' package-lock.json and every widget bundle its
oleans embed). LEAN_NUM_THREADS is the `lean_num_threads` build arg
(default 8), and build_cost_multiple takes the same value.
- mathlib: imports the same sources.ncl, depends on mathlib-oleans
(runtime, so consumers get the oleans at unchanged paths), refuses
sources/toolchain/manifest/bundles that differ from what the oleans were
compiled from, then writes LEAN_PATH, MANIFEST, lake-manifest.json and
every licence and notice, with the existing pin checks. Seconds.

A notice or mathlib/build.sh edit changes mathlib's spec hash only;
mathlib-oleans' is unchanged on both arches.

At 8 jobs build-bot took 31.3 min (amd64) and 33.8 min (arm64), barely
faster than a 6-vCPU box: the build is capped by the job count, not by the
machine. Memory is the only resource more jobs could exhaust, and the
res-server sandbox sets no memory.max or CPU quota (only a cpu.weight), so
size by measured RSS: 2.8 GiB peak per lean x 32 = ~90 GiB of 360 GiB,
x 24 = ~67 GiB of 192 GiB, under half of either shared builder.

build_cost_multiple follows (the orchestrator caps it at its per-request
pool, 23 slots on c4a-standard-48). Thread count is not in the bytes: 4, 6
and 8 jobs gave identical output trees.

…e notices (review)

- mathlib-oleans now installs the same licences and third-party notices as
mathlib, under usr/share/licenses/mathlib-oleans (new `licenses` output).
One source: packages/mathlib/notices.ncl lists install-licences.sh and the
four notice files; both build.ncl import it and both build.sh run the
script, which holds the pin checks that were inline in mathlib's build.sh.
- proofwidgets-wasm-NOTICE.txt: the Graphviz wasm's Emscripten 6.0.0 runtime,
itemised from the decoded wasmBinary: musl (COPYRIGHT verbatim), libc++,
  libc++abi, libunwind (-fwasm-exceptions) and compiler-rt (LICENSE.TXT),
dlmalloc (public domain). license_spdx adds Apache-2.0 WITH LLVM-exception.
Names the installed THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.txt, not the repo file name.
- gen-proofwidgets-wasm-notice.py: the witness fails on zero crate roots.
- gen-proofwidgets-notice.py: --inventory fails (nothing written) on a
package whose licence it cannot resolve; default mode calls tarball_for.
  Both outputs regenerate byte-identical.
- Refusal messages name the command or action that fixes them.
- Drop the unused Source import from both build.ncl; comments describe the
  code, not the split's history.
- mathlib-oleans: arm64 lean_num_threads 24 -> 16 (24 reserved the whole
  23-slot arm64 pool). amd64 stays 32.

…s split

`mathlib` is now the thin layer (LEAN_PATH, MANIFEST, lake-manifest.json,
licences) and pulls in `mathlib-oleans` as a runtime dep. Paths are
unchanged, so build.sh's pin checks and LEAN_PATH composition stand;
comments now say which package provides what.

The package declares Mathlib, Make, and jq dependencies. Its documentation describes version and manifest checks and the generated LEAN_PATH. A standalone test imports Aeneas and a Mathlib module outside Aeneas’s import closure.
Pinned input checks and dependency discovery
packages/aeneas-latest/build.sh
The script checks Lean, Mathlib, and manifest revisions. It parses local module dependencies and generates Make rules, stopping on unsupported build inputs or parse errors.
Aeneas compilation and installation
packages/aeneas-latest/build.sh
The script builds Aeneas with Make, checks for required olean sidecars, and installs Aeneas outputs. It writes a manifest and sets Aeneas paths before Mathlib paths.

Aeneas now builds against the packaged Mathlib. The build was not run locally for the latest round, and one earlier notice-validation concern in the Mathlib package is still open. Both are bounded risks; confirm the build-bot result before merging.

Remove the redundant mathlib entry from build_deps.

mathlib is also in runtime_deps (Line 102). The repository guideline says all runtime_deps entries are injected into the build environment. The guideline also says an identical build_deps entry is not needed. packages/mathlib/build.ncl already follows this rule for mathlib-oleans, so the two packages are now inconsistent.

The PR description says the control run with mathlib removed only from build_deps was not rerun. Run that control before you drop the entry.

Scope matches the title and the body. The diff also carries all of #1244 (mathlib, mathlib-oleans), as the body says. git log origin/main shows no history for those paths, so #1244 must merge first. Clobber none: the history of packages/aeneas-latest ends at #1271 on the main side, and this branch builds on it. Correctness I found no defect that breaks the build or the consumer contract. The pin checks fail closed, the generated Makefile is correct, and the exit 1 in the while pipeline does stop the script under set -e. Nothing else in packages/, stacks/ or .github/ reads /usr/lib/lean/pkgs. The inventory licences and the crate table agree with license_spdx. The findings are stale comments, one narrow option guard, a pin check that reads a copy of the manifest, and error text. CodeRabbit's open thread on install-licences.sh:104 is not repeated here. Not checked: I did not build anything. I did not read upstream lakefile.lean, because the fetch was denied and the source tarball is in a staging bucket. So LEANFLAGS is not compared with upstream, and I do not know if the tarball ships its own lake-manifest.json. I could not confirm min package build --rebuild, because no CLI definition is in this repo. The body says the verified runs used 99fc372e, not the PR head, and it reports no two-build reproducibility diff for the new plain-lean build. gitleaks and trivy did not run. A targeted rg over the diff found no credentials, and no dependency manifest moved.

low · This guard does not check the one option that LEANFLAGS copies. It greps four names, and leanOptions is not one of them. If an Aeneas bump adds or changes a package leanOptions entry, the guard passes and lean compiles without that option. The grep also returns 2 if upstream moves to lakefile.toml, and if treats that as no match, so the guard passes without a check. Compare the leanOptions text with the expected value, and fail if lakefile.lean is missing. This guard is the only one of its kind in the repo, so the fix is local.

Fixed in 52240d1.

  • The guard now compares the leanOptions line with the expected text exactly: leanOptions := #[⟨weak.linter.dupNamespace, false⟩]. A changed, added or removed option fails, as does a second leanOptionsline. Each failure says to mirror the change in the Makefile'sLEANFLAGS` and then update the expected text.
  • It also fails first if lakefile.lean is missing or a lakefile.toml appears, so grep's exit 2 can no longer pass as "no match".

I checked it against the real lakefile.lean from the pinned tarball (passes) and 7 negative controls (all fail), under sh and dash. The controls: option value changed, option added, a second leanOptions line, option removed, lakefile.toml present, lakefile.lean missing, moreLeanArgs added.

low · The pin check reads a copy of the manifest and not the manifest of the pinned Aeneas source. Line 39 overwrites the tarball's lake-manifest.json with the Local file before the check runs. An Aeneas bump that changes the tarball sha256 and forgets the Local file passes both pin checks against old pins. Lake used this copy before, but nothing in the build needs it now. Read the manifest from the tarball, or cmp the two files first. I could not open the staging tarball, so confirm that it ships this file.

Fixed in 52240d1. I confirmed the staging tarball ships backends/lean/lake-manifest.json (identical to the Local today). build.sh no longer copies the Local over it. The tag and Lake-revision checks read the tarball's file, and that file is the one installed under usr/share/aeneas-latest/.

I kept the Local rather than dropping it. pkgmgr's lean consumer check (data/toolchain_constraints.toml, from pkgs#999) reads packages/aeneas-latest/lake-manifest.json for Aeneas's Lean version when it vets a lean bump. So build.sh now cmps the Local against the tarball's file first, and refuses with the next step if they differ. A bump that changes the tarball sha256 and forgets the Local now fails, where before it passed against the old pins.

I ran the step-2 block on its own against the real tarball manifest and Mathlib v4.35.0's manifest. It passes. A stale Local, a tag mismatch and a changed batteries revision each fail.

low · The last sentence of this comment is false after this PR. It says the test checks that the two trees agree on every shared module. aeneas-latest now installs only Aeneas's own oleans, so the trees share no module and the test cannot check that. The phrase is left from the old layout. Remove the sentence. The PR body repeats the claim.

Removed in 52240d1, along with the "old cache-get slice" phrase in the same comment. The test comment now only says Real.rpow's module is outside Aeneas's imports. The PR body claim is gone too.

low · This comment describes aeneas-latest as it was before this PR. It says both packages build mathlib, batteries and aesop, but aeneas-latest now builds only Aeneas. This is one of five such comments. mathlib-oleans/build.sh:92-95 says "both ship mathlib/batteries/aesop/...". build.sh:11-12 says "Unlike aeneas-latest, nothing is fetched", but aeneas-latest fetches nothing now. build.ncl:65 says "Offline-lake mechanism as in aeneas-latest", but aeneas-latest no longer uses lake. sources.ncl:7-9 says aeneas-latest vendors these pins, but it now only checks them. Update all five in this PR. The body says the disjoint-root comment is still right, but its reason no longer applies.

All five fixed on #1244's branch (6cf38b5), so they read correctly with or without this PR merged:

  • mathlib-oleans/build.ncl output comment, and build.sh step 7 (was "both ship mathlib/batteries/aesop/..."): both now give the general reason for a root of its own. Per-file conflict resolution would split a module's files across two builds if another package ever installed the same module under one root. Neither names aeneas-latest's contents any more.
  • build.sh header: "Nothing is fetched: no lake exe cache get". The comparison is gone.
  • build.ncl "Offline-lake mechanism as in aeneas-latest": now "Offline-lake mechanism adopted from nixpkgs…".
  • sources.ncl: no longer says aeneas-latest vendors the pins. It says the tarballs sit under aeneas-latest/ in staging only because that package mirrored the same pins first.

This PR's body now says the same.

low · This instruction leaves out mathlib-oleans. A maintainer who reads it during a lean bump updates three packages, and then mathlib/build.sh refuses the version mismatch. low · Both refusals state the mismatch and give no next step. A maintainer who bumps Aeneas reads them in the build log and cannot tell which package to change. A refusal must give the next step, and the lean-toolchain refusal at line 31 does. Add one line to each. For example: "Move the aeneas pin in build.ncl to a commit that requires this Mathlib, or bump mathlib-oleans and mathlib." I graded this low because only a version bump reaches these lines.

low · The order of LEAN_PATH comes from a shell glob with no fixed locale. The value in the PR body is aesop, batteries, importGraph, LeanSearchClient, plausible, proofwidgets, Qq, which is not byte order. Byte order puts LeanSearchClient and Qq first. So the shipped file depends on the collation in the sandbox. The loadout copies this exact string, and fv-smoke compares it. Other scripts in this PR fix the order with LC_ALL=C sort and LC_ALL=C ls. Write the order explicitly, or use LC_ALL=C here. Nothing fails today if the sandbox locale stays the same. The MANIFEST loop at line 66 has the same shape.

Confirmed and fixed on #1244's branch (6cf38b5). A glob over the same directory names under LANG=en_US.UTF-8 gives exactly the PR body's order, so the shipped value depended on the sandbox locale. mathlib/build.sh now builds the package list once with LC_ALL=C ls (directories only), and both the LEAN_PATH loop and the MANIFEST loop (your line-66 point) use it. The value changes order: mathlib first, then LeanSearchClient, Qq, aesop, batteries, importGraph, plausible, proofwidgets. The directories are the same, and each module lives in exactly one of them, so resolution doesn't change.

I updated both PR bodies with the new string. gominimal/loadout-fv-lab#1 (mathlib-cvc5ff) had the old order, so it now has the new one (68d5647, pushed, no force), and its body notes that no build has logged the new order yet. fv-smoke's "LEAN_PATH matches" line is the check once build-bot has built it.

nit · The first half of this comment tells the history of the change: "This package used to fetch...". That belongs in the PR body. State the current design only: Mathlib comes from the mathlib package, compiled from pinned sources, and this package compiles only Aeneas's modules. mathlib-oleans/build.ncl:61-63 already records why the Azure cache is not used. The phrase "the old cache-get slice stopped there" at line 129 has the same problem.

nit · mathlib is also in runtime_deps, so this build_deps entry changes nothing. AGENTS.md says a runtime_deps entry needs no identical build_deps entry, and the PR body confirms the build works without it. mathlib/build.ncl:45 follows that rule for mathlib-oleans, in a one-line comment. Removed in 52240d1. mathlib is only in runtime_deps now, and the path note moved there, with a one-line comment in build_deps. That matches mathlib/build.ncl. On the control run CodeRabbit asked for: I didn't run it locally. 6cf38b5 re-keys mathlib-oleans, which isn't cached yet, and a local Mathlib compile is ~45 min. The build-bot run of this head is that control: it builds with mathlib only in runtime_deps. Control 3 in the body (removing it from both lists fails at once on /usr/share/mathlib/MANIFEST) shows the path is load-bearing, so a broken injection would fail loudly, not silently.

- install-licences.sh: every `<bundle>.js sha256:` pin in either WASM

- mathlib-oleans/build.sh: lean_num_threads is the build-bot target; the
count run is min(target, CPUs, free memory / 1.5 GiB), so a local build
on a 16 GiB laptop runs ~8 jobs, not 16. Bytes do not depend on it.
- mathlib-oleans/build.sh: install-licences.sh runs before `lake build`
(it needs only the unpacked sources), so a stale notice fails in seconds.
- The completeness checks require each module's .ir (mathlib-oleans per
  module, mathlib by count).
- mathlib/build.sh: LEAN_PATH and MANIFEST order is LC_ALL=C, not the

- Repo text names install-licences.sh; shipped text says "the package

…ons guard, refusals name the next step (review)

- The pin check reads backends/lean/lake-manifest.json from the pinned
aeneas tarball, not the Local copy (which used to overwrite it). The
Local stays, because pkgmgr's lean consumer check reads it; build.sh
now refuses a Local that differs from the tarball's.
- The lakefile guard compares the `leanOptions` line (the option LEANFLAGS
copies) with the expected text and fails if lakefile.lean is missing or a
lakefile.toml appears, instead of passing on grep's exit 2.
- Every refusal names the next step; the lean-bump message names
  mathlib-oleans too.
- Comments describe the current design only: no "used to fetch" history,
no "two trees agree" (the trees share no module now).
- `mathlib` leaves build_deps: it is a runtime dep, and runtime deps are in
the build (AGENTS.md). Its path note moves to runtime_deps.

Scope matches the title. The diff is the aeneas-latest change plus the #1244 commits, as the PR body says. Clobber I found none. Every line removed from aeneas-latest traces to the move away from lake and the Azure cache. The path-scoped git log command was denied in this run, so this conclusion comes from the diff and the top 8 commits only. Correctness The pin check, the lakefile guard, the Makefile generation and the error paths under set -e read correctly. base supplies cmp, diff and find, so dropping toolchain loses no tool. The licence expression matches the declared inventory. The lockfile hash is the same in both npm notices. The main open point is the word "offline": lean declares needs.internet, and AGENTS.md says that grant reaches every build with lean in its closure. The other findings are comment and printed-text defects. Not reviewable cadical in build_deps is now redundant, because lean has it in runtime_deps. Its comment is stale too, but those lines are unchanged context. Not checked I did not build anything. I could not read the staged tarballs, so the upstream lakefile.lean and the bundle hashes were not compared with their sources. The sandbox network code is not in this repository. gitleaks was not run. A targeted search of the diff for credentials found nothing.

#
# FROM SOURCE, OFFLINE. No `lake exe cache get`: Mathlib's Azure cache is an
# unverified prebuilt (its files are keyed by a hash of their INPUTS, nothing
# checks the bytes that come back). This package has no `needs`.

low · The offline claim rests on this package having no needs, but lean is in its closure and lean declares needs with dns and internet (packages/lean/build.ncl:51-55). AGENTS.md says needs.internet gives network access to the build of everything that has the package in its closure. So the sandbox probably does not block network use here. Only LAKE_NO_CACHE and the empty RESERVOIR_API_URL keep lake offline. The same claim is at packages/aeneas-latest/build.sh:5 ("No lake, no network"), at packages/aeneas-latest/build.ncl:29, and in the PR body. Nothing in the build fetches today, so the defect is a guarantee that is not enforced. Confirm the behaviour with a network probe in the build, then correct the claim or remove the grant. I could not read the sandbox code, so this rests on AGENTS.md.

# Upstream's lakefile (lean_lib «Aeneas» {}, package leanOptions
# weak.linter.dupNamespace=false) is what LEANFLAGS mirrors; fail if it
# changes the option LEANFLAGS copies or grows build options this recipe
# does not reproduce. A lakefile.toml would be a new format: fail on that too.

low · This comment describes the upstream lakefile as lean_lib «Aeneas» {} plus one option. The diff removes a comment that says the same lakefile precompiles AeneasMeta into a dynlib unless CI is set. So the lakefile has one more build setting. Plain lean matches the old CI=1 result, so the output is not wrong. But the reason for that match is now gone, and the guard list at line 119 has no precompileModules. Keep that fact in this comment, and add precompileModules to the guard if the conditional allows it. I could not read the lakefile in the staged tarball.

if grep -q "$opt" lakefile.lean; then
echo "ERROR: upstream lakefile.lean now sets '$opt'; mirror it in the Makefile's LEANFLAGS above, then drop" >&2
echo " '$opt' from this list." >&2

low · A maintainer reads these two refusals in a build log and cannot use "the Makefile's LEANFLAGS above". No Makefile is in the repository, because build.sh generates it. "Above" points at the script, which is not on the screen, and want_opts is a shell variable. Name the file to edit: LEANFLAGS in packages/aeneas-latest/build.sh. The sibling at line 107 already says "in build.sh". The two messages here are the only instances.

low · This refusal states the missing file and gives no next step. The PR body says every refusal names the next step, but this one and the refusal at line 81 do not. A maintainer who bumps Lean reads them and does not know what to change. Add one line to each, for example that the Lean flags in LEANFLAGS must produce these files. mathlib-oleans/build.sh:130 has the same gap.

"ProofWidgets4 commits its infoview JavaScript prebuilt (widget/js/*.js,\n"
"bundled by rollup from npm and minified by terser), and its .olean files\n"
"embed it via `include_str`, so the `mathlib` package redistributes it. The\n"
"minified bundles strip most copyright notices; they are reproduced here.\n\n"

low · The generated notice says the mathlib package redistributes the bundles. Since the split, mathlib has no oleans and mathlib-oleans ships them. The same notice is also installed under usr/share/licenses/mathlib-oleans, so a person who reads it there gets the wrong package name. This is a pattern of three: proofwidgets-js-NOTICE.txt:6, proofwidgets-wasm-NOTICE.txt:7 and proofwidgets-penrose-wasm-NOTICE.txt:7, with its generator at gen-proofwidgets-wasm-notice.py:541. Change the wording in both generators and in the hand-assembled notice, then regenerate the files.

low · This refusal puts the whole notice procedure in one sentence of about 60 words, with a semicolon chain and nested parentheses. A maintainer on a ProofWidgets bump reads it in a build log and cannot follow it as steps. Keep one short sentence here and point to a numbered procedure in the notice file or in a comment. Shorter semicolon chains are at line 45 and at mathlib/build.sh:24.

Resolve packages/aeneas-latest/build.ncl: keep this PR's build_deps (make, jq;
no cache tool, so no toolchain/leangz) and take #757's cadical comment.

Guard the full lakefile configuration.

A future Aeneas library globs setting can add modules that the fixed Aeneas.olean build does not include. The current guard would not detect that change.

Consider checking the whole lakefile against a known-good hash or allowlist. Preserve the existing precompileModules setting on AeneasMeta.
