What and why

The browser flow of min auth login used to answer the browser as soon as the callback carried a code, before min exchanged it. The page said Return to the terminal to finish signing in. even when the exchange then failed. Its failure pages gave no next step, and nothing ever sent the user to install the gominimal App. Without an installation, the token reaches no private repository.

This change makes the browser page the place where sign-in finishes (crates/minimal/src/cmd/auth.rs):

  • The response is held until four steps finish: the code exchange, GET /user, GET /user/installations with the new token, and the keychain write. The network part is bounded by 15 s (FINISH_TIMEOUT). A slow or failed exchange renders the "not finished" page, never a false success.
  • One self-contained HTML document for every page: the inline minimal mark (one copy filled with currentColor), a centered card, a status glyph, and light/dark via prefers-color-scheme. Commands render in a monospace chip with user-select: all. The page has no JavaScript and makes no external requests. Its body holds no token, code or state. Every name from GitHub is HTML-escaped.
  • Headers: Content-Security-Policy: default-src 'none'; style-src 'unsafe-inline'; img-src data:, Referrer-Policy: no-referrer, Cache-Control: no-store, X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff.
  • The terminal and the page use the same sentences. They share constants, and the page renders backticked spans as chips. INSTALL_NOTE is gone. In its place the terminal prints a statement the code proves: the accounts that have an installation, or the install URL as one instruction. The device flow prints the same line. It makes no other device-flow change.
  • docs/reference/cli-min.md gains one paragraph on this.

The install return: a design decision

With no installation, the listener stays up for GitHub's return from the install, within the existing BROWSER_TIMEOUT (5 min). This flow does not depend on GitHub passing state through the install page, and it never exchanges a code that arrives on the install return. Such a code was issued without our PKCE challenge, and the sign-in is already held. Any callback in this phase is handled the same way. Typically that is GitHub's return with setup_action=install and installation_id. The handler re-reads GET /user/installations with the token min already holds. Then it renders the installed page from that answer, picking the installation named by installation_id when the list has it. A callback that carries a different state gets the expired-link page. One without state is accepted, because all it can trigger is that read with our own token. For the same reason the install link carries no state, which also keeps state out of the page body, as the issue requires.

The install return no longer reaches min. The App's registered callback is http://127.0.0.1/callback, with no port, and on 2026-10-30 GitHub's install redirect went to port 80 (ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED). The App now has user authorization during installation turned off and its Setup URL set to https://minimal.dev. gominimal/inbox#1185 tracks the page that replaces it. So the wait also re-reads the installations every 5 s (INSTALL_POLL), and that re-read is how the terminal notices an install. When an installation appears, the terminal prints the installed line and the command exits. The callback handler for the install return stays, but under the current App settings nothing sends the browser to it.

The wait starts only when min read the installations and the list was empty. After a failed read the App may already be installed, so the command prints the install URL and exits. If the wait reaches the 5-minute deadline, the terminal prints:

Stopped waiting. `min` did not see an installation of the Minimal GitHub App.
One more step: choose which repositories your boxes can reach at https://github.com/apps/gominimal/installations/new.

Verification

  • just fix: clean.

  • just ci (macOS, darwin scope): pass. ci: local PR gates green, 1531 tests passed. Its clippy-strict step reported changed crates not covered here: minimal.

  • just clippy-strict: clean, but on macOS its scope is -p minvmd -p boxes -p bep, so it did not cover minimal, the only crate changed. It has no hits to report.

  • just test-cross: its cross clippy --workspace --exclude minvmd --all-targets -D warnings step passed. Its cross test step failed in an unrelated crate before it reached minimal: checkouts tests::accepts_a_cached_clone_whose_origin_is_rewritten_by_insteadof and tests::refuses_a_cached_clone_of_another_remote_even_under_insteadof both panicked at crates/checkouts/src/lib.rs:1504 with git config insteadOf failed. That is the container's git config --file, and this branch does not touch that crate.

  • So I ran the recipe's own test command scoped to this module: DOCKER_DEFAULT_PLATFORM=linux/amd64 CROSS_CONTAINER_OPTS="--env HOME=/tmp" cross test -p minimal --lib --target aarch64-unknown-linux-musl --locked -- cmd::auth. Result: 23 passed, 0 failed. That includes auth_login_completes_browser_pkce_flow and these new tests:

    • browser_page_names_the_installed_accounts
    • browser_page_offers_choose_repositories_then_confirms_the_install: the install return, with no state and a code, renders the installed page, and /login/oauth/access_token is called exactly once, with the sign-in's code.
    • an_install_the_browser_does_not_return_from_ends_the_wait
    • browser_page_says_not_finished_when_the_exchange_fails
    • browser_page_says_cancelled_and_not_approved
    • browser_pages_for_expired_link_and_unknown_path_keep_the_listener
    • browser_page_escapes_names_from_github
    • device_sign_in_without_installation_prints_the_install_url
    • unread_installations_do_not_start_the_wait
    • the_install_wait_gives_the_install_url_at_the_deadline

Each page test pins the status, the four security headers, the heading, the inline mark, and the command chip. It also checks that the body has no <script, <img, <link, url(, code, state= or token.

  • No test covers the 15 s timeout path, because it would add 15 s to the suite.

  • just lint-prose docs/reference/cli-min.md: the added paragraph has zero alerts. The file's existing alerts are untouched.

Implements gominimal/inbox#1183

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • min auth login now reports GitHub App installations after device and browser sign-in.
    • If no installation is found, the CLI provides an installation link and waits up to five minutes. You can interrupt the wait; sign-in remains saved, and the link is provided if waiting ends without an installation.
    • Browser sign-in displays a page showing the outcome.
    • Installation lookup failures do not fail sign-in or trigger the installation wait.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the CLI reference with sign-in outcomes, installation links, and waiting behavior.

…choice

min auth login's browser flow now holds the browser's response until
the code exchange, the account read, the read of the App's
installations and the keychain write finish, bounded by 15 seconds.
Then it answers with a self-contained page for the real outcome:
signed in with installations, signed in with no installation (a
Choose repositories link to the App's install page), installed, not
finished (502), cancelled, an expired link (400) or not found (404).
Every failure page names min auth login as the next step.

With no installation, the listener stays up for GitHub's return from
the install, within the browser flow's 5 minutes. That return
re-reads the installations with the held token and never exchanges
the code it carries. A timer re-reads them too, so the terminal
finishes even when GitHub sends the browser to a port nothing
listens on.

The terminal prints the same sentences as the page: the installed
accounts, or the install URL as one instruction. This replaces the
generic install note. The device flow prints the same line.

A slow installation lookup can prevent browser sign-in from being saved, and a failed callback lookup can incorrectly tell users they have no installation. The sign-in failure should be resolved before merging.

The install return from github.com/apps/gominimal never reaches min: GitHub used the App's callback URL with no port and went to port 80 (ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED, checked 2026-10-30). The App setting is now fixed: user authorization during installation is off, and the Setup URL is https://minimal.dev for now. The page that replaces it is tracked in gominimal/inbox#1185. This PR's install-return handler and its 5 s installations re-read stay: the re-read is how the terminal notices an install.

…the wait stops

A failed read of the App's installations does not show that none exists,
so the browser sign-in no longer waits after one. At the deadline the
wait now says it stopped and gives the install URL again, instead of
exiting with no word.

Round 2 of 10 is on this pull request.

branch feat/auth-login-browser-page

round outcome job
1 pushed b3b3dea2
2 pushed 5ea6bb5f

Updated 2026-10-31T18:23:21.558Z.

The install wait now starts a fresh 5-minute deadline, as the docs say,
so a slow sign-in does not shorten it. The timer's re-read of the
installations is bounded by that deadline, so a slow GitHub answer
cannot hold the wait past it.

Round 1 of 10 on a /revise note, pushed as 82e744999f0a.

No test: line was run.

Review threads the coder judged:

  • 👍 valid — crates/minimal/src/cmd/auth.rs:432: The flow now resets browser.deadline to now + BROWSER_TIMEOUT before it prints the waiting line. The install wait gets a full 5 minutes, as the docs say.
  • 👍 valid — crates/minimal/src/cmd/auth.rs:442: The poll arm now wraps installed(...) in timeout_at(self.deadline, ..). A slow read stops at the deadline. New test: a_stalled_install_read_does_not_outlive_the_deadline.

After a browser sign-in with no installation, min auth login now waits a full 5 minutes for the install from the moment the wait starts, as docs/reference/cli-min.md says. A GitHub read that does not answer cannot keep the wait running past that deadline.

Notes from the agent: I did not change the docs. The paragraph already says the wait lasts up to 5 minutes for the installation, and the code now does that. I did not run just ci, just test-cross or just clippy-strict. The new test takes about 6 s because the first re-read happens INSTALL_POLL (5 s) after the wait starts. The callback arm of await_install still bounds its re-read only by FINISH_TIMEOUT. That arm holds a browser response, and under the current App settings nothing sends the browser to it.

Round 2 of 10 on a /revise note, pushed as 23aa2d38fb7e.

No test: line was run.

Review threads the coder judged:

  • 👍 valid — crates/minimal/src/cmd/auth.rs:448: An accept error in await_install now ends the wait. It logs the error, prints the stopped-waiting line and the install URL, and returns Ok.
  • 👎 invalid — crates/minimal/src/cmd/auth.rs:1027: The proposed fix does not stop a forger: any local page can add installation_id as easily as it omits state. A request without state starts only the read that the 5 s INSTALL_POLL timer already does with the same token. It exchanges no code. The terminal prints an account only when GitHub lists a re

When the callback listener fails to accept during the install wait, min auth login no longer exits non-zero after a saved sign-in. It prints Stopped waiting. ... and the install URL, the same lines as at the deadline, and exits 0.

Notes from the agent: No test covers the accept-error path. A unit test cannot easily make TcpListener::accept fail. The listener error goes to the log through tracing::warn. Thread PRRT_kwDOPdfcxM6yPI6i is judged invalid: the missing-state acceptance is the design decision that the PR body documents, and nothing in the code changed for it. Not run: just ci, just test-cross, just clippy-strict.

The poll arm of await_install already stops a slow installations read at
the deadline. The callback arm did not, so a callback near the deadline
could hold the wait for up to two FINISH_TIMEOUT periods. Wrap it in the
same timeout_at, and pin it with a stalled-API test on the callback.

Save the browser sign-in before reading installations.

finish runs read_sign_in, including list_installations, inside the 15-second timeout and calls save only afterward. If the installation request stalls, the timeout returns before read_sign_in can produce Installs::Unread, so the valid token and account are discarded. Read and save the account first, then read installations against the same deadline and map timeout or read errors to Installs::Unread.

The callback listener served any request on 127.0.0.1:<port>. A web page
that reaches it through DNS rebinding sends its own name in Host, and
during the install wait a callback reply names the signed-in account.
Read the Host header with the request line, and drop a request whose
Host is not the callback's own 127.0.0.1:<port> without a reply.

When the callback's re-read of the App's installations failed or was cut
short at the deadline, the held page said no installation exists. The
read did not show that. installed() now tells a failed read apart from an
empty list, and the callback answers a failed read with the Unread page,
as run_login does.
