feat(minimal): give a box re-created under its name an id of its own that redeems (T22) - #2584
Conversation
BEP-070: drive the CLI's registration against the real VM host tables and control server, re-creating one box name eight times. Each creation gets a version 7 id whose timestamp is the clock, whose random tail is fresh, and which the host's row and attachment hold.
… (T22) BEP-070: the e2e case destroys a grant box, starts a new one under the same name, and checks that min box audit names a new box id, that the new box's own value redeems, and that the destroyed box's copied value is refused in the new box. It needs the live proxy, so it is NOT RUN off macOS.

The tests are in the right place, and the e2e case has the right shape. But the mint they prove keeps a counter. BoxId::mint() calls Uuid::now_v7(), and the test checks only the low 32 bits because of that counter. Gatehouse §6.10 line 839 says the random fields are "random fills, never counters". Fix the mint (C1), then make the test check every random field (C2). The collision clause is not written and has no issue. Point its verify line at the minvmd test that owns the check (C3). Then record a macOS pass of the e2e case at this head (C4).

BEP-070: a stand-in host answers the CLI's registration with the exact refusal the VM host sends for a colliding mint. The activation fails on it, names the colliding id, and gets no box id. The host-side refusal stays proved by minvmd's colliding_box_id_refused.

Round 1 of 10 on the runtime's review findings, pushed as
Verify Review threads the coder judged:
Each box creation under one name gets a new host-minted UUIDv7 id, and a colliding id makes the CLI refuse the creation with a message that names the id. The e2e case checks that a box re-created under its old name redeems its new values and that the old values stay refused. That case runs only on macOS, so on this box it printed NOT RUN. Notes from the agent: Revise round 1. I added colliding_box_id_refuses_creation in crates/minimal/src/tests.rs. The minimal crate has no public way to force a colliding mint, because minvmd's register_client_box_as is private and minvmd is outside the layers. So the test uses a stand-in host on the control socket. That host replies with the exact AllocationError::CollidingBoxId text, and the test checks that the CLI refuses the activation and names the id. minvmd's colliding_box_id_refused proves the host-side refusal. To drive both halves in one test, a later task needs a test-support seam in crates/minvmd/src/box_registry.rs. The e2e case bep_box_recreated_under_its_name_redeems exited 0 but printed NOT RUN because it needs the macOS proxy. The macOS lane still owes that evidence. clippy -p minimal --all-targets reports no warning in tests.rs. |

The box id mint does not follow §6.10 line 839. The design says the random fields are random fills and never counters. BoxId::mint() calls Uuid::now_v7(), which keeps a counter, and the new test checks only the 32 bits that are random. Fix the mint in C1, and test all 74 random bits in C2. Name the minvmd collision test in the spec in C3. File the gap in the collision check in C4. Run the e2e leg on macOS in C5.

BoxId::mint now uses Uuid::new_v7 with a NoContext timestamp, so all 74 random bits of each id are fresh CSPRNG fills with no counter, as Gatehouse section 6.10 requires. The BoxId, mint and running docs say ids sort by mint millisecond, and the NET-129 restart test waits 2 ms between its two creations before it compares their ids. box_id_is_a_csprng_uuidv7_per_creation now checks all of rand_a and rand_b for distinct values and for no step 10000 of one between creations. The doc of colliding_box_id_refuses_creation says it proves the CLI half only, and the BEP-070 collision clause in the spec gains the minvmd colliding_box_id_refused verify line for the host half.

The mint fix conforms. BoxId::mint now uses NoContext, so all 74 random bits come from the OS CSPRNG with no counter, as Gatehouse §6.10 line 839 requires. The same line says that creation refuses an id that any retained record names. holds_box_id does not consult retained revocation records, and no issue owns that gap. C1 files the issue and makes the new spec verify line state its limit. C2 asks for an observed macOS run of the re-creation e2e case, because a not_run leg is open, and a correction to the stale PR body.

A colliding id refuses the creation, with the CLI half and the host half each named as a verify line in the spec. The e2e case that shows the re-created box redeems while the old values stay refused is unchanged this round and still owes its macOS run. Notes from the agent: Round 2 does C1 to C3 in one commit, 41684e5. C1: BoxId::mint uses Uuid::new_v7(Timestamp::now(NoContext)). The BoxId, mint and running docs say ids sort by mint millisecond. The NET-129 restart test waits 2 ms between creations. C2: the test checks rand_a and rand_b, and the counter comment is gone. C3: the spec gains the minvmd verify line, and the collision test doc says it proves the CLI half only. The files outside the layers (boxes/src/lib.rs, minimald box_manager.rs and box_actor/tests.rs, the spec) follow the directive's layer exception. Other comments still say 'creation order' (crates/minimald/src/store.rs:407, crates/minimal/src/cmd/box_audit.rs:66, crates/minvmd/src/box_registry.rs:1962). The directive did not name them, so I left them. clippy -p boxes shows 6 warnings in core/compose.rs and core/primitives.rs. They were there before this change. |
BoxId::mint waits for a fresh clock millisecond when the previous mint in this process used the same one. The random fields stay pure CSPRNG fills, and ids from one process sort in creation order again, which the NET-129 shared-port election relies on. The minimald doc and test edits from the earlier round return to main. box_id_is_a_csprng_uuidv7_per_creation no longer asserts that the 12-bit rand_a differs on every creation, a check that failed about once in 150 runs. The spec notes that the collision check does not read retained revocation records.

box_id_is_a_csprng_uuidv7_per_creation failed about 4 runs in 30. The panic was the registration expect, not an id check: minvmd refused the next creation of "web" as cancelled while its address was being assigned. The test dropped each held registration lease uncommitted. minvmd then withdrew the row on the lease thread, late, and that withdrawal raced the next registration under the name. The test now commits the lease, as an activation does, before its own withdrawal. It also asserts that the ids sort in creation order, and each id assertion prints the ids it compared.

Converted to a draft: something above needs a person before review. A box re-created under the name Notes from the agent: 1. CI panic: the job log excerpt in the directive does not include the panic text, and I have no access to the full job log. I reproduced the failure here with --stress-count 30: 4 of 30 runs failed. Every failure was the same panic, at the registration expect (crates/minimal/src/tests.rs:4682), not at an id assertion: "the real control server answers the registration: registering the box with the VM host daemon failed; the session does not start with the box unregistered. Caused by: the VM host daemon refused the box registration: the box's registration was cancelled while its address was being assigned". 2. Cause: register_box_for_activation holds a registration lease. The test dropped the lease uncommitted at the end of each loop iteration. minvmd's hold_registration_lease thread then withdrew the row under "web" later and bumped the name's withdrawal generation. That bump landed during the next creation's address allocation, so the host refused it as WithdrawnWhileAllocating. On a busy CI host the late thread runs later, so it fails more often there. The cause is in the test, not in BoxId::mint or minvmd. 3. Fix: the test commits the lease, as an activation does once the session is active, before its own withdrawal. All the property checks stay: UUIDv7 version and RFC 9562 variant, the timestamp inside the mint window, distinct ids, rand_a and rand_b. I also added the creation-order sort check. Each id assertion now prints the ids it compared, and the registration panic prints the creation number and the ids so far. The timestamp window check did not fail, so poin…[truncated] |

Each creation of a box under one name gets a host-minted UUIDv7 id of its own, and an id that collides with a held one refuses the creation. The unit tests prove this. The e2e case that redeems the new values and refuses the old ones is in scripts/session-e2e.sh, but it records NOT RUN on Linux. It still needs a run on the macOS lane, so that part of the proof is not delivered from this box. Notes from the agent: This round changes crates/boxes/src/lib.rs (BoxId::mint) only. That file is outside the task's layers, but earlier rounds of this pull request already changed it to remove the counter from the mint. The mint now loads LAST_MINT_MS before it reads the clock, so a stale clock reading never moves it backwards. On a backward clock step, the mint uses the millisecond after the last mint and does not wait. clippy -p boxes gives the same warning count as the previous head. The e2e case bep_box_recreated_under_its_name_redeems records NOT RUN on Linux. It needs the macOS lane with gvproxy and a GitHub sign-in. |
Take the millisecond after the last mint whenever the clock reading is not after it: a stale reading, the same millisecond, or a backward clock step. LAST_MINT_MS then only moves forward, and no mint waits for the clock to tick. Add tests for a stale reading behind the last mint and for back-to-back mints. Allow one second of lead in the UUIDv7 timestamp bound of box_id_is_a_csprng_uuidv7_per_creation, and link #2585 from the BEP-070 collision limit in the spec.

Proof
On a macOS lane with a GitHub sign-in, ./scripts/session-e2e.sh bep_box_recreated_under_its_name_redeems destroys a grant box, starts a new grant box under the same name, and shows three facts. First, 'min box audit ' names a different box id for each box. Second, the new box's own GH_TOKEN redeems ('gh api user' answers, and an admit record names a member). Third, the value copied from the destroyed box is refused in the new box with a cross_box refusal. On this Linux box the case is NOT RUN, so the proof is written but this run did not observe it. The test box_id_is_a_csprng_uuidv7_per_creation shows, with the real VM host tables, that each of eight creations under one name gets a new host-minted UUIDv7.
Notes from the agent: colliding_box_id_refuses_creation is not written. The collision refusal (AllocationError::CollidingBoxId) is in crates/minvmd/src/box_registry.rs. The only door that can present a fixed id is the private fn register_client_box_as. The registration request carries no box id, the public register functions always call mint_box_id(), and resume does not run the collision check. So from crates/minimal/src/tests.rs no test can force a colliding mint without a test-support door in minvmd, and that file is outside this task's layers. minvmd already has an equal test, colliding_box_id_refused, in crates/minvmd/src/box_registry.rs. A follow-up can either add a #[cfg(feature = "test-support")] pub wrapper for register_client_box_as so the minimal test can drive it, or move the spec's verify line to cargo nextest run -p minvmd colliding_box_id_refused. Also note: holds_box_id checks only live rows, kept creations and attachments, not the proxy's retained revocation records. The spec says 'any retained record'. The design relies on ids never returning, not on remembering spent ids, so this can be a spec-versus-code gap to check.
