fix(installer): stop a daemon left on an older build after the swaps, asking before ending sessions - #2338
Conversation
A client attached during an upgrade autospawns a replacement daemon the moment the pre-swap stop ends, and that daemon serves the old version from the binaries the run is about to replace. Stop once more, best-effort and --force, after every swap is done, so the daemon a run leaves is the one it just installed. Co-authored-by: Copilot <223556219+Copilot@users.noreply.github.com>

Main moved the daemon-stop helpers to a shared section and added a post-swap version probe. This keeps both. The next commit unifies the two closing stops.
The closing stop now reuses the post-swap version probe. It stops a daemon only when its version differs from the installed min. It uses --force only with consent (--force-stop, or a yes to the pre-swap question). Otherwise it stops gracefully and leaves a daemon with live sessions running, with a note on how to stop it. An EXIT trap runs the same stop when the run dies after the first executable swap. The installer suite covers a session opened in a respawned daemon and a checksum failure after the first swap. Spec 07 R5.5 now describes the pre-swap and post-swap stops.

Round 1 of 10 on a /revise note, pushed as Resolved conflicts in: No Review threads the coder judged:
After an upgrade, install.sh stops a leftover daemon only when its version differs from the installed min. It uses --force only when the run has consent (--force-stop, MINIMAL_INSTALL_FORCE_STOP, or a yes to the pre-swap question). A session opened during the install survives, and the output tells the user to run 'min stop' or 'min stop --force'. A run that dies after the first executable swap still takes the closing stop through the EXIT trap. Spec 07 R5.5 now describes both stops. Notes from the agent: The base merge conflicted in scripts/install.sh. Main moved the stop helpers to a shared section and added a post-swap version probe that force-stopped a mismatched daemon. Commit 9284b52 is the plain resolution, with both blocks kept. On that commit one uninstall scenario (HU17) fails, because the PR's unconditional --force stop hits main's matching-daemon case. Commit 9df26b7 unifies the two blocks into stop_stale_daemon. That change alters main's behaviour for a reinstall over a stale daemon with no consent: it now stops gracefully, not with --force, so I changed the HU16 assertion to match. The closing stop never prompts. A rerun replaces nothing, so the pre-swap advice 'rerun with --force-stop' does not apply there. On a die before min is swapped, the old min and an old respawned daemon report the same version, so the trap stops nothing. The next upgrade's pre-swap stop handles that daemon. I reverted the H8 assertion to main's single graceful stop, because no daemon answers the probe in that scenario. Vale is not installed on this box, so I did not run 'just lint-prose' on the spec edit. I did not run 'just ci' because the change touches only shell scripts and the spec. |

arch-review: PASS · the full ruling
The design of record does not govern how the installer stops a local daemon, so this change is a PASS by absence. The post-swap stop is now graceful unless the run already has consent. This is safer than the earlier unconditional --force. Spec 07 R5.5 and its tests change together with the script. The PR body still says the closing stop always uses --force. Update the body so that it agrees with the diff.
Ruled at 9df26b7 against gominimal/arch@3dab1097cda1 by claude-opus-5-5.
When the post-swap stop's graceful `min stop` is refused for live sessions and the run holds no consent, the installer now asks on the terminal through confirm_force_stop, as the pre-swap stop does. A yes runs `min stop --force`. A no, or no terminal, leaves the daemon running and names `min stop --force`. A matching daemon is still never stopped. The installer suite adds the yes path, and spec 07 R5.5 describes the question.
Both `min stop --force` calls in the post-swap stop used to hide a failure after the "stopping a daemon still running from build ..." line. A non-zero exit now prints "the daemon on build <v> may still be running; run 'min stop --force'". The installer suite adds a case where the installed min's forced stop fails. A comment above the EXIT trap explains that confirm_force_stop can ask from the trap. Spec 07 R5.5 now says the exit handler runs the stop once any executable is replaced, fresh installs included, and describes the failed-stop message.

A yes to the pre-swap stop question covered only the sessions it listed, but the post-swap stop reused it to force-stop a respawned daemon. That ended sessions opened after the answer, which the user never saw. The pre-swap yes now records the session ids (min ls --raw). The post-swap stop forces on that yes only when every live session was in that list. Otherwise it stops gracefully and asks again, or, with no terminal, leaves the daemon running and names min stop --force.

Round 1 of 10 on a /revise note, pushed as No The upgrade no longer treats a yes to the pre-swap question as consent for sessions it did not list. When a session opens in a respawned daemon after that yes, the post-swap stop runs a graceful stop and asks again. With no terminal, it leaves the daemon running and names 'min stop --force'. Two new install_test.sh scenarios show this behaviour (hl10: a second yes, hl11: no terminal). Both fail against the previous install.sh. Notes from the agent: Mechanism: the pre-swap yes records the ids from 'min ls --raw'. Before stop_stale_daemon forces on that yes, it lists the sessions again. Any id that is not in the pre-swap list, or a listing that fails, sends it to the existing graceful path (graceful stop, then ask, or the no-terminal message). --force-stop and MINIMAL_INSTALL_FORCE_STOP still force without a question. The existing respawn scenario (hl7: yes, respawn with no sessions) still gets stop, stop --force, stop --force. The test stub 'min' now answers 'ls --raw' and can model a session id opened at respawn and a terminal that goes away after the first answer. Spec 07 R5.5 is unchanged, as the directive asks. dash is not installed on this box, so the suite ran under sh only. just clippy-strict was not run, because the change is shell-only. |

The post-swap stop calls confirm_force_stop with "post", so its no-terminal message no longer advises rerunning with --force-stop: a rerun replaces nothing and can never reach this stop. The pre-swap call keeps the rerun advice, which is valid there and on uninstall. The spec now states a pre-swap yes covers only the sessions it listed and that the no-terminal case points at min stop, not a rerun; HL8 pins the absence of the rerun advice. Routing-Key: inbox-route/I_kwDOSUhdos8AAAABTSyRPQ
The installer stopped the daemon once, before the first swap, but a client
attached during an upgrade autospawns a replacement daemon the moment that
stop ends — and the daemon it spawns serves the old version from the binaries
the run is about to replace. After the last swap the run therefore left a
running daemon built from the replaced files, so every later command hit the
client's version-mismatch guard until someone ran
min stopby hand. Theinstaller now stops once more, best-effort and
--force, after every swap isdone, so the daemon a run leaves — if any — is the one it just installed. The
pre-swap stop already ended or obtained consent for the live sessions, and a
mid-run respawn holds none, so the closing stop goes straight to
--force;ShutdownRequest.forcehas carried aserdedefault since it shipped, whichkeeps the new CLI's stop compatible with an older daemon. Spec R5.5's "at most
once per run" wording now describes the pre-swap stop only; a fresh install, a
no-op rerun and a data-only replacement never take the closing stop. The
installer suite gains a scenario that models the respawn — a stub client that
re-spawns the daemon from whatever is on disk whenever one stops — and pins the
exact three-stop sequence plus the daemon-body the run leaves behind; run
against the previous installer it fails on exactly the missing closing stop
and the stale daemon body, and passes with this change.
